Dave's shonkers - bye bye S3 (sadface.jpg)

Been a bit quiet on this as had a weekend away, a uni assignment and was sorting the old Audi for sale.

Did put some chemical metal on the suspect valve thing and it seems to be holding up fine.

Old one is ready to go so now had an hour on a few jobs this morning.

Job #1 - injectors. Deffo leaking.

IMG_20230228_083214.thumb.jpg.12391da09de351e5fb2ff2af918f133a.jpg

Pulled, cleaned, broke one taking the O-rings off. Noice.

IMG_20230228_101323.thumb.jpg.310b627380e165ea6d6be0a306080b8c.jpg

Rocker cover gasket was also leaking. The general scene (featuring free reminder to pull finger out and do cambelt):

IMG_20230228_084446.thumb.jpg.875586458445cebb395a01820fd5c0ec.jpg

Words can't really describe how crispy and useless the gasket was. For extra bodge points, an attempt had been made to add sealant, and all the nuts holding it down were only on just under finger tight.

How anyone with the ability to remove the rocker cover decided to apply wob instead of spending £12 on a new gasket, who knows.

IMG_20230228_090831.thumb.jpg.b6b49b4841873a52bfd73de58410f41b.jpg

Carefully scraped all the old gasket/crust/sealant off.
Pleased to see that it's all pretty clean in there with no real signs of the oil sludge they allegedly all suffer from.

IMG_20230228_093417.thumb.jpg.1c93bd4d331bd70dc02854c0aae3059a.jpg

Had to stop there to do some actual work but will pop out at lunch as need to get some hose to replace a super brittle bit of breather hose that broke.

Fairly satisfying to do a proper job on stuff like this but also mind-boggling that people bother bodging it with sealant etc when it's 97% as much effort as doing it right.

Done for now.

IMG_20230228_134506.thumb.jpg.e0dfa44086e127c3dad5e042a856b6c1.jpg

Had to replace a few clips and a length of breather hose that just shattered, dunno if it was once rubber or originally plastic but it's now dead.

Small dab of sealant in the corners per the manual with the excess wiped off. 10Nm on the nuts with the torque wrench usually reserved for push irons.

A nice man on a FB group found me a Bosch pn for just the plastic injector washer I broke but according to my tame motor factor nobody stocks them in the UK so have ordered a s/h injector for £14.

Positives:
Fitted new 4th injector with new seals and baskets ✔
Neither injectors or rocker gasket seem to be leaking ✔
Ordered cambelt & WP kit ✔
Flashed stage 1 map found on Nefmoto ✔

Negatives:
Oil pressure warning light about 200m from the house the first time I tried to drive it anywhere

Honestly I was so careful about trying to keep all the shite out of the engine when I did the rocker cover but I guess black wob on black oil is pretty hard to spot.
I can only assume the pickup was already pretty blocked and I added enough to push it over the edge?

The engine didn't make any bad noises and I turned around and brought it straight home so I'm hoping all will be fine with a new or cleaned pickup.
In a way I guess it's not a bad thing to be forced into looking at it as it should be done really as a preventative job on any 1.8t.

So car stuck on the drive till weather/parts/motivation align, decided to have a look at why the roof no work.

The fault code was for open circuit on the V223 which is the front hood locking motor thingy.

Step 1: remove some trim and apply multimeter direct to motor. Circuit is very much closed so that's one thing ruled out.

Step 2: find roof module and test from the connector. Circuit tests fine from there. Slight sigh of relief as I reckon the worst outcome would be a broken wire buried somewhere deep in the hood.

Open roof module, finds a bit of circuit that is open.

Slightly concerned that there could be an issue somewhere else that caused this to stand in as a fuse, but a SH module to swap in is only £20 so worth a go anyway.

I did find when I was in there that one end of the mechanism wasn't bolted in place properly so I guess maybe it was loose and not aligned and this caused the motor to draw excess current?

  • 2 weeks later...

Still haven't touched the engine due to snow etc but have fixed the roof.

My new module turned up and it got rid of the open circuit code and there was some slight progress in that the windows went down when you pressed the button but then nothing else. I found that manually opening the front of the roof then meant the rest of it would go down, although there were codes for position not feasible on the front motor.

I lashed up a test rig with a  motorbike battery and applied some volts to the front motor and got nothing. Managed to find one listed wrong on ebay for £25, fitted today and we have a fully working roof.

Step 3: apply quality lifting gear and raise the engine a bit

IMG_20230408_165323.thumb.jpg.a42faded05d25fda9c01baa8847e3643.jpg

Basically the longitudinal installation is a twat for getting the sump off, there is a subframe underneath it which stops you accessing about half the bolts and certainly stops you getting the sump out.

IMG_20230408_125427.thumb.jpg.df35f50b59e722ba45c22277165a018e.jpg

Not gonna lie, this was a pain in the arse. Most of the 10mm bolts holding the sump on were fine but there were some 16s between the sump and gearbox that had been done up by Thor. Really thought I was gonna have to drop the subframe anyway to get access at more than one point but with a random selection of extensions and a jack handle, I got them out.

Also shout out to these 10mms hidden in the bellhousing, weren't too hard to crack off but having to rotate the engine to undo them one at a time was a nice touch.

Anyway, some time later - HAVE THAT YOU OILY BASTARD

Fairly pleased to see the pickup is blocked up with shite so I can be pretty confident I don't also need a pump.

Leaving it there for today, off to my mum's for a couple of days tomorrow but will hopefully be able to blag a few more hours to put it back together and do the cambelt before another month passes.

Sump is back on, managed this in a brief window of not rain Tuesday morning.

Not many pictures as was too busy swearing.

I didn't think the sump was too bad at first look but the more I cleaned it, the more little lumps of carbon and flakes of sealant came out. This was the finished job before it went back on.

IMG_20230412_093526.thumb.jpg.9471968caa22a52f142efad267190dec.jpg

Out of curiosity I dug out the old pickup before it went in the bin. Lots of crusty carbon and a few slivers of sealant. Also a semi circle piece of hard plastic I briefly considered being concerned about then filed under "ignore"

IMG_20230412_124929.thumb.jpg.776e207f6ecd8e5fbbbf7656a5163708.jpg

I think it's probably going to be wise to drop the sump and replace the pickup every 3-4 years, should I happen to own it that long.

Cambelt done now and car more or less back together.

If you disregard the minor preparatory steps of removing the whole front of the car, the access to the cambelt is one of the best I've done.

IMG_20230415_132534.thumb.jpg.0f03fd1bc3bc08a003ce53b17d874123.jpg

Gates kit gone on with a metal impeller water pump. The one that came out was a metal impeller, but it was also leaking from the look of these pink crystals.

The engine was pretty filthy, I have tried to clean up around the cambelt area and down the exhaust side. I think from the point that the oil starts that all this came from the rocker cover gasket.

The timing marks are a bit vague as the crank one is on the damper pulley thing that has a little play in it. I marked up the new belt and make sure it went on with 68 teeth between the cam mark and a locating nubbin thing on the bottom pulley.

This engine has a 2 part tensioner with an eccentric bit and a hydraulic bit. The instructions I found were to reset the hydraulic pulley in a vice and tension the eccentric bit so there is 8-12mm between the 2 bits of tensioner.

IMG_20230418_134430.thumb.jpg.f2f5d42e054b4496fbe6eef45d63b923.jpg

Turned over a couple of times and all seemed OK so put the front back on.

IMG_20230418_182451.thumb.jpg.a27a0d529451d7fbea55082346547036.jpg

Left the lights off for now as I want to give them a sand/polish to remove the cataracts.

Hilariously I couldn't put any oil in or fire it up as the turbo drain to sump gasket I ordered 7 DAYS AGO still hasn't turned up. On checking it's not even shown as dispatched so thanks for nothing ebay seller lllparts you twat.

Fitted up the oil pressure gauge so I can check that everything is good when I am able to put oil in,

I've used them a few times, not what you want to hear, it normally takes about 2 weeks for stuff to arrive.

Decent prices and good for hard to get stuff, just not when you want it asap.

Hmm, checking the listing they are quoting 10-14 days delivery so this one is probably on me for not reading properly before ordering.

I might ring TPS tomorrow and see if I can talk them into giving me an account as a mobile mechanic or whatever, they are closer than the Audi dealers so would be very convenient.

Good luck with the local TPS, ours in Derby wouldn't let me open an account.

Don't know if true or not but I was told LLLParts hold no stock at all, when they have £XXk worth of orders they then order the stuff in from VAG/BMW etc, hence the long delivery times.

Parts collected, oil filled, road tested.

Oil pressure seems OK, after 5-10 seconds of alarming clattering it got to 4bar cold idle, and at hot idle 1.5 bar.

IMG_20230420_121001.thumb.jpg.31133a204291ec50b339bdb73eb69a6f.jpg

Cold 3000rpm was 6bar, hot 3000rpm was 4bar.

Some places on t'internet say I should be getting more like 5-6bar at 3000rpm hot but others say min 1bar hot idle and 3.5-4.5 bar hot 3000rpm. So I'll take that.

Just come back from a late night stint on a static bike for a 24hr ride thing at work.

Took the opportunity of the empty roads to do a quick 0-60 run as the last thing I did before the oil warning came on was flash this remap.

Before the remap my best 0-60 was 10.0 seconds vs a book time of 9.1.

Clocked 7.9 seconds. Based on the completely unscientific fact that the book time for the 200hp 2.0tfsi is 7.1 seconds I would guesstimate that puts my power somewhere in the region of 180-190hp.

Definitely feels a lot better to drive, stronger midrange pull and feels more turbo-ey if that makes any sense.

I'm always slightly surprised when I have an engine apart for major-ish work that it all goes OK when it's back together but the engine is yet to explode and the only fluid leak is a tiny drip from the power steering so I'll chalk that one up as a win.

I know that feeling... when you're sat there thinking 'fuck me, it actually works!' whilst simultaneously waiting for the other shoe to drop 🤣

Well done on your progress with the car mate, I've been enjoying reading this thread.

I'm sorry to see that your bike got nicked, but that's a result with the tracker and the police mate. I'd be really interested to know what tracker you have fitted, if that's something you're willing to share? I've thought about adding trackers to my cars before, seems like a sensible thing to do these days.

Nothing about recommending a tracker though! Or was that not of assistance to them in this case?

There is deffo an element of them trying to use FB etc for PR so if they can word it so it sounds like they didn't have it handed to them by the tracker then I guess they will.

I did comment on the picture about any bike owners reading getting a tracker.

And in slightly better news, I ended the day as a 2 VAN WINNER

Got booted off the drive after that though as it's blocking the electricity hole for the Zoe.
