I did the essential prep, i.e. gave it a two bucket job and then remembered I needed to wax the tailgate where the paint is thinning

I sent it to my normal tester, with some OEM bits;

So an oil change and a good result:

Pair of ditchfinders on the front already wearing, maybe because I think the alignment is set toe-in to avoid the pulling to the left issue. I think. Was going to get new rear tyres anyway, so looks like it will be all four at some point.

Should take it through to its 28th birthday in March now. That's its 5th MOT on my watch.

A couple of K-reg's have passed by my eyeballs recently...

This 1.6 GLX, a bit like the one I had, was registered May 93, and hasn't had an MOT for a year, but should live on I believe.

And then there is this, March 93 registered 1.8 LX - looks fantastic - and has done similar mileage to mine. It's obv on a private plate, if @LightBulbFun has some spare credit, would like to know the original reg please!

@egg My local bodywork man  has put me in touch with somebody who hopefully  sort the head and then it needs the rear arches doing, the drivers side rear door is bubbling too

Head isn’t a bad job on those, labour intensive but not difficult. Surprises me the head has cracked I’ve never known a Zetec to crack a head. I’d just pick a head up from the breakers, not be expensive. Stick a new belt on and away you go. Be interesting to know why it’s overheated though, I’m going for either the lower rear coolant pipe rotted through or the thermostat housing O ring had slowly pissed all the fluid out.

  • 2 weeks later...

I can't remember if I've posted this before but I started a new job in May 93 and it came with a Mondeo 1.6LX.

Day 1 I was given a fuel card for K420UDX however the car was nowhere to be seen.  By the end of the day it became apparent that the car would not arrive and a hastily arranged hire car was sorted out (a cavalier 1.8LS).

Spin forward a few days and we are told the Mondeo has failed it's PDI and an alternative car is  to be arranged.

Two weeks later I had K439UDX and for the next 2 years I had mostly good service out of it.

Not a K reg, but was pleased to see this M reg Mondeo this week. It was at a local body shop, having a repair to the n/s front dr and rear arch.

Thought of @egg so had to come back on foot for a sneaky photo. Sorry it's poor, but I was being watched with suspecision by the garage next door!

Reg is M455 UEH and comes back as a 94 Diesel.

Thanks for that, nice to see a Diesel being worked on, given their relative rarity, and general shiteness!

I'll watch the video Dan posted later, looks like prime time viewing!

@holbeck - K439UDX last taxed 2003 - only a 10 year life....

Thanks Dan, really good watch that! It explains a lot of the Mondeo features really well. Some things I didn't know - because I don't have ABS/traction control on mine for example. Makes the car seem very advanced! Definitely lots of pre-production cars in the video, I reckon.

What I'd love to know is whether there are any Ford specialists around with a working FDS 2000 - I've never come across one. Would be massively useful for those of us with early 90's Fords.

edit - oh hello - this place in Southampton does explicitly say it does.

Mrs Yoss, who is also a postie, delivers to that garage. They have all sorts of old Fords in there. Lorraine takes the odd picture to show me when they have something really fancy in. Unfortunately old Mondeos don't come in to that category in her mind, it's usually mk1/2 Escorts and Cortinas she takes pictures of.

Anyway, I just asked her and she says they are friendly. Seems a long way to come but if you do (or anybody else here) let me know and you're welcome to pop in for tea and biscuits.

Here we go again, the job I've been putting off, replacing the broken cowling with the one bought from eBay and @greengartside. If the windscreen cracks again, it won't be good for the ole mental health, so taking my time. 'strip down' now, new parts to be added after lunch!
