Internet says ignore.

Put 700 miles on the wee golf over the last few days and it is a pretty nice thing. NJGleeds did say he thought it would suit me and he was right.

The interior is a bit manky ... Well very manky. Door cards are a bit worn and seats need a fully beko session.

Thing is I can get a new/used interior for about £80. It's whether I just swap them out or try to revive what I have got.

Other fleet uodates

Timing belt has arrived for Rover - hopefully can get that back runninfy

Mx5 has got rollbar, new hood, balljoints, bushes and dust covers being delivered/fitted

Peugeot - headlights ordered from eBay - bargains, handbrake light doesn't work and horn is needed for MOT. Then will go to trusted shiter for a bit.

Just a tiny Amuse-bouche of an update.

Fingers crossed tomorrow I will be doing more shitey things with a barge from a farm.

Golf has got the MIL back on. Looks like I will have to change the fuel temp sensor on it.

But first to the important bits

That's better.

Mx5 news

Hood for mx5 has been booked to be fitted next Friday. For £380 including fitting I think it is worth while.

Roll bar is on order after mx5parts had them cheaper than trlane direct. Should have that in a week or so.

Ball joints, dust covers, bushes and other odds and sods have been ordered to deal with MOT advisories.

205

Pair of NOS brand new headlights are winging themselves to me.

Horn from Mondeo to collect and fit

Also I have worked out I have screwed up the headlight relay which I will fix when sorting out the headlights.

Then need to fix handbrake / brake light switch for MOT.

Nice work on the replacement switch for the Golf, it's little things like that make all the difference IME.

RE MX5 hoods, I've replaced a few but have never been posh enough to pay for an brand spanker to be fitted, exciting times! Mk2's get broken for peanuts (Coz chassis rails/arches/sills) so it was usually easy to bag gud'un on a frame for less than £100. They're a straight swap and come with the much improved glass rear window, sometimes even mohair too!

I have been looking for hoods for a while but there are some silly prices being asked for them. You can buy a cheap one to fit but I found some instructions in AVOs paperwork which suggested 6-7 hours for fitting DIY.

Sod that for game of soldiers. For the price the hood frame will be removed, cleaned, greased, hood fitted then all put back on the car.

Guy wants the car for 3 hours and is only on Stockport so not too far away.

By the end of today I should have a running Rover! I am quite excited.

More bits and a snag

Gaskets ready to go.

Clean up head and then

Clean up inlet manifold (took about 30 mins to get old gasket off)

Test fit new gasket

Bugger. It is almost the same but slightly oddly sized.

Better check headgasket

Phew. Will worry about inlet later.

Time for NJGleeds to get the studs out of the old head. 04a238322472e81c718064ff38590049.jpg

The rest of the afternoon was a bit challenge

Last up we checked headgasket fitted.

8aaf17693f148e2da8762bc94936077c.jpg

Then njgleed swapped over the studs and dowels from old head to new head.

Then we got the head back on

1607a3819fac4a3e49e028c6ef01d80a.jpg

The headgasket was only changed 6k ago but looking at it, whoever did it didn't use any/enough antifreeze - you can see it in the head waterways.

d3eb058a7cda6de0cca54b9da2fab7cb.jpg

Inlet fannymould and exhaust fanny mould fitted then onto the timing. This led to head scratching as the photos in HBol showed things that werent on the engine, qutodata consulted and didn't help much. In the end locking the flywheel seems to have done it.

Belt fitted which was a tight squeeze

Result.

Although it wasnt. The water pump I fitted last year is the wrong one, I suspect it is for a t series not an m series engine. It has got 24 teeth on the pulley where as the old one has got 16 teeth.

At this point I was described as a walking eurocarparts - due to the number of things I have bought that don't fit! I couldn't really argue with that .

Neil also made me put the phone down to cartakeback - saying it wouldnt been too hard to fix.

Luckily I have learnt from yoda Leeds, and the old one was still in the boot. It spins fine so tomorrow it will be going back on.

So tomorrow is

Belt off

Pump off

Pump on

Belt on

Check timing

Drive belt on

Covers back on

Top bits of engine rebuilt

Water top up

Start the car

We also poked the rear sills and they will need patching for the MOT.

Once it is driving then it it will be a case of stick it in for a test to see what it will need.

Hopefully.

Positives are that it is pretty mint inside even after sitting for 9 months.

For the MOT I reckon it will need brakes sorting, sills patching and exhaust blow sorted.

Will be advisories for surface rust underneath and coil springs. Otherwise I think it should be fine.

Bad boy knicker dropping 205

Oh yes.

Today's the day that the rover will run for the first time in almost a year

Scary to think that this all started because the rubber bush had deteriorated on the dizzy drive. Talk about butterfly flapping wings and creating a hurricane. As Mr Leeds said - would have been quicker, and cheaper to fit megasquirt than all this faff.

Although the blocked gasket waterways would have probably presented problems in not too distant future

Battle commences

Hello m series

The HBol is deservedly named.

Apparently this

8f225deba91ff7ca48f16a893e68b662.jpg

To get the back plate off then just this

ea3981834742d7902e22563df0342a07.jpg

Lies lies lies. The back plate is in one piece so crank pulley has to come off. Life is so much harder when you trust the book.

Crank off, belt off l, back plate off, to get to this

9a128432c3ddd955036eff52f6d906d1.jpg

You can see the difference in the pumps

All swapped over

Back together and belt on

It's getting exciting. Still got a few hours work and need a drive belt delivering.

Jobs left

Radiator in

Hoses all connected

Battery on

Dizzy arm and cap fitted.

Dry turn over

Then hopefully first start.

There are some random vacuum hoses I am not sure where they go / are missing but I am sure* it will be fine.
