Im contemplating doing a cheap car street dumpage.

Spotted a car for sale in St Leondards - this is a 5 and a bit hour drive from me, or a 5 and a bit hour train journey with 4 changes and a ticket price of £210 second class.

Im thinking buy some shitbox cheap - day insurance - leave parked up in a side street with the keys in the ignition and then drive home in the new car as being marginally cheaper and possibly more pleasant than getting a train ticket.

Go on the ticket splitting websites...Preston to St Leonard’s comes in at £56

Remember to split your ticket at a station you are not changing at. That way if your first train is late, they have to honour your second train. If you split where you change and the second train leaves before you arrive at that station., you then can't use the advance ticket on a later train.

Only used it for Runcorn to Hemel Hempstead and splitting at Stafford saved £30. Used it at least 10 times.

Strangely the Friday afternoon return was cheaper without splitting and a 1st class advance was cheaper than 2nd class advance.

Leaving a car with it's keys in reminds me of a mate of mine back in the early 80's...

He had a frilly mk1 Escort (yes I know, benefit of hindsight etc but they were ten a penny rot boxes in those days) destined for the scrapyard. Instead he parked it in Hull's redlight district with the doors unlocked and keys in the ignition hoping some desperate punter would nick it. A fortnight later... it was still there with four flat (slashed) tyres. He had to pay for the scrapman to come and pick it up.

Incidentally this is the same Escort he drove through Hull with a used rubber johnny trapped in the door after it was discarded following some 'courting' of a young lady at Paull.

Remember the rusty 635 I mentioned the other day? This isn't it. Just caught a glimpse of a rusty wing so I stopped to peek over the fence. Is that a Sierra Cosworth spoiler?

Spares only, that one. There's that tell-tale rusty streak on the roof skin which is a sure sign that it's rotted from the inside.... New roof skins for sunroof cars (almost all of them had sunroofs) have long been unobtainable. Door mirrors also unobtainable, but they were also used for some models of Volvo 200.

While we're there did anyone get a picture of the eighties Oldsmobile (I think) coupe which was always parked outside the Indian takeaway? Quite a piece

Not this beastie? Currently looking a bit unloved in a gravel car park behind the owner's home

That's the one! Another I always meant to come back and photograph when I had more time but never did. This used to be in a garden a couple of minutes walk from the Olds but had disappeared the last time I checked. I did knock and enquire about it but the old boy who owned it was using it as a shed. (Insert your own punchline here..)

Which has just reminded me of this in Canvey, another place it's surprisingly easy to find good quality driveway ornaments. There's a round - headlamp Lada and a small late Seventies Datsun estate behind it but they're too hidden to get a snap of.

Nice find.  Never really explored Canvey but I can imagine there is some 80s that festering over there, mainly fords.

The most unusual things I saw mouldering on driveways round there were a Delorean and a Mk. 4 Zodiac limousine but annoyingly I've lost the photos taken at the time.

A few more from round that way :

I've had a look through your thread, we saw a few of the same cars but a surprising amount were different - I used to ride my bike around Leigh on my lunch breaks finding stuff. We knocked up on that Shovit when my mate had his one, but she wasn't selling.

Oh and I could have helped you with the plate on the Cortina too!

Have you Essex chaps seen the shovit in Ambleside Drive Southend, a green hatchback?   I haven't seen that green saloon one above before, nice find.

A few good finds in Leigh on Sea.  There was an old Bedford Domobile aging away behind some 6' foot gates just off Pall Mall.  Either just inside the top of Torquay Drive or Victoria Drive.  Also a MK1 Cavalier Coupe under some cat piss tarp in Madeira Ave.  It seems the silver SD1 VDP has now gone from Cheltenham Drive though, same owner for years and used to live up Chalkwell Pk Drive.

That Cortina is a new one on me I think. Saw this one earlier in the year but this was the best potato cam shot I could get at the time....

This reminds me exactly of a VW LT35 camper that has been left in exactly the same way as the Cortina, right in the middle. It looks to have been there for years.  I'll have to try and get a picture.

Technically not abandoned as it's on a SORN. The carpark it's on is a visitors carpark that is always rammed with cars, but there is a building with CCTV behind the car and the carpark is used by residents as parking is pretty bad an expensive if you don't have a driveway or communal parking, so I guess it's a residents car. I only noticed it a few weeks ago as I was passing by on foot as there was a light mark on the tarmac around the car that indicates its not in use.

Out of MOT since 2012 and on a SORN.

W-body Cutlass Supreme coupe on some shitty wheels. There are a few of these around in the UK, Autoshite has been graced by a beautiful light blue one somewhat recently.

The back half and rear windscreen remind me of the Mazda 929 coupe.

Wrap-around rear quarter/back windows on coupes and sedans were a design trend in the 80s that Saturn, Olds, Mercury, Ford and Mazda (plus probably a few others) followed for a little while. I personally like it a lot, the Cutlass Supreme is a good example for it.
