Rusty Triumphs in Scotland - Dolomite in "most reliable" shocker - 08/02/24

How very dull and japanese; with the doloshite you'd have had at least a couple of abortive coughs and then the inertia pinion retracting itself and the starter whirring away futilely. The true sound of a british motoring winter, an engine that won't bloody start. :D

lovely photos its awesome to see some low pressure sodium street lighting still, an endangered species especially as the last SOX lamp manufacturer closed its SOX lamp factory (and indeed the last lightbulb factory in the UK, up in Hamilton Scotland) in 2019

*ahem*

I mean, very awesome to see the Acclaim has passed its MOT and is back on the road, :) I look forward to seeing the other 2 Triumphs join it in time!

keep up the awesome work @captain_70s and @GingerNuttz

Been fannying about de-shittyfiying the Acclaim.

Firstly cleaning the interior again, because it's still fucking bogging.

Bought a little mini head for the wet vax to do the seats and carpets, bringing the total spent on my VAX 6131 to £8 'cause a mate lent it to me and then replaced all his carpets with laminate...

Then some experimentation with self adhesive chrome tape, as various bits of the car's original trim is deteriorating with age.

Sadly it's really not keen on corners...

That chrome insert stuff isn't that expensive.  If the seals are good and the joiners are present, you can get the relevant profile from various suppliers and install it with screwdrivers and patience if you have to.  I tried aluminium tape myself on the Princess' rear screen trims that have no curves and while it looked good for a bit, it soon started peeling off in odd triangles.  Still, for interior trim it usually works a treat and what you've done on the door card looks great.

Rear screen seals are NLA and mine are shagged. I don't even want to go near it, just gonna' fill the cracks with Arbomast and pray for it.

Watching your Maestro videos recently and I'm going to have to do a similar water leak hunt. The boot is filling up with comedy levels of water and the rear screen looks like a greenhouse,  reckon most of it is from the rear light seals (foam, also shagged), that Butyl tape stuff you used looks like it could sort that...

Will try application of heat on next application of tape and see how it lasts. I've left one quarter of the rear screen done to see what it does when exposed to the elements.

I wonder if you could mask off the trim and use a chrome paint on the insert, it was a consideration on my front screen before the new seals were available through the club.  Never did try the idea out.  Only issue with the butyl tape is getting it off once you've put it on, foam is easier to deal with if you can get it in the correct size.  I bet the water getting in on yours is going to be some piddly little pinhole somewhere, it's amazing how much water gets in a car through such tiny hidden holes.

*Triumph only runs on 2 cylinders*

That'll be that carb pilot jet blocked again...

Mustie1 to the beige phone. Have you tried the trick of bouncing it off the limiter then completely blocking the air inlet to let it suck all the shit through?

Does it have one? When FOAD redlined his the engine went a fair bit beyond 6500RPM... That might just be that particular car though. Interesting trick though, I wonder if anyone's videoed it being done?

Nah, it'll rev till the top end tears itself to bits somewhere north of 7k.

I was going to try the hand over the inlet trick but I was late already, so the Saab it was.

I may have a look before work tomorrow if there is a break in the rain. It cleared itself by magic previously.

If it had 4 carburettors then you could have driven to work on 3 cylinders...

Not untrue. I could have driven there with 4 cylinders if I'd kept the revs above 2,500rpm. However that's bad for my shagged clutch. 😂

Saab has a new quirk whereby it seems you have to tug the key upwards a bit while turning it or it just cranks the starter and doesn't fire. Cheers for @320touringfor suggesting the solution, otherwise I'd still be stuck at Tesco...

First sunny day for a while so went to try and diagnose the Acclaim's running issue.

153228736_10226410160099525_5690975707419938427_o.thumb.jpg.4bba295d45bc084cdb4572f163b9896c.jpg

Naturally the battery had gone flat again so I had to bump start the car down a hill to drive it round to the flat while it ran like arse. Once it was parked it stalled and the battery wouldn't restart it, so I swapped it's battery for a spare I had upstairs. Annoyingly this had Japanese standard terminals and one of the adaptor rings was missing, so ingenuity was applied.

152503152_770923956882467_8627152595094310663_n.thumb.jpg.d2a2412c604446ea55c8a3cb7cba9c97.jpg

I replaced the ignition control module, which did nothing.

I tried revving the car up and covering the intakes to try and suck any shite out, this also did nothing.

When trying to restart after stalling it kept backfiring through the carb and kicking and then immediately stopping dead like it was out of time. Checked the dizzy and that was tight and hadn't spun loose, so unscrewed the cap to have a look inside and found the issue.

The rotor arm had a good centimetre plus of slop on the shaft. The shaft itself was tight and the advance mech all seemed alright but the arm was loose as buggery. So I whipped out the spare from the boot that was known working when removed and... That was exactly the same. Somehow my dizzy shaft has worn in such a way the rotor arms won't hold true. I wedged a bit of thin carboard between the flat of the shaft and the rotor arm to test the theory and was rewarded with a car that would rev smoothly but not idle and was taching down far too slow.

It's hard to say if the lack of idle and slow return after revving is connected to the dizzy issue, I suspect I've just disturbed something in the throttle linkage while fucking about.

Gonna' try TIGing the dizzy shaft and file it down, 'cause I can only find one place that lists the dizzy as in stock and it's £150.
