Sent from my GT-I9505 using TapatalkI didn't really have any choice, the brakes were working when I left but were starting to bind as the journey went on.I stopped about halfway there to get money and when I got into the car the pedal went straight to the floor. My AA cover would have unlikely covered it as it had no Mot.A-framing it was out of the question because it's an automatic so the only option was to drive it.Driving slowly and using the handbrake worked well enough. mat_the_cat
Nice work. I'm interested to know why you normally choose 1.2mm wire to weld panels. I weld everything from 0.8mm sheet up to 3mm plate with 0.6mm wire without a problem but as I'm self taught with a MIG I'm wondering is there a technical reason that the bigger wire could be better? The 1.2mm is more resistant to kinking up inside the welder when you get a jam, but I certainly find the smaller diameter stuff easier to weld cr bodywork without chasing holes everywhere! Sent from my F5321 using Tapatalk I was going to question your logic of driving to an MOT with no brakes (I mean, it's kind of obvious what would happen at the MOT test if you knew they weren't working) but that explains it. I've experienced something along those lines before. Applecross pass in my old Audi A4 quattro, the left rear caliper started binding. I could only drive it for so long before the brakes were almost non-existent, then had to let it cool down for a while. That was... eye-opening. Sourcing another rear caliper for it was a PITA too. rantingYoof
I've not experienced pedal to the floor levels of failure yet. The Omega I took to Llandow track in Wales started getting spongy brakes after several demanding stops (it was a 1.8 ton car). That was pretty hairy. DodgyBastard
The logic in still driving to the test and knowing it was going to fail was that I would at least have a list to work through and a deadline to meet for the retest. It would have been too easy to turn back, put it to the side and wait until I felt like doing anything with it again. BavarianRetro
I'm assuming your choice of 1.2 wire is more due to the plentiful availability of cheap free wire and tips rather than any technical benefits? Zelandeth
Quite the collection and story you've got here, been fun reading through it. Never thought I'd see someone else unearth one of the Crypton diagnostic stations...Have one of those stuffed in the corner of the garage...even though I'm somewhat jealous that you've got the CO measurement kit on yours...Mine lacks that. Keep hoping I'll find one somewhere that I can rob that upgrade out of! Has proven handy for properly setting up the Skoda's ignition system though. Zelandeth
Mine was pretty dead when I got it (it had been out in the weather for years), but I got it going after a while - then again restoring electronic tech from that era is one of my other hobbies which is part of the reason I grabbed the thing in the first place really. Note that a lot of the functions need the coil clip connected up to function as it uses the waveform detected there as the timing reference for pretty much *everything* - have never seen one in person with the CO function but wouldn't be surprised if it was true for that too. DodgyBastard
Good news I hope, the bargain 123 barge should be back with 12 months mot at the end of the week, the ball joint and brake lines have been done and my tame mechanic is just waiting on a replacement brake caliper coming before getting it in for its retest.I had considered doing the brakes and ball joint myself but after looking at how much of a ball ache it would be I decided to farm it out to someone who knows what he's doing.I think the car will owe me about £750 when it comes back which is still a good deal for a w123 with a year's ticket... DodgyBastard
I've chucked this on gumtree and car and classic at a much inflated price. Now that it's passed its mot I can't decide whether to keep it and spend some more money on it improving it or whether to sell it and buy something else. I'm hoping I can make enough to buy a Peugeot 505. DodgyBastard
Mrs Foad had another go at filling and painting this. DSC_0610 by srblythe, on Flickr I think I'm going to keep it. DSC_0614 by srblythe, on Flickr In other news, I took the 305 on a long drive up to see Kinkersaab's Jeep in Aberdeenshire. DSC_0494 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0492 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0473 by srblythe, on Flickr The 305 handled it with ease but after driving up the bumpy farm track the rear axle started to creak... It's nowhere near as bad as the old axle but it's still mildly annoying. I suppose I should have spent the money getting it refurbished instead of chucking a used one on from a 20 year old C15... Anyway, on with the Jeep. I need to go back and collect it shortly, probably at the end of the week. Around the corner from the Jeep was a remarkably solid looking W124 230E DSC_0475 by srblythe, on Flickr I'm quite tempted to buy that as well but would really need to sell something before taking on another project but it would be great to have a collection of £300 Mercs. I also got to sit in and start this cool old Citroen GSA DSC_0488 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0487 by srblythe, on Flickr The dash reminded me of the mk1 BX I had briefly and the door cards were quite similar to my 305 estate. DSC_0406 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0401 by srblythe, on Flickr I haven't actually driven it yet, Richard has borrowed/hired it but I'm excited to have a go in it.
