I choose a scenic route to visit the Saab and had to cross a toll bridge that cost 60p, it must be a while since I last used it as I remembered it as 20p!

My neck of the woods. It’s a pain to cross sometimes and causes a good bit of traffic. If you pay by card they charge £1 and give you 40p change back!

It’s also the smoothest bit of road locally, just the bridge. At the top of the hill is where Castrol have their R&D facility. Lots of test mules seen entering and leaving , often at night when putting miles on oils.

That could be the last time I was over there - had a conference meeting at Castrol years ago. Hard to claim 20p on expenses when they don’t give a receipt!

A nice outing this morning to a small gathering at Pure Triumph Woburn. A trip out for the 230TE, yesterday I looked at it and decided it was clean enough for a winter outing. I went out to it this morning and wet it looked awful with black patches of dirt on the roof. I popped into a hand carwash on the way and they did a very thorough job blasting of all the edges including the sunroof. The water poured in and I cupped my hands to catch it and put my coat over my legs to try and keep dry.

I had an out of county guide @hairnet to teach me about the bikes!

For me the car of the show was a beautiful Triumph Vitesse 1600 with low mileage.

I also have to make a special mention for the Zodiac that make me think of an aircraft carrier!

Zodiac looks good - restored or original?

Re that Saab, changeover point for the facelift was 87 model year in late 86, so flat front on an E would be a unregistered car hanging around a dealer, which didn’t happen much with Saabs in the economic boom of the late 80s.

Rose Quartz was the colour of my dad’s 900 saloon, bought in May/June 1986 I think, it was on a late C plate. I got a Saab baseball cap from the dealer, sadly long gone. Will bring back some memories if you do get it! 😉

I may have done something silly, but I don't think so.

I have been trying hard to cut back on the car buying, but would like a winter beater so have been looking at cars for sale. This 1963 Peugeot 404 caught my imagination and like a moth to a flame I was drawn to it. I know this does not fulfil the brief but for a moment I dreamed I was in the South of France and this was a good idea.  @Harriytait thank you for selling it to me and I am looking forward to the spring and getting it running.

Really sad to see her go, I’ve never bonded with a car as much as I have with her, I’m glad she’s gone to a good home!

That 404 looks cooler than it has any right to be. I reckon the pretend 'Murican plates help - I quite like them.

Lots of photos of it on the googles, including wearing it's (original?) blue.

Great to see it being resurrected on here.

Our next door neighbours at RAF Bruggen (Germany)  had a beige 404. I was given a lift in it a couple of times. It was a very refined and comfortable ride.  I think it was fairly new. This was 1966.

I've always preferred the 404 rather than the very staid Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford Farinas.

Unbreakable engine, superb ride and handling, one of the nicest gearchanges of any car, servicable heater.... it's the perfect winter daily. My one didn't have a proper roof so it never quite managed to fulfill that role (and it used to run out electricity when using all the lights/wipers), but I reckon there are few better real-world daily drivers from that era. I very nearly went for that one, but was relived it sold before I had a chance... let me know if you ever want to sell, please!

Edit: I possibly have a workshop manual or two knocking about if you're interested?

I was far too early picking up the Passola from H.... So was giving this the once over, ummimg and ahhing to myself. Too many projects in the go right now kept me from jumping on this just to own that interior.... It's lovely.

What's the plan/timetable guesstimation for the welding?

I have far too many projects but when you fall in love you just have to go for it.

The plan is to get it running as soon as possible as I have an indoor storage spot for it 6 miles away, but only when it drives. It is a solid car and yes there is some welding to mainly outer panels but I will be happy to drive it as is. It looks like electrics are going to be the hardest part to get it up and running safely.

@Harriytait included a couple of alternators and I plan to use one to replace the dynamo, as I remember running a Triumph Vitesse as a daily in the winter.

Thanks to @Andyrew lending me his black Astra I am not going to be forced to use it every day in the winter, but I am hoping I will be able to use it, even looking like it does, for some of the local Christmas/New Year car events.

I have the Autobook Workshop Manual and Intereurope  repair manual thanks to Harry. Do you have any others?

will you be launching the plate and getting a normal one

do these have crossplies or is yours too late

New raised-digit plates would look great. I don't think anything in France had crossplies in the 1960s. iirc should have Michelin Xs or XASs, or Cinturatos. Handling is superb

I am concerned about the legal situation using the USA style plates with the British number on it. @LightBulbFun on the Autoshite zoom last night pointed out the deficiencies of the pressed British black and silver plates that came with the car, but I think Mrs6C and I are in agreement that there are lots of things it needs before new posh number plates so I think the ones in the boot will go on for now.

There is also an American plate in the boot if anybody can tell me anything about it? Texas C87 YYF

Colour wise I believe it left the factory maroon,  spent a long time dark solid blue and I like both of those. I think 404's look best in white, but we are a long way off having to make that decision.

Tyres seem to be recent Nankangs 185/80 15, with the rears having a town and county look like many cars of that era.

Todays treat was the collection of our 1999 Volvo V70 T5 SE Auto with a fresh MOT and that pesky engine warning light extinguished having had a new cam sensor, we will see if the light stays out.

Volvo V70 T5, where did that come from, please keep up at the back we have had it 16 years!
