Tickman's stuff. VAG shite

Tickman

Recommended Posts

I went to my local scrapyard and was told that any Alfas they get in they do not keep as there is no money in it for them.

Don't waste your time, best call specialist who break as part of the business and know what fits what

Give Autolusso a call, they post globally.  I know the fellas that run it and don't go anywhere else these days

Bollocks.

Pack up and go home.

Then Drum said:

Tickman, I got Rod Ferrier's place in Forfar (Rod retired now) to rebuild a starter motor, but it was dear.

Have a look here for alternator wiring info http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/altplug.htm

So with new hope desperation I looked again at the page and it has all the wiring types so went to the local auto electricians and asked about getting a suitable plug and wiring it for a new alternator to which they looked at me like I was stupid and basically told me to go away.

I then went on ebay and purchased a plug for a few pounds and waited for a nice dry day to arrive, today arrived nice and dry so I set about not killing the Toledo.

After messing around for a while I had this:

So I took it for a run and then had another quick check and nothing appeared to be wrong.

While the battery was out and on charge I cleaned up the slightly rusty stuff under it then treated and painted it.

Chuck's Clio has been marking its spot over the last week so I had a look at it today. First I needed to get it up on ramps but the modern low* sporty* style of the Clio meant that I would have had to cut most of the bumper off to make that happen so I got the saw and some screws and made something useful:

Once access was achieved I found a bit of the sump had weakened enough to give a constant weep about 10 seconds after wiping it, some carefully* applied chemical metal has hopefully plugged that hole. Some of this:

Went here:

After that had set I painted the sump so fingers crossed my temporary fix is permanent.

After this I took Sonic to pick up a parcel, this resulted in a massive palaver, There is obviously some shit in the carb so I will have  to sort that to get it running properly again and the clutch bite was very close to the floor and after investigation I found out why:

Next on the agenda was the Alfa and its boost leak, I was going to apply some tape around the bits of pipe that are split then I noticed this bit:

post-17457-0-67662500-1509986580_thumb.jpg

There appears to be a tab broken off the air filter housing and it is not clamped down properly so is not going to hold boost depending on which way the air is going at this point.

I decided to not bother anymore and shut the bonnet after checking there was enough oil in for engine happiness, which there was.

Liking the little ramps. Need to make some for myself

Needs must

Agreed on the ramps, great idea for my low Astra!

Oh, did I say trade marked? No, oh well.

I suggest spending slightly longer making them than I did.

I would never have lavished such attention on the alfa;)

Re the Clio - a new sump is about £30 and it's just loads of 10mm bolts to fit. No need to move anything else

You actually did 97.5% more to the Alfa than I have, today I just looked at it and then gave up.

The last sump I changed didn't end as well as I had hoped so chemical metal might* just have to do!

Alf has added another 1000 miles to its total and it is still going.

post-17457-0-84907800-1510328565_thumb.jpg

It decided it needed some attention by making the handbrake need all of the travel and a bit more, a quick google said it could be sorted from within the car so one 13mm ratchet spanner and about 5 minutes later it was sorted.

Nothing else has been looked at this week and probably will be like that next week too.

Air filter housing is before the turbo, the places it could possibly be leaking boost from are turbo to intercooler hose, intercooler to inlet, or the intercooler itself.

Sadly 2.5 of these 3 things are buried deep.

You can inspect the bottom hose from underneath with the undertray off, the intercooler is probably a bumper off job but you can probably visually inspect it top and bottom.

Or not. Even typing that was quite hard work.

Good information, thanks. I might go for the or not option but if I do check at least I will know where to start.

After the required amount of time away from it I decided Yesterday was the day to fix* the relevant issues.

First off I added fluid to the clutch reservoir and ticked that off the list, I am going to see if the new fluid decides to leave before inevitably replacing everything.

Secondly I added a clear fuel filter up front to catch what I believed was dirt getting to the carb, the fuel hose I put it in was a little* past its best and it seemed to have sorted it.

Today I was out in it again and it cut out again and the fuel filter was quite empty, after some messing around I got it going again but I appear to have intermittent amounts of fuel being pulled through. First port of call shall be replacing all the rubber stuff but it was too cold and I couldn't get motivated enough to lie on the cold wet floor.

Alfa back outside the house after its one day rest!

Everyone ok, it had a meeting with a dry stone wall when it decided the road was not the only place it could drive.

Certain Shitter help has it parked up in Cupar and the aim is to get it back here for assessment of what is needed and if it is too much.

Driver inexperience might have had a role to play in it but I haven't really had a chance to get all the information from her yet.

I reckon some hammering and new plastics will see it back on the road. Tough wee car, it was quite a substantial wall.

I wonder if it was a diesel spill, the road was a bit slippery to stand on, and my boots still felt a bit slippy when I got back in my car.

Richard you are a star, thank you for just doing.

We will be over to raise your property values by removal as we can today. Hoping to just drive it back with a bit of luck.

First things first get the tow vehicle prepped for the job and collect the relevant items needed, trolley jack, straight bar for towing and a willing* volunteer. The Alfa is a perfect tow vehicle with the diesel torque to help along.

Go to Cupar and get the bloody thing of Richard's drive. Thank you again!

Pop round the corner and have a look at the scene:

That is quite a substantial wall!

Change the front right wheel as it has quite a chunk of it missing from the mishap.

Hook up the tow car:

What is that doing instead of the Alfa? Well it would have been the Alfa if it had a towing eye to fit in the bloody hole!

Drag it back piloted by the Mrs who has never been towed before and has also never been in the drivers seat of this once fine motor vehicle. Dundee achieved and parked up.  a quick look:

It's a bit fucked. Will have to see what the insurance say because of the wall so we shall go from there. It still seems to drive fine and also seems to hold its fluids so some hammer time and a wing, bumper headlight and bonnet might sort it but also it might not.

We shall see next week.
