So did the cambelt get done on the GLX on the end?

 

No, and I'm afraid I've decided to scrap the car. I don't like giving up on any vehicle, but this one needs to go now.

Shame to scrap the GLX could it not be worth trying to offer it on here, Retro Rides, FB etc first?

 

Appreciate it easy for me to say that though just hate seeing anything like this scrapped.

 

There a Scrapyard I went to today in Derby called Albert Looms which has a 1.8LX MK1 hatch in White for breaking if that's of any use for parts. I only noticed it on the way out but seamed complete still and also saw a facelifted MK2 saloon in the same yard.

I think if I'm honest  - no-one quite loves it enough, even me really. I have offered it for sale here and on FB at around scrap value (+ value of parts).  My blue one has the cachet of being a base model, so gets a bit of extra love on here.

 

The Mondeo fanciers on Facebook don't want it because they are into Ghias, Si's and the larger engined models generally (still many with significant mods).

 

Among all the Facebook groups that I'm on, I think I'm virtually the only person pro-actively preserving a 1.6.

 

Several folk are quite interested in it on here, but don't really love it.

 

It was a mistake, I should have walked away when I heard that iffy water pump (I actually diagnosed it during the buying process - hooray, but then bought it anyway - hurooh!)

 

My personal circumstances have also been at bit shitty since July 17 - and my energy went into the Mazda, as Mrs Egg wanted an auto - and I'm very pleased with that outcome.

 

I'm well aware than in 10 years it will prove to be a mistake, just like when I sold my 76 MK2 escort in 2003 for buttons...

I'll admit the weedy engine puts me off. The 16v 1.6 seemed ok in my Escort but I would have liked more. I've since had a 1.3 Fiesta and 1.6 C4 so I'm pretty bored of weedy engines revving their tits off at 70 and returnng mid-30s MPG.

not great, the car has sat outside it's whole life before I had it.

Well worth ragging whatever you can get off it. They’re fairly simple things to take apart, stripping all the ancillaries off isn’t difficult and you’ve then got spare serviceable parts you can use as and when. Stuff like PAS pump, Alternator, fannymold, starter motor, all easy stuff to remove and store. The one I had I stripped it to pretty much a shell and wheeled it on to the beaver tail from the scrappies. Don’t bother dealing with car take back etc, deal direct with the breakers.

My regular Flickr trawl has found this. Looks like Hampshire Ambulance service were apparently running GLX Mondeo's in 1994, and next to it an R8. Scrapped in 2006.

 

I have no idea why an LX wasn't good enough!

Don't blame you under the circumstances. Will be nice for the Base to miss a bit of the winter weather, at least.

Some bits are surprisingly saleable. The bumpers definitely. Also if you can be arsed the PAS pipe that runs from the cooler to the rack is worth selling, I got £45 for mine. All the miscellaneous bits like PAS pump, starter and alternator are easy to take off.

Sorry to hear it's getting scrapped but I was one of the ones who couldn't take it on when you offered it on here a while ago. Just no space and the wrong time.

Both my Base and GLX had been owned from new by elderly male owners.

 

The difference between them was that I reckon the base had always been garaged, whereas I know the GLX had always been parked on a street. I think the Base had been dealer maintained for the first 13 years, and things had been kept just about ticking over since. 

 

Whereas the GLX had really had the absolute minimum of maintenance, probably for a good 10 years or so.

 

E.g. the coolant pipe that always rots out was new for example on the base but unchanged on the GLX

 

I think even if the GLX had been made to live on - and it was possible, otherwise I wouldn't have considered offering it on here -  it still needed a lot spending on it to maintain it over the next 2-3 years - and really, no-one is interested in low spec models. I noticed recently that one of the base models for sale this year on eBay hasn't been taxed since March, so may be given up on.

 

So while the GLX had lived in the central London micro-climate and is virtually rust free, it really wasn't a brilliant prospect all in all - unless you could do some work yourself.

 

Shame really. But a learning experience, and I can now focus on getting the blue one through to classic* status. I wouldn't by another one now.

Understand where you coming from egg you can't win them all. Some cars just fight you all the way. When my parents split up the 2 spare motors I had at the time weren't playing ball so they had to both go as lost the space / money to sort them with it.

 

Anything you can remove take it as it always the one thing you don't is the one part you need! Screws / clips etc are always handy to have too. I've got to know my Cavalier so well in the last 10 years that just by looking at my jar of screw & bolts. I can spot what came from where which has helped me out a few times.

 

You know owning a Mondeo like sierraman what the most common part failures can be so it always worth taking those off first and anything else second if time permits.

Seriously, a weight off my mind. And the Base is tucked up on SORN, and garaged for the first time since I had it in Feb 2016, ready for another Daily Express winter.

 

Though the above pics show the fine line between life and death for our old cars.

 

It started up off a booster pack, and kept her pride by driving on to the beavertail.

Almost one month through the SORN winter lay up for the Base. Just checked in on it today, and while I was there continued with my ongoing quest to change all external rubber parts by replacing the rear wiper grommet as suggested by Sierraman as one of many possible sources of a boot leak. 5 min job. Probably a bit of silicone would help too, but as I was at the lock-up I didn't have it to hand.

 

I can do that when it's back on the road on 1st March.

Afraid it is a DMB graphics mock up, the original was too far gone!

 

Cuff Miller had records of the car this is what they said by email back in 2016:

 

I have had a look at the service history that we have and I can tell you that it had a regular service with us from,

1995 to 2005. There was a cam belt fitted at 25662 miles on 26/11/1998.
 
After 2005 we had it in for MOT’s up until 2009 and then we did not see it again.

The Mondy isn't doing much at the mo, Mazda dealing with all frontline duties and Invacar taking up my spare time.

However, I noticed someone advertising a local glass blasting service and thought I'd give them a try with my dirty exhaust heat shield. This is actually my spare one ex-GLX. Quite expensive at £15, £10 would have been more like it, but a big improvement apart from the bits where the coating has worn off, and will go on the base if I ever get round to refreshing the cooling system...

When you whip the manifold heat shield off check for any cracking in the manifold, on the earlier cat up front ones the manifold tends to crack in the centre 2 cylinder outlets.

Bit bloody windy and cold, but 6 screws to swap this heat shield over was do-able.

A lovely car, I watched the hub nut road test of this yesterday then found it on here. It is a good companion for my L reg cavalier Colorado which despite the fancy name is a base spec model inside. It also has the distinction of never being a company car and having only three owners one of them (me) having owned it for 19 years. Like the mondeo it has a charm of it own

Is it just me or did the Cavalier Colorado have a pair of very austere looking front seats that look as if they came out of a mark 2 Astra? :huh:

I had a new old stock grille hanging about...

I primed it variously in my Kellogg's paint tray
