I'm not actually sure that they did. I worked in a Jag/Rover/Triumph dealer parts department when the Acclaim came out, and the mudflaps were Unipart. I think most of the cars had them fitted after being sold or gifted them by the new car salesman.

Checked the brochure, only the front flaps were standard (ooh err), my mistake!

Better start stocking up the blue paint and duct tape 😂

Can blow over that tomorrow.

MOT booked for next Weds, garages seem to be swamped these days.

Cause of brake fail located:

Self adjuster had over adjusted and some bits of the handbrake linkage were seized, so the handbrake wasn't releasing reliably. I re-adjusted and unseized the seized bits with gentle persuasion.

I also bought some handbrake cables and the cheapest mudflaps I could find on eBay.

They're TR7 flaps but were the only ones available with the right 1980s logo on them and at £13 a pair they were worth a punt...

Wheels are on the agenda, wheels were actually planned before we realised that arse end of the car didn't exist.

Booked in at my local place, 'cause I work shifts and it's easiest to just drop it there the day before and then walk home in less than 5 mins.

They aren't too savage, the Cvic, despite being shonky, got passes, the Dolly and Acclaim both got fails but nothing that wasn't fair.

Crawled out of bed this morning on a giddy 5 hours of sleep and went to take the car for it's test in the freezing rain.

Turning the key results in the starter slugishly giving half a turn and then nothing.

Flat battery. Bollocks.

My jump leads are in the Dolly. Fucking bollocks.

I take the battery out and lug it upstairs to charge it. Can't find the charger. Destroy the flat looking for the fucking thing.

Attach battery to charger and... Nothing. Charger is dead.

Wiggling cables and cleaning connections does nothing but while moving the charger I note that turning it on it's side causes an angry buzz and the dial to jump about.

I violently shake the charger until it seems to be working consistently and gingerly place it down to charge for an hour.

After this time has elapsed the battery is refitted to the car and it actually starts. I dump it at the garage and walk home.

About an hour later:

So close... I dash up to the garage, take the Acclaim back to the flat and swap to the Saab to go to work.

This shall be rectified on Sunday...

Told you the bits we never touched would fail 😂

Still a win at the end of the day considering how much metal was cut out many branflakes were swept away and replaced on the wee car.

+1. There would be many people who'd have given up when they saw the extent of how bad it was. I'm still doffing my cap at both of you and your Stirling work.

Problem with replacing 2/3rds of a car is you still have 1/3 left!

As MOT fails go its a good one. No needing NLA parts, no issues with emissions. Rust looks to be a 5x5 square, if that, so will be rattled out in no time.

The last MOT at that garage wasn't as pretty!

They also know I work on the cars myself, so they've got no incentive to fail it hoping for work.

30mins at Ginger's Automotive Fabrications Ltd  and the inner wing is fixerated. It actually took longer to get the Herald and Dolly started and moved out of the way than it did to execute the repair...

No seam sealer or anything, to prove it's been seam welded. After it's MOT'd I'll seal and paint it a more appropriate hue.

Also stuck the plastic trim bumper trim back on, looks way less shit. Cabled tied on until the sealant dries, didn't fancy drilling holes in the new under grille panel...

Tomorrow I'll acquire and fit the appropriate numberplate bulb and that'll be us.

New bulb get, the old one is branded Stanley and Made In Japan, given the light fitting is also a Stanley unit I suspect it's been in the car from new. A mere 38 years of service, modern tosh. The new one is a modern "Lucas" branded one, so I look forward to replacing it again next week.

Car now ready for MOT. Bulb wasn't even a fail, I didn't realise that "minor defects" aren't actually a fail, so are essentially advisories under another name?

Yes.  There's essentially two levels of advisory now.  "minor defects" and "advisories".  That bulb failure wasn't a fail as it's one of two.  Were there only one plate lamp, that being out would be a fail.

There's also two levels of fail too.  "major defects" are a fail, but there is also "dangerous defects", which are identified as a reason not to drive the car any further.  It's questionable as to whether you're allowed/insured if you decide to drive the vehicle home after getting a dangerous fail.
