'93 Mondy thread - K reg data geek

Just worked out how to do the 'engine on' code reading properly. I just needed to get the reader facing the broken (ha ha, lols) screen so I could see what it was doing while I was initiating the test from the driver's seat.

Final verdict = 111

No errors.

Good old Mondy.

Just had another look at the screen and the cowl retaining screw has actually snapped off from the cowl, so really I need a new cowl now, when I tightened it, I clearly put it under too much load for 27 year old Ford plastic.

Early 90's cars are just getting old.

It can be fixed with money of course

£45 (11 watchers)

And £18 for new clips (21 watchers)

Number of watchers suggests others in similar position, but also not wanting to splurge the cash....

£75 paid and booked in for 18th June. Last replaced 21/6/17 - so it lasted 3 years.

What I hate is how I fiddle around with pennies here and there to make all ends meet etc, and then potentially make an expensive cock-up like that.

Only other thing in my defence, is I always felt this screen had a slight warp in it after fitting - evidence for this is that the driver's wiper blade tends to leave a trail sometimes as though it doesn't sit fully flush and also, there was a bit of distortion when looking at the passenger side of the window from the driver's window. Sounds like being wise after the event, but it's all true ,your honour.

Anyway, what's done is done, and I'm off to cry like a girl at my misfortune. Well, just be a bit grumpy anyway...

I had to book with them the day before yesterday.  17th of June for me.  They must be hammered and there was nothing at a fitting centre, only mobile...

That will make it a rear windscreen and a front windscreen on mine this year.  Oh well.  It is gutting when it happens.

Probably the same fitter! I was heartened to hear they actually had one in stock.

Anyway, this torn rubber handle was unacceptable.

I got one from another Mondy fancier

Also, I decided as we never go on picnics, this National Trust blanket could do better UV protection on the back-seat rather than in the cupboard.

Those weirdly expensive travel sweets that come in a round tin, a dangly earth strap, FoMoCo branded mudflaps, a sunfaded National Trust sticker and an AA atlas from 1985 for a full house.

You've fixed it until it broke.

Indeed, sir. But I feel slightly better about it as I have now found there was a Ford Technical Service Bulletin on this very subject discussed here, and I quote

Quote

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.82/1998
Car and Light/Medium Commercial 09.07.1998
Section: 42
Model: Mondeo '93/'97
Markets: All
Subject: Windscreen cracking at the bottom edge

Service Instructions No 82/1998

When installing a new windscreen, it is possible for the front face of the locator blocks (also known as `piano spacers') to create a high pressure point which may result in the windscreen cracking, particularly when installing the cowl top outer grille assemblies. This can be resolved by removing the locator blocks
and sealing the holes with waterproof rivets (see Parts Required). The new windscreen should be positioned as shown and retained with adhesive tape (see Parts Required) whilst the adhesive cures.

I'm going to show the installer this info.

  • 2 weeks later...

Taking this apart again ahead of the screen replacement tomorrow. This is a shitter. Really is.  ALL four of the remaining plastic/metal retaining screws have snapped the plastic on the cowling - these screws should have come out with the cowling when you remove it. There were originally 5, but one has already broken. I guess it might be possible to add a plastic  washer to widen the screw retaining point so it actually still grabs on to the cowling/grille.

Though, below this to me is conclusive evidence that the screen was not installed correctly last time - remember the TSB above

Well look at this, it has cracked EXACTLY where the piano spacers/blocks are. I'm pissed off.

Those locators should have been removed. You can see I'm fed up in my reflection, lol.

6 of 1 and half a dozen of another - I am at fault, I over tightened the screws for sure - but, if they had installed the screen as per Ford advice - the problem would not have occurred.

I'd say six of one, half a dozen of the other and 2x3 of another as well. Surely Ford must take some of the blame for letting that get past the design stage. Admittedly precisely 0% of my fleet has bonded windscreens but I'm sure it wasn't entirely new technology in 1993 (though I may have to look in to that).

This is currently up for auction on ebay original press pack. Just the sort of junk I'd usually buy - but already £21!
