captain_70s
Reading up the Volvo sunroof/scuttle drains into the A pillar box section, runs down the inside of the panel and out a hole. The forum I was reading referenced a rubber grommet, due to USA spec cars having AC instead of the fresh air flap. That goes hard and the water seeps by even if the drain isn't clogged, I imagine the same issue is happening for me around the air vent. The Acclaim rad is tiny, and rotten. The Polo one is about twice the size, so should aid cooling. Electrical faults are likely shit earths. It needs a good going over really, a lot of stuff is still clogged with dust from grinding and sanding paint because of the rush to get it MOT'd. Split_Pin
Crikey I wish Id known you were looking for a bigger rad for the Acclaim. I have a plethora of BNIB items in the loft that were bought in error over the years, one for a Megane and at least 2 Astra MK4 items. If the Polo one doesn't work out you'd be welcome to any of them gratis. captain_70s
big_al_granvia
try rodding the volvo drain with high tensile wire, or pop into a garage with a decent compressor and blast them out, w had the same issue on a scoob, 2 minutes with high pressure air sorted it
captain_70s
Remember this thing? Went over to measure up some shit for replacing the Acclaim's rad, Dolly still exists and even starts and runs well. captain_70s
T'was dry on Sunday. Had a new thermostat to go in. Obviously it didn't match the original, but it was the same diameter so in it went. Obviously the nuts came off pre-torqued for convenience... Obviously my fucking socket looked like this: Fitted. Minted. Went to the powerwash and some fuck nugget spent 15mins blasting the ever loving fuck out of his push bike. Then the machine wouldn't take a £2 coin so I had to do the whole car in 6mins... then got stuck behind another cyclist doing 6mph along Great Western Road. then it got cold Tickman, blackboilersuit, N19 and 20 others
captain_70s
Prep for the Crimbo run home. Didn't fancy taking the Acclaim over a mountain range with it's fucked rad, so Volvo it was. I wanted a radio and heater, so some reassembly had to take place. It took about 3hrs to rewire the radio (again) and fit the centre console bits, not aided by working at midnight and -3C. However the radio is now back to working in stereo, yay. This also happened to try and lessen water ingress. Didn't work. The screaming blower motor was removed but I couldn't get it apart enough to access to bearings, the shaft down the middle was very rusty. I oiled it best I could and chucked it back in. It works and isn't squealing any more but is increasingly unreliable as to the speed it'll run at. It needs replacing, obviously the assembly and motor are both NLA. With functional radio and heat the road was ready for a'hittin'. Convoyed from Stirling to Balmoral over Glenshee with @Supernaut From there I branched off onto the old military road towards Strathdon. Despite it being a bag of shite it's ability to absorb miles with no effort is impressive, all my other cars feel like hard work compared to the Volvo. Cruise would have been nice, working windscreen washers/rear wiper would have been nicer... On returning, I realise that my tracking may need some attention. Didn't look like that 500 miles ago... Other side is fine. Bad camber on one wheel? It has always pulled a bit to the left... Doesn't make any difference to the handling, obviously as I corner harder the weight transfers onto the racing slick edge of the tyre allowing even more grip. The Acclaim also saw a bit of attention, namely in that some unwanted water needed letting out... Who would have thought parts costing 1/3rd the originals would come with flaws? Does it provide a rail replacement service on the Trancentral Line? Oh and all the best with the Volvo. We had one in the family years ago and seeing your photos brings back memories. It was a manual; I drove it a few times, mostly forwards but occasionally sideways if the roads were damp. The dashboard used to shake under acceleration and the cooling fan howl would scare pedestrians. Shame it had to go, but the petrol consumption was ridiculous. captain_70s

The roads can get a bit lairy, but I keep a close eye on the snow gate cameras and weather forecast on the run up. captain_70s
"I just need to fuck about with the handbrake before the MOT, I'll find time". I didn't find time. Hence being out at 8pm after work in the rain the day before the cunt has to be dropped off. To adjust the shoes you need to pull the hub off, a design I hate. On the Dolly you can adjust the handbrake and wheel cylinder without taking the drum off, and the drum comes off separately to the hub. A billion times easier... This toothed adjuster is what I was hunting for. In theory it should auto-adjust. It doesn't. In fact when the handbrake lever was pulled the whole mechanism would move in/out with a loud clang. Getting the handbrake between "barely engaged at max pull" and "wheel locked sold when handbrake is off" was impossible. Something generally seemed fucky, to use the technical term, and without pulling the functional example on the other side apart I couldn't work out exactly what was wrong. So I chucked it all back together and wound up the cables a bit. The shoes were also scored and oddly crumbly. However brake shoes is not a job for the dark and wet, when springs vanishing into the void is highly likely. So I packed up and went inside. Winter MOTs are the fucking pits. Acclaim promptly dumped at the MOT station, it shall be tested tomorrow. I suspect a fail on handbrake, although it does mostly hold on the driver's side wheel alone. Suspected other issues are the front tyres and indicator flash speed. Place yer bets. In Volvo news fuck all has happened except a tree threw itself at it and a bird took a massive shite on it. captain_70s
There is actually somebody on the Acclaim page on Facebook doing his own mad weldathon, although he managed to get hold of a couple of hen's teeth NOS panels... Certainly a new phenomenon, nobody was welding up Acclaims 5 years ago. Then again, they're worth twice as much now, so it makes sense... I'm continuing to hoover up bits that crop up. On Saturday this arrived: NOS wing for the NS. Bit of surface rust where the coating has scuffed off in storage but the one on the car is a patchwork quilt that's rotten on the inside... I still need a bumper as my rear one is hopes and dreams (and fibreglass), but they're scarce. theshadow, blackboilersuit, Fumbler and 15 others

captain_70s
Acclaim collected and Volvo dumped at garage for a going over a month before the MOT is due to see if it's worth repairing. Tronda then used for some new build devaluing.
