Or for the more retro feel...

Get the 130bhp diesel version - by far the most reliable, do easy 50-60mpg, pretty well specced, big load lugger, cheap+easy to get diagnostic tools (VAG-COM/VCDS) and cheap parts. If going long distances, cruise control is often just a stalk replacement and sometimes a reconfigure of the ECU (using VAG-COM). Occasionally an additional wire needs to be added.

The only trouble nowadays is finding one that hasn't moon miles. But then the fact they do it, shows how long lasting they generally are. As they are now getting "old fashioned", their price has dropped significantly.

Just a bit dull. The fuel savings though will at least gives you spare cash to buy something more fun+thirsty though. ;)

Yes, I'm sure if you go on Trig's Retro Road Tests , it's on there in full . Ther was also a similar test done by Clarkson using his dad's Doncaster businessmen friends as a panel. In Performance Car back when he was a real journalist .

Trouble is, about 90% of what's been suggested so far is too new and dull to have any "Autoshite credibility". I know I don't put 52 reg Passats and Ford C Max's in my spotted thread.

Why don't you tell us what you have in mind rather than us generating several pages of unsuitable suggestions

RENAULT 20

Perfect in all your requirements except safety, what with all the terrorism they attract.

Vauxhall Calibra has reasonable space in the back for kids, probably the roomiest of the coupes.  Also must be at the bottom of the depreciation curve so buy now while prices are low.

Maybe look at an early Volvo C70, avoiding the 2000-ish ones with electronic throttle control

Peugeot 605.... If you can find one for sale!

Prefer the 124 I think, thanks!

Ah, but you've not seen my w210, which just so happens to be for sale...

Genuinely have an open mind about it subject to ideas in first post. I appreciate I might be power posting on this thread. I do have a new short list from this thread.

It's alright don't worry about it, I'm just about to start a thread on recommending me a good towcar as I'm gonna get shot of the hippo

What you really want is a mk3 Mondeo TDCI, find one that has had the dmf and clutch done, great ac, very comfy, 50mpg and 2000 revs at 70mph, I wouldn't class them as shite though they are seriously good cars l.

get that 827 above bought!!

them coupes are brilliant, we had an 820 turbo which now, nearly 4 years after we sold it we still miss.

and there is oodles of space in the back, plus up front they have the finest and most comfortable seats that I have placed my behind on, EVA!!

Most Cavaliers/sierras etc will be shot at that age, either through rust or generally worn out. Parts won't be easy either, yes you'll be able to get an oil filter to your door within a day or so but something like a headlamp cluster could prove elusive.

You might chance upon something that's done hardly any miles sat in a garage somewhere but you often find with these finds they seem to give constant trouble in the form of seized calipers, bearings that go due to them being dried up, same for oil seals etc - due to lack of use.

By all means buy an old Sierra or something but use it as a hobby, using it every day will send you mad. My suggestion would be a Vectra C, one that has a bit of history with it hopefully.

Here is my historic 'chod' all the cars I should have kept (well, maybe not the Fiats which were rotten, natch)
