Six Cylinders Motoring Notes - We are planning to reopen the Field of Dreams with groups of upto 6

Recommended Posts

Today we held a Field of Dreams event on our own, sad to say it is not the same as having you guys along.

For a start Mrs6C had to change a wheel and I had to do my own mowing!

The Pheasant was not happy with what I did to his field.

I hope the Wagtail was not looking for a nesting site inside my Range Rover wing.

Where did the milk float come from?

Keep up at the back, there! :-)

Molly the milkfloat has been resident since November 2019. Her original roof was removed many years ago as she has spent the last two decades as Santa's sleigh for the Machen Rotary Club. There is another roof with her but it's for another make of float so it's a bit short. With some clever bracketry it will be made to fit.

Sadly the illuminated reindeer didn't come as part of the deal... :-(

will admit I was wondering about that!

(am also curious was she mobile during her time as santas sleigh or was she used as a static display?)

Molly was fully mobile and worked from late November up until Christmas every year, travelling around the neighbourhoods of Machen and Caerphilly in south Wales, raising money for charitable causes. Her last season was Christmas 2018 and there used to be a video up on Facebook of her doing one her 'rounds' at night, all illuminated with Christmas music playing as well. Her headlight wasn't in use in the video, but I guess it was used to get her to and from where she needed to be. IIRC she has raised over £2m for charity over her time with the Machen Rotary Club.

Remember six years ago we were given an almost brand new Mercedes Benz from this very forum!

Well not quite new but it has been a very good car. Last year the heater became erratic and it was so good that when it went hot it was unbearable whatever the outside temp so I had it looked at. I had replaced the valve unit, but it turns out twice with faulty units, now a Merc special has found another one and it all works again.

The central locking has played up for some time and it has been diagnosed as the vac pump, just there seem several types so that is still on going.

Also it ran out of MOT last Oct while sat with the specialist so now it is MOT time. A Fail but not bad and I have instructed the work needed to get the MOT to be carried out.

So the W124 200TE is making its way slowly back to us.

It needs them!

Did you ever tell us about your W124?

I’ll have to get round to it. Strangely for one of these the front wings are amongst the better panels on it!

Just before lockdown occurred I was taking our Vanden Plas 1500 (Allegro) for a safety check instead of an MOT to a local garage I am trying out, when the clutch started screaming and dragging. They are working again now and it turns out the release bearing had seized and cut into the cover. I have supplied the new clutch so hopefully in the next 2/3 weeks it will get to the head of the queue.

I am speechless.

I‚Äôve recovered now, what is the plan for the ‚Äėfloat?¬†

Full-on restoration and then start a local home-made cider and obscure car parts delivery service?  Remake of that Father Ted episode? Or just going round and round the FoD until the batteries run out of juice?

Here we are again, there is NO plan!

Black Beauty has been away with my friends who own the Accord (non Shiters), because they think making my filthy cars shine again is more fun than being stuck at home with nothing to do!

I also had bought some better condition wheels and they used two of them to improve the look, well it turns out one of there neighbours is a mobile tyre fitter!

Oh its your job to get it going again, didn't you get the memo? I'd stick a multimeter and some bits of wire in the boot when you next come over to the FoD...

If your not driving round the field in it by sunset you've failed...

on a slightly more serious note, since she was driving before she arrived, while I don't know what she needs for road legality

I doubt she needs much to get her running around the FoD  I doubt you need anything more then a 60V power source, so if you can find 5 12V car batteries that should get her going, but i don't think it would go for a particularly long time

car batteries are pretty weedy for this sort of thing!

you could also sling some sort of 60V generator/alternator/motor on the back powered by some sort of engine

which would turn it into a mini diesel-electric locomotive/traction engine basically! :)

the only complication I could potentially see is she normally uses 30 2V cells and I dont know if any of those are tapped off at different voltages for whatever (I imagine at least 12V is tapped off or provided by an auxiliary battery for the lights and such)

Surely a Jerry rigged wind turbine or solar panels would be the best bet..
