How much are bumper sprays these days?

About* £200, but this included re-fitting (which isn't hard) but they did re-rivet the rubber trim on the bottom, which I could have done, but at much more risk of causing damage to the paint...

re colours. Amazingly the base model was offered in 6 solid and 5 optional colours at launch - so you could have had your base in 11 different colours! The Black was extra cost, so the black GLX on the ebay tat thread that came up recently was I think a bit of a rarity.

If anyone out there spec'd a base in alberto green with Pumice trim, I'd have to buy it :-). You could also option ABS on the base. And the RS body kit with 15" alloys ?

O = Opal (grey)
A = Atlantis (blue)
P = Pumice (beige)

Growing up, our next door neighbours had an Alberto Green and Pumice Mondeo. I think it was a GLX? It was always infinitely cooler than our Zafira

I think mine would be a Citrine one.

Good call. But I'd be worried about it attracting the people who steal fast Ford's for a living!

Yup, and I had GLX pumice myself, til I scrapped it and replaced it with bits of rusty Invacar.
I think my dream spec (as I've no doubt mentioned before) is a 93 metallic paint GLX 1.8 pez with optional air conditioning...

I recall that one, this blue one is a much nicer spec imo. A shame to see it scrapped, but you can’t save them all!

My uncle had a L plate Nouveau Red 1.8 LX, my memory has it having a blue interior, is that likely? He then upgraded to a 1998 silver 1.8 Verona.

If it was me, I’d want a late Mark 1 estate in Tourmaline green, if that body/colour with a Pumice interior was available

Can anyone remember a TV show in the 90s where a team were driving overland through Russia? They used Ford Mavericks and Mondeo 4x4s IIRC they had to keep them running 24 hours a day to prevent them freezing and all the fluid lines were routed inside the cars. Not completely relevant to this thread but I just remembered it ?

More about the Mondeo's

Worth re-producing here for posterity I think

Four-Wheel-Drive Ford Mondeo - Press Release
The Ford Mondeo Si 4x4 five door hatchbacks taking part in the Overland Challenge are prototype versions of the four-wheel-drive models scheduled for European introduction in 1994. They have been built to the standard Ford specifications for vehicles sold in Sweden where winter temperatures and road conditions in the north of the country are comparable with those likely to be encountered in Russia.

The four-wheel-drive system of the Mondeo 4x4 is similar to that seen in the recently launched Escort 4x4 but does not incorporate a viscous couple between the front and rear axles.

In order to route the drive to the rear differential, a completely new transfer box has been designed for use in the four-wheel-drive Mondeo - distributing the torque at a ratio of 58 per cent/42 per cent to the front and rear wheels respectively. As in the Escort, torque distribution takes place in the planetary gearset, which has a dual carrier, to ensure the same direction of rotation for front and rear axles.

The rear axle layout incorporates the 'Quadralink' arrangement of front-wheel-drive Mondeo models but employs a new rear axle cross member. All Mondeo 4x4 versions are equipped with anti-lock brakes (ASB) and traction control (TCS). TCS is used in place of a viscous couple and controls the speed of each wheel by precise use of the car's braking system under certain driving conditions

In preparing the Mondeos for the Overland Challenge, modifications have been kept to a minimum. To cope with temperatures of minus 40 degrees Centigrade which could be faced in Siberia, fuel and brake lines have been routed inside the vehicles. In addition, ground clearance has been raised 30 millimeters front and rear and protective undershielding fitted to cope with the rutted roads of Siberia. The cars also have supplementary jacking points, an auxiliary 1Kw heater, two extra batteries and winter tyres. On-board microprocessors control advanced electronic systems for traction control, adaptive damping for the independent front and rear suspension, four-wheeldrive and anti-lock brakes.

All Mondeo models incorporate an integrated safety system with driver's side air bag fitted as standard, seatbelts equipped with both 'grabbers' and pre-tensioners, and 'anti-submarining' seat bases designed to retain their occupants in the even of an accident. In addition the 'safety cell' body structure which has been developed using Ford's Cray YMP super-computer in the US includes side door beams and special body design features to provide all-round crash protection for passengers.

The Mondeo is also the most environmentally efficient vehicle ever produced by Ford, and the cars taking part in the Overland Challenge will be fitted with the latest 2-litre, 16-valve Zetec engines equipped with closed-loop, three-way catalytic converters and electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation systems. In addition to exhaust gas control all Mondeos have a carbon canister to trap the fuels given off from the fuel tank that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.

The 4x4 ones were significantly different underneath. In fact you could tell one from inside, the boot floor was different and the passenger footwell was different. Unless you were towing they were fairly pointless though, in fact they weren’t that clever at that, the extra  weight on the 2.0 wouldn’t make for pulling tree stumps out.

Indeed, I wonder how many they actually sold to private punters? (The fleets wouldn't have been interested, I doubt). Very rare today of course.

I'm trying to think what its 4x4 hatch competitors would have been- there was a Cavalier Mk3 wasn't there...

BX gti 4x4, Peugeot 405 GR X4.

The Cavalier was intended more as a working car, the Mondeo more for the road holding which was very good on the Mondeo Mk1 anyway. Pretty pointless really which is why they didn’t sell many and canned it round about 95/96. Few left as they get bummed for the 4x4 bits on them, those that are left are either (badly in my opinion) modified or shagged out from endless trips pulling caravans. Or like most Mk1/2 rotten as old fruit.
