Six Cylinders Motoring Notes

Anybody going to Brackley Classic Car show this morning?

I will be there in our Alfa 156 V6 Sportswagon. I was going to take the Volvo V70 T5 but it has flat battery and deadlocked itself so the only way in to release the bonnet is through the the boot and I need help with that.

To be sure it's mine look on the driver's side for the dented front wing and door, also the rear door is the wrong shade of silver!

I was thrown out of the Brackley Classic Car show for being to young!

Apparently there is a minimum 25 year old rule and I had to park in the street out of the display area.

It was a good show and would have been very hard to pick which of these cars to drive home.

This evening in the dark and rain ianbmw came round to help me and crawled through the V70 to release the bonnet catch so I could charge the battery.

I put the battery on charge and the hazards started flashing, but the remote would not switch them off or unlock the door deadlocks. Yes the battery was also flat in the remote. New battery in the remote and we will see what a night of charging does for the main battery.

Today we have been back working on the Saab engine.

Timing gears on, sump on, heads on, rockers on, valve clearances done, flywheel on and clutch on.

Then we hit a stop! We were getting ready to refit the inlet manifold and Adrian suggested we unbolt the thermostat housing as steel screws in an aluminium housing is a recipe for disaster. Sure enough one of of the bolts snapped! I now have a job to drill out a steel bolt in an alloy manifold.

Frustrating to get so close but run into more jobs needing done, but at least you found that gunk before it caused overheating rather than after.  Seems good progress is being made though.

I assume there's not just a spare manifold amongst the spares you could swap over to allowing the snapped bolt to be dealt with at your leisure further down the road is there?
