I have been chipping away at the MR2 over the past couple of weeks.

Quite a bit of stuff has gone including Dome collecting some stuff in the week.

 

Today I stripped the front down.

Also got the engine and gearbox out

The old seatbelts from the Toledo were perfect for getting it out.

Now I just* need to get tidied up and get stuff sold and the rest weighed in before the next car comes along in two weeks.

After the Octavia giving me a camshaft sensor fault I started to have a look at the belt and sensor.

Unfortunately without shifting a load of stuff out of the way I couldn't even get the top cambelt cover off so I gave up, went home and washed it for the first time. 

 

It actually came up quite well and it too at least two hours for the seagulls to find it.

Back on the MR2 the windscreen is good and I thought it might be of use to someone if I could get it out in one piece which I have never done before so I had a go.

A bit more tiding up and then the rest of the shell can go in the bin.

I want to get the pipes for the coolant off from underneath but I didn't want to be underneath.

Some attempted identification of where the oil leak is on the 205 happened but we basically just cleaned everything off and hope to find where from with fresh tracks. 

It is coming from the distributor end of the engine.

I had asked this in the Ask a Shiter thread.

 

The octavia is throwing up a code for a camshaft position sensor.

Having a look on Amazon (which I'm finding great for car parts at the moment) and there is an Intermotor one for £18, a no name for £12 and a Delphi one for £35.

 

Silly question, is it worth going for anything other than the Delphi one?

It was suggested that the timing was out and the car has been steadily getting worse at starting as well as a loss of power.

In the interest of not wanting to go anywhere near the cambelt as access* is tight I got an intermoto sensor off Amazon.

I have just fitted it and initial findings are success.

If it stays going as it should then I will be delighted.

 

To blot its copybook even more than it has the rear footwell on the drivers side is wet and starting to smell.

First look over the GSR

 

Both rear arches have surface rust most likely because of this.

So all the mud has now been cleared out from the arches.

 

Then I gave it a bit of a clean and put some stuff back where it should be.

While fucking about at the back I managed to do this. Is there a way of sticking it back on so it will work again?

Apart from breaking the heated rear window connection I swapped out the radio (priorities) and had a look at the knocking at the front. A quick inspection showed nothing obvious so I will put a time aside for a proper look.

 

I topped up the oil as it was getting low and then drove it home. 

I much prefer it to the Octavia but will see how many problems it gives me.

The Octavia yet again being a pain in the arse gave me these.

So I plugged in my code reader and it came up with nothing.

I had bought a Vagcom cable and disc off ebay for about 7p and had previously failed to get it going but today I decided it needed to happen.

Thankfully Google turned up loads of results to get the driver installed and I finally got it connected to the car.

The result was this

So front left abs sensor giving issue. I had a look and couldn't get a consistent reading with a multi meter but that could have been the deep socket making it awkward so new sensor on order as they are cheap.

 

While I was messing about I did its first oil change in my custody which went fine if a little* messy.

It's the kind of small on going niggles that piss many off with VAG. Only redeeming thing is that the parts are common between loads of models, so easy and cheap to get.

I think the wife's golf has the same abs sensor problem. Abs and anti skid lights are on.

 

I had to put a new one in the daughter's polo as well.

 

Now I have the vagcom working I'm happy to plug it in to find out what the abs issue is if you don't already know.

It's the kind of small on going niggles that piss many off with VAG. Only redeeming thing is that the parts are common between loads of models, so easy and cheap to get.

 

The many niggles are present the main one being the passenger door giving two fingers to the central locking whenever it feels like it.

While waiting for the cheap abs sensor to arrive for the Octavia I had a look over the GSR again.

 

 

These were a little cloudy, this is the good side.

They will go on when they arrive.

Of course everything came off easily*

Yes another disc retaining screw needed drilled and tapped.
