New MOT History site now live.

I doubt that I shall ever buy a second hand car again. Just about every car I look at on ebay now, I end up checking the Mot history, usually to find that it has failed the MOT, then passed but still with a long list of advisories. Maybe that's because I only look at shit cars though. It's even stranger that some, where the ad quotes it as having an MOT, won't come up at all, saying no details available. (Like that Merc in the attic from the ebay tat thread)

It's not a bad thing a few advisories, unless they seem to make a cameo appearance every year.

I'd be incredibly wary of stuff showing subframe corrosion, oil leaks, recent fails for corrosion then a subsequent pass. Usually some birdshit welding followed by a load of tiger seal and a coat of under seal.

My old BMW 540i is recorded as having

Nearside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)
Offside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)
Offside Rear Tyre has ply or cords exposed (4.1.D.1b)

and all can say is it didn't. I owned the car at the time of all recorded tests and i've never had a car fail on a tyre, let alone 2, one of which was down to the wire. Are there many other errors like this recorded?

My stepdads last red Zafira - HN60YGW had an advisory on its first MOT for the numberplates being a bit shit

  • Test date10 February 2014
  • Expiry date16 February 2015
  • Test ResultPass
  • Odometer reading79,001 miles
  • MOT test number4196 5154 4038
  • Advisory notice item(s)
Front registration plate deteriorated but not likely to be misread (6.3.1d)
Rear registration plate deteriorated but not likely to be misread (6.3.1d)

That's about right, as I peeled the reflective films off both by its second year as they were peeling off! Then just polished the plastic underneath every time I washed it so it wasnt too blatent...

So today I tested a car which had a screw in the tyre.

On the old mot system there were 'non component related advisisories" one of which was "nail in tyre"

New system doesn't have this but has a text box to type an advisory in to.

I typed in "screw in offside rear tyre"

It came up with an error code along the lines of "A profanity has been detected"

So I can't say "screw", that's the end of the road for advisories such as "shit wheels"

You obviously aren't being specific enough. If you'd said "Philips 1 1/2" No 6 in offside read tyre" you would have been OK.

How you get round severely corroded flange, I can't help you.

This car despite a few minor dents and rust is in good condition.

Reads like: "Despite collapsing on stage from a massive heart attack, and immediately dying on the spot, Tommy Cooper was in good condition."

The Weewah Deewahs Pandah, here's the MOT fails from this September....Brake pipes are a serious worry tbh to say he was allegedly fannying about underneath, and these would have been spotted, and do question the ability of him as a spanner wielding monkey.

  • Reason(s) for failure
centre rear Brake hose bulging under pressure (3.6.B.3)
nearside rear Brake pipe inadequately supported (3.6.B.1)
centre front Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid (8.2.3)
offside rear Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)
nearside Front wheel bearing rough when rotated (2.5.A.2)

Front Subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.A.3)

I was expecting worse considering how long he's been trying to shift it

Just looked up my mum's 70-something friend's 2002 C3 out of interest, it's basically only used for trips to church and the supermarket, and is only on 50k but it's in a terrible state - well it is a C3, they fall apart for fun. Apparently it ran round for 2-3 years with no rear bump stops
