The Return of an old friend!

I bought my teenage pin up car in 2011, a 1971 E3 BMW 3.0 S 4 speed manual,  MOTed and running. Because it was running roughly a friend from the BMW club borrowed my E3 and did several improvements including fitting Weber Carburettors to replace the Solex ones we couldn't get spares for. Unfortunately my friend was not well, followed by world events has meant the car sat around for 5 year, I believed it was indoors but sadly it was outside.

I now have the car back and @ianbmw offered to have the car at his house and give it a once over. The car starts and drive and while cosmetically challenged is very solid. Ian refused to do a proper test drive on the grounds the tyres were knackered so this morning we took it to a local tyre shop for 4 new Uniroyal Rain Expert tyres. It smells of old petrol and while it does not have a misfire performance is very flat. It had an 8th of a tank of stale fuel so we have filled it with a tank of Esso's best and hope that will improve things.

A friend’s dad had one ( local solicitor ) with I am sure a blue cord interior. Weird how from the rear quarter angle it looks like a Mercedes !

He had CGJU 1 as the reg I think ( my friends initials are the reg, and his wife had smaller BMW’s in the same silver blue with CPU 1 as the reg.

Was that standard?

I only remember the 535i M spec having a dogleg gearbox. My 535i was an SE so a standard shift Patten.

My other E28 was an early 525i 5 speed manual.

As far as I know it might have been specced from new. It was a barn find (almost) I am trying to find the mag it got featured in, its in the loft somewhere.

My grandad had an E21 323i (OYM145Y) which had a normal 5-speeder, but the owner’s manual showed a dog-leg ‘box as an option on some models. I know there were options for standard and close ratio 5-speeders on some of these earlier series Beemers.

Found some of the details.  E28  BMW 528 Ci, 2788cc Reg number, B214RLM, Alpine white, first registered March 1985.  Pleased to say it is still taxed and MOTd, to July this year.  Still looking for the mag. The car was left unused for several years. The person I bought it from was a journalist, or friend of one, and wrote an article about re-commissioning it that was published in late 1990s. It was from that article I put an offer in, and it was accepted. I had it for 3 -4 years, and enjoyed it.  I was informed by a BMW specialist that where the bulkhead and front of floor joins it had rotted out across the width of the car, as well as other areas, and repair was "not practical" . Obviously that was not the case, as more than 10 years on, it is still on the road.  I know that mag is somewhere!

Batteries are new, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're good - I've had a couple of dudd button cells lately new out the packet.

I'll happily take a look if it's helpful, there's not really much to it, doesn't look like there's much there by way of components which are prone to just randomly dying while on the shelf either.

If you look at the output (infra-red) LED with a phone camera, you should be able to see this flicker when the button is pressed. If so, the problem is with the receiver unit which can sometimes get a bit furry from aerial leaks.

No flicker can be seen.☹️
