Lacquer Peel
It was an illegal grey import with the ID of an older model to circumvent US import restrictions, and they are obviously making an example. Their rules are daft but they are just doing their job.
gordonbennet
Would have been far better if the haircut had simply said its making an example punishment for trying to fiddle the system, and not started down the old safer for our roads bollocks....especially when the vehicle would have been perfectly fine being out and about had it genuinely been 25 years old, kinell a 25 year old LR is bad enough to drive when you're a bloody died in the wool Brit LR fanboy. barmatt
I used to be very active on one of the larger Land Rover forums (LZ) and in about 2011/12 we were approached by the police to help them with the problem of theft and ringing of land rovers, as they didn't have the knowledge of what was a series, defender etc and they gave us the number and email of a dedicated car crime officer to report anything we found. On one of my ebay evenings I noticed a 1985 and a 1986 110 for sale as scrap as a job lot as they were rotten as feck, I didn't think anything more of it until a week or so later I saw the same landies back on ebay for sale without their identities. So I had a little look at the buyer and it turned out to be a Land Rover "specialist" in the home counties. When I looked on their website, the id's of the two 110's were now on brand new lhd pumas ready for export to the states at ridiculous prices, circa £60-70k. This company were that greedy that once they had stripped the id's they wouldn't just "lose" the scrap landies, they wanted to get a few quid back off them by trying to sell them on ebay were they had just bought them a week or two previous and even more ridiculously, they didn't even have a fake id for ebay, they used their company id. Well, the long and short of it, i did report it to the rozzers and said company got busted for that and many other ringers they had in stock and they were prosecuted for it. The company eventually went bust earlier this year. cros and CHRIS1980

I think the ones that VW can get away with buying back ($35k for the car versus 15million in compo after the lawsuit) will be quietly crushed in Nevada. mercrocker

The company eventually went bust earlier this year.I had to go and do an arse licking article on said firm and saw the above with my own eyes - the rotters were on one side of the yard and the "rebuilds" on the other. A typical US build was a brand new 110 delivered from LR and rebuilt by lifting the body off, stripping out the running gear, galvanising the chassis and putting it all back together with a 1980s ID. The boss didn't give a fuck and when asked just said it didn't matter as they didn't go on UK roads...!! I was also proudly shown what I am certain was a genuine 50th anniversary V8 90 painted silver, on a galv chassis with a 1959 log book. Albert Ross
There is only ONE manufacturer of Series 2 and 3 chassis currently. That is, officially. Suppliers buy from them. They also make S1 chassis, but to order only, and on a piece by piece basis.

Lankytim
Can't cars keep their ID if parts are replaced individually, rather than all in one go (as in a ringer) So you could replace the chassis one year, bulkhead the next e.t.c and eventually end up with a "new" LR but on an old ID? Did I dream that?
D Spares & Tyres
Because trying to dip the chassis while still attached to the body makes an awful mess ☺ Richard
barmatt
Why did they have to strip them down and galvanise the chassis? To hide the original vin and to hide the fact that it was a brand new chassis. That's why the Yanks won't let anything in that has been galvanised, they are seriously strict on their import rules now. Because trying to dip the chassis while still attached to the body makes an awful mess ☺ Nearly spat tea all over my keyboard.
Junkman
I don't care anymore how other people get away with what they get away with.Fact is that whenever I do as much as put tyres with the wrong speed rating on my cars, I get pulled over and enjoy* the entire treatment.Heck, my cars don't even pass something as utterly Punch and Judy show as the British MoT, because the distance between the 1 and the V on the fucking numberplate is 1/16th of an inch too big. Or too small. Or some fucking horseshit that interests me as much as a pocket calculator exploding in Japan. It's always been that way. Hence I try to keep my cars legal. Which is impossible. So I pay. And pay. And pay. All they want is my money anyway, so nothing personal. michael1703

barmatt
Are you prepared to name this now-defunct company? I'd rather not as the chap is still trading under a different name, thankfully not selling green ovals but I will say it was a land rover company in one of the home counties beginning with B and it wasn't Buckinghamshire
CHRIS1980
VOSA tried to take away my old series 2a years ago as it had series 3 wings. It was a 1970 model so had the series 3 wings but he was adamant that I was driving a ringer. It's one one of the last 2a's so had the 3 front. But would he believe it? No way! I made such a noise,he was clearly loving it. Accused me of tax evasion etc. until a colleague of his pointed out his mistake. Fortunately for me someone more knowledgeable was holding this muppets hand. I know they have a job to do but they really need to get their info right.
