Triang
I suppose 'Practical Classics' would be the obvious answer for us with 60s/70s/80s tin.But I find it terribly written ( does 'The Beano' provide the journalists?) and endless articles on which axle stands are the best soon begin to drag... In short I can read it in 10 minutes and find it unsatisifying. So the question is,
Guest Mr Hunter
For content, as you say, it has to be Practical Classics. But overall I reckon Classic and Sportscar is the king of the mags because it's less technical, and not being very mechanically minded (I may be in the minority here) I find all the technical articles as dull as watching an MG go by. Despite being an avid reader of PC, I'm actually going to vote for C&SC.How do I post my vote? trigger

I'd much rather read about the car, it's development, how it drove, it's social impact etc etc. When I drive my bus I go on an adventure - the age and patina conjours up that adventure for me. An old Mini/ Alfa Romeo and I'm in the Italian Job. An old Wolseley/Rover/Granada then I'm in the Sweeny etc etc. I want a magazine to reflect that. C&SC seems about as close as you can get. Marathon Man
I find that my copies of "Mayfair", collected during the late 70's from various park bins, laybys and obliging newsagents does the trick! cms206, trigger and Pillock

Guest Rich
Doesn't Playboy usually have features on exotic/expensive cars? Similarly, I think Razzle would profit from haveing a "Readers Wives Cars" section. Rich chodweaver and Richard
Guest Rich
oops sorry getting off the subject to hand here.Practical Classics for me, soley for it's Rust In Peace section, but also that feature where they have an old postcard photo from the past of a steet with cars in it. And of course Spotters Corner which points out all the mistakes they (always, every single issue, sometimes really blatantly) make. Mr H Sceptre
Yes, Practical Classic every time for me. I agree that the more technical atricals may as well be written in bloody Chinese as far as I'm concerned. Rust in Peace speaks for itself, but I also like the section you refer to as having the old photos in - its called Memory Lane. I get as much enjoyment trying to name all the cars in that as I do reading Rust in peace. Saying that, it does piss me off when the scene in question is from the 1950's/early 1960's.Any old photos from the 70's are worth having, its well worth trawling a few junk shops/market stalls for them as they often have old cars in them, plus 70's scenes are just worth having in their own right. Guest
I also think Auto Retro magazine is well worth a mention. Its a French job which I always make sure I grab a copy of when at a foreign airport (usually on sale in most European countries but for some reason not over here). Now my grasp of French is pretty basic so most of the articles are rendered useless, but it is riddled with items of old Renaults/Citroens/Simcas etc etc so the pictures are great in themselves. Also, the classifieds are the stuff of dreams, & suprisingly easy to understand.

Guest
...nowdays, probably classic and sportscar......the best magazine throughout the 70's 80's and 90's was 'car' i think, but in the late ninties it became a bit too mainstream and lost its irreverent streak....best mag for p l u..people like us...was jalopy and the ubg..used bike guide...great wee magazines written by and for people of our automotive bent!! pogweasel
Practical classics has become a dreary mgb-fest. It makes me wanna yak.The only thing I buy religiously now is 'Retro Cars'.BRING BACK 'JALOPY'!!! BEST MAG EVAR

r.welfare
Pogweasal is dead-on with his final comment there, Jalopy is top notch. I think I've got all the issues ever published (up to number 31, anyway).Had a subscription to Practical Classics that my dear old mum gave me for Xmas '04...I have not renewed it. I find the Martyn Moore team's features and general writing style tedious and error-laden. The 'golden years' of Will Holman etc seem a long time ago.PPC or Retro Cars for me, although I've never modified a car myself!
Minion
Retro cars for the feature cars and PPC for the technical features.I used to buy PC but it lost its sparkle when Will Holman left and I got sick of reading the same MGB buying guides every month! Guest
It's great to hear your opinions, Autoshiters. We're always looking to improve here at Practical Classics so keep up the feedback, whether it's good or bad (in fact the 'dislikes' are often more useful). How could PC improve? What would make you read it more? What bits really piss you off? What bits do you like?Great site by the way.CheersMatt

Pete-M
C&SC for me. PC has too many articles apparantly aimed at keeping Mr J.W.Gumby of Pontefract happy. Too many "Buy a shite car because it's 5 mpg better than the one you're too scared to buy, and the sills are easier to replace." type articles. Too much to keep Sherpa DHC owners happy. There's not much in PC for people who actually enjoy driving. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was in a PC group test that the comment "Too much understeer" was written in regards to a 3.0 Capri (Could have been an Escort RS). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy PC, but I take everything they write about cars with a huge pinch of salt. Their welding and maintenance tales are enjoyable, but there just isn't the depth of knowledge and experience of "proper" cars that C&SC has.Bollocks, I didn't notice this thread was 4 years old.
