Converted to take a lengthened Hunter chassis and powered by the 1500cc engine from the Avenger, the Peykan Scimitar was expected to be hugely popular with dignitaries and taxi drivers in Tehran who were looking forward to a more spacious, modern replacement for the Hunter. However within days of the launch, Reliant launched a huge legal battle over the name which ultimately prevented sales of the new car in Iran and bankrupted Reliant. Reliant won the case but it was a hollow victory. The one pre production prototype that survived was awarded to Reliant and immediately purchased by Princess Anne who still uses it to take clippings and general rubbish from her flat in Balham to Wandsworth tip. Well known problem with pre-airbag Vauxhalls is that most models can be started by removing any number of dashboard components and re-installing them upside down, including the steering wheel. This is how you can tell a Vauxhall has been stolen on eBay. As the new compact Focus-class Jaguar XS is well under development, the SUV counterpart S-pack cannot be far away.
