The Honda needs a service, while its not yet shite being a 56 plate, It still needs some fresh oil etc every now and then. It's just clicked over 151k and its always been serviced at a garage, even the last twice I've had it serviced.

Cost wise it will be a no brainier, at Honda it will be approx £250+ independent will be about £180, DIY I'm unsure, this however brings me onto my next question Genuine parts or pattern parts? Genuine Parts will no doubt be OMGMEGAEXPENSIVE.

Onions welcome, and opinions.

Good quality parts for DIY,  eg Mann and Hummell or similar respected filters and some decent quality oil and branded friction materials etc, keep receipts with the service history, if you're going to private sell it might be an idea to keep your own hand written diary of the car from this moment on,           eg such and such a date 165467 miles, engine oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, pads and discs replaced, caliper pistons and sliders lubed brake fluid changed gearbox oil changed..with receipts to back these claims up that's a better SH than an overpriced stamp in the book.

The likes of us silly buggers judge the seller as much as the car if we're buying privately, so as a supermarket who thought they could take over the world once said, every little helps.

I find that I normally just buy the oil on special offer from time to time and then buy the air/oil/pollen filters (maybe a set of plugs If I think it's time or a fuel filter) from carparts4less and a mini service then only costs around £30/40 all in..

Get yourself a Pela pump and that way you can do a mini service from the top without taking off the under tray..

My cars get an oil change a lot more frequently since getting a trusty Pela then get rid of the old oil by painting every shed and fence in the area with it.. as it works far better than any of that crappy water based wood preserver as long as you don't set it alight ..

I just staple the receipt for the parts in the service book and write the mileage in etc myself

My local friendly garage gets the parts for both of our cars from Honda, but he must get a good discount. He appears to get the bits for around half the price they seem to be when I enquire. He also never bats an eyelid servicing the Prelude so bits seem available from the dealer. Apart from a power steering cooler for the Prelude. That was unavailable apparently. Currently not leaking but only a matter of time. As he reckons it isn't really needed in our sunny* climate and can be bypassed when it starts to leak am not too worried.

Would recommend using genuine parts for Hondas if similarly available at a decent price.

Dealer servicing is literally just pissing money down the drain unless your car is less than 4 years old or so and you want to keep FSH.

£200+ for a glorified oil change and for some 17 year old technician to spend 40 minutes ticking boxes on his clipboard rather than actually doing much to the car itself. Oh except they dont use clipboards any more its all fucking tablets and the like....guess where the money for those came from.

I do all my own servicing on all the cars I've had regardless of how new. I get my filters from the dealers, even on the VW it's not much more. Oils I shop around for and have a good source on amazon when it comes to the special oil my Bora needs. I get the VW Platinum oil for less than the cheapest from halfrauds. Even with the postage from Poland.

Basically the same for me. I do try to use OEM parts for the keepers where possible, I do check the cost relative to a good quality pattern equivilent - it's surprising sometimes that an OEM part is available for a similar money. Shop around, use the interwebnet etc., even motor factors can be talked into doing discounts.

Knowing what I know of main stealers antics - wouldn't touch with the proverbial 10 foot pole.

That's a new one on me.  I've got a couple or three cans of old oil and lots (and lots) of fence.  It will it have a similar effect to old-skool creosote I suppose.  Any reason to not use it in areas where kids are playing?

^ Depends on whether they're playing 'lick the fence' or not, as it's potentially carcinogenic.  Can also cause dermatitis, but you'd probably have to do a fair amount of fence-stroking and the splinters would get you first.

Therefore, also depends on which kids are playing there. [\grumpyoldgit]

Honda Servicing isnt extortionate

http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/owners/servicing-and-repairs/servicing/

Oil filter is about £12 from Honda, £5 for a Mann from Euro

Coxs Honda do service packs with OEM gear if you want it, or Holdcroft Honda in Stoke are usually pretty good on prices, avoid local Honda Dealers as they are always more expensive than these two.

Which Honda is it?

I've ordered all the bits of tinterweb, priced it up from Honda and it was coming in at £130 without Oil!

After a fiver discount I've had a Oil, Fuel, 2x Pollen & Air filter for £51.52. from CarParts4Less

Eerrr..aren't they Euro Car Farce in disguise?

I've never had any problems using ECP or carparts4less. I might have just been lucky. I always get a discount code for ecp online first or if you sign up for their newsletter they are always sending out offers. Never pay full price especially on parts that cost more than a few quid. They have also gave me a discount over the phone before when I bought something that was a bit pricey, a vacuum pump I think.

I would service my accord, using parts I get from erm, a local motor factors. Culmac or P&G.  I ring them, ask them the price, ask them what the real price seeing as how I'm looking at the internet, and can get the bits for less, then order them off the internet, because I'm not a fucking charity. Compete or go out of business is my moto.

I then buy the oil at Costco. 0W40 fully synthetic and it takes 5.5 litres. Convenient that in-between services it uses about 2 litres, so I always seem to have a litre in the garage. (Apart from last time, when I bloody didn't Doh)

If you wait twenty seconds on average, there'll be an ECP or GSF discount code, they're getting desperate and the last one was 35% off.

A lot of garages just use a Pela pump anyway, so factor one of those in (or if anyone passes Leicester regularly you're welcome to borrow mine) at £40 and you're still less than a dealer service.

The only thing I don't like doing myself is brake fluid. I've never done it, but I don't like the idea of it. Hence my daily is running on three year old fluid....

I use Trade Parts Specialists for VAG stuff, they are wholly owned by Volkswagen and only sell genuine stuff. £26 gets me a PD filter and 5L of Platinum 5-40w fully synth, the oil was down to £56.99 for 20L in May.

Talking of servicing lads, Millers Trident 5W40 full synthetic is on ebay at the moment in 25 litre drums @ £80 less a penny with free delivery, thats seriously cheap for very good oil.

I'd get some meself but managed to bag 20litres of Morris's equivalent a few weeks ago for a song, in danger of being unable to get in me garage at all at this rate.

Coxmotorparts seems pretty good tbh, £150 inc oil is not bad.

the web sites are very much similar, same process, logos etc so yes prob are the same company.

It's been 15k since it was last serviced and at least 45k since the fuel filter & pollen filter were done. And I plan on doing oil and filter every 6-8k after this.

Pela pump = work of the devil for oil changes..

If you're near Worcestershire one of the days I'll do it/show you how to change brake fluid and still have brakes... :-D

I've run through the brakes on my herald and they passed an MOT, however I've never done it on a daily driver that i shove the kids in, am I being a pussy?

And yes Worcester is only like 30 miles or so..
