First stage of recovery is admitting the problem…quibbling over measure sizes…ha!

There are a number of clips at the FoD if you come up as planned.

It’s the GL next! I’m on a one man mission to annoy him by fixing his cars……but only cars he need to tax!

There is a Citroen CX and Alfa Giulietta both much more interesting cars that are free tax.

No It had a random no start issue and it has been with an Alfa specialist. He has been off work but next month it will be back with a fresh MOT.

Don’t tell him and he won’t see on here…..but it’s GL, Royale then I’m tempted to see just how broken the van is! I like the Mk4 cans and they are good old things.

im not rushing to fix the CF, that will only be done if a fuel pump appears, I’m not looking for one!

Today  @Slowsilver and his friend Thomas came over to help me put the Mercedes E320 Coupe into storage. This involved reorganising the storage as we had just been dumping cars in there so now we had to squeeze them up to make some room.

 

We then returned to fixing the Mini. This week new fuse box fitted, Hazard flasher unit fitted and working. Onto headlights and we found the inside of the main switch corroded along with connections to the o-s seal beam unit plug. There is smoke inside the o-s sealed beam unit so I don’t think it is long for this world. Shame as it is original with the cars number plate etched into the glass.  We then started the hunt for non working instrument bulbs but ran out of time. I have 5 types of capless bulb holders but none fit the Mini.

 

I managed to pump some oil out of the Carlton GL 1.8 Saloon engine as it was over full and smoking. @Mrs6Ccame home with an oil sucker pump from Lidl a while ago and this was its first use. It works but is slow is the verdict. I ran out of time so test running the engine with the oil on max instead of well above it has to wait.

No pictures from the first car task of today that @Slowsilver helped me with. We collected the Rolls Royce from the Auto Sparks in Aylesbury and got it into storage minutes before it rained. It now seems to show it is charging on the ammeter.

Car job two with Geoff who did the Mini Mayfair welding was he removed the heater so he could take it home to replace the heater matrix that is leaking.

Car three was @ianbmw quest to get the Carlton saloon back on the road. It did not go well as it still smokes very badly. Also a metal power steering pump pipe is leaking badly.

On the positive side Ian repaired and reassembled the driver's door handle so that now works and he even put the interior door panel back on. Bonus was to find a Philips radio/cass of a suitable appearance in the car.  The wiring has been hacked about to fit a more modern unit at some point in time.

It’s an interesting one, now we’ve run it, I want to do a compression test cold and hot and see what we have.

 

it will also be interesting to see if the oil level has risen. The Brake servo holds pressure and there has been no obvious drop in levels.

Regardless it will get fixed, just to annoy @Six-cylinder. However if an engine strip down is on the cards, the Royale is going to jump the queue as that really needs the Carb putting back on and some lines made up.

 

anyone mentions the CF, you will be met with a nightmares of Trabant driving route 66.

It’s all go this morning in preparation for returning the Carlton either today or tomorrow. The advisory of an iffy fuel hose has been done.

the Carlton is now getting a bath so @Six-cylinder is „“ happy with what we have done to his car“

Today did not work out as planned. Plan “A” was to finish getting the Sigma back together and running after the head gasket change with a local mobile Mechanic Phil.

I asked Phil to come to the house first and check the fuel pump on the Citroen DS as it has been broken and sitting in a public layby near our house for the last 3 weeks. The car was on its belly up against a hedge and Phil concluded he could not work on the car where it was parked. A plastic bottle with petrol and gravity feed pipe was held by Phil while I reversed the car home! With the aid of two 3 ton jacks Phil climbed underneath and found the pump. He checked the pump was getting power and concluded the fuel pump was dead. A new pump has been ordered and the car is safely on the drive.

Poor old Sigma is going to have to wait a bit longer.

In spite of my doubts about the garage who had failed the Carlton I think they may have had a point with these pipes!

Needed dinner, with an unenthusiastic child who didn’t want to walk……best take the  Carlton.

In theory, assume it doesn’t fail me, it’s going to Malvern and back tomorrow, which will breach the 500 miles since MOT mark……I will then deem it „“fixed“ and give it back to @Six-cylinder…….where it will no doubt fail the day he turns the key.

How did you tackle the unobtanium inlet manifold gasket for the Sigma?
