Oops

Anything more than 50 miles it gets lubed every day

Had fucked links but never that touch wood

You could easily fix that with a link and a hammer but would hgb in Wycombe be open tomorrow or nog in oxford

I've eased off the lube a bit as it was getting on the tyre but generally keep it oily.  Problem was I should have adjusted it before I left but didn't get round to it.  Felt it starting to get loose about 20 miles back but didn't have the right tools so thought I could nurse it home gently.

Got the peugeot going then!

Yes, at least whist I was driving it. Then I stopped and it wouldn’t go again- the coil was too hot to touch. Could be dead, but it was wired up incorrectly too ( everything in this car is wired wrong). Replaced the coil and started it up but it’s not charging. So dynamo is kaput. Or wiring is wrong.
on the plus side, the horn, lights and wiper motor work and I drove my first column change car.

Thanks as ever for your hospitality @Six-cylinder& @Mrs6C, and the offer of reliable transport if needed!

Some of it was enjoyable - the first part of the journey down, and the fireside chat with @catsinthewelder& @Talbot...it was stupid 'o clock by the time we retired to bed. The less said about the middle bit the better! I'll put more details on the Stellar thread rather than derailing this one.

  • Six-cylinder changed the title to Six Cylinders Motoring Notes - FoD open today Monday, I will be fixing the bodywork on the Peugeot 404.

Had a great, if brief, visit on Saturday, thanks so much to @Six-cylinder& @Mrs6C for hosting.

Good to put some faces to names on the forum.  Highlights were riding the Land's End - John O'Groats hero bike, learning some lessons on towing and more than I ever need to know on lightbulbs.  Special mention to @richardmorris for showing us his amazing X/19, so many pleasing bits of design.

Saturday was a FANTASTIC day!

The weather was perfect and a great turn out of willing helpers saw the Saab 95 project, Peugeot 404 advance. Children's camp was built, tea was drunk, car fixing was done and a campfire finished the evening.

I am going to get the camping field sprayed against LDV for next time!

I am looking forward to today Sunday and I will be at FoD from 10am.

its a nice comfortable place to sit

I look forward to trying out the column gear change in time, just sitting in the car and shifting it about it seems intuitive enough, its just your standard H pattern type affair coming out of the side of the steering column

and many thanks to @mat_the_cat for bringing me a nice 1980's vintage 5ft Fitzgerald light pack complete with original Philips made Fitzgerald branded T12 tube :)

have to say I loved the surrealism of just a old fluorescent fixture being lit up in the middle of nowhere field at 1AM in the morning :) (something id love to do using REV in time)

(and many thanks to @beko1987 for the tin of old Hoover bulbs, I look forward to going through those once I have recovered :)

and it was interesting to see how the fog-lights on @Andyrew's  Allegro actually have "Allegro" moulded into them I figured they would of just been an off the shelf/parts bin lucas/BL item

A jolly good weekend. Good company as usual. THE_SCHTCH weren't to be seen during the days we were there because we went to Bletchley park to learn about code breaking. We went to Bletchley on the Friday and the National Museum of Computing on the Saturday. Having now been to both I would say that, even ignoring the entry prices, don't bother with the main Bletchley Park. Go do the Computing Museum. The staff are much more informative if you get the talk on The Bombe, The Tunny and Collossus. I learned way more listening to those guys about how they broke the Enigma and Lorenz cyphers than all the reading I done at Bletchley.

WOMAN_df2k also enjoyed herself and even learned some car stuff, mostly in the electrics department thanks to WOMAN_ @juular.

We went home via the M1 / A1 / A66 / M6 / A74(M) / M74 and were treated to an utterly spectacular sunset at Brough summit. The photo just looks like lens flare but no that's how it looked to the eye.

Did they mention that the Poles broke Enigma in 1932?

The guys in the computing museum didn't but to be fair they were mainly focused on the machines that they had. Although sort of part of the Bletchley Campus, they are a separate entity with  their own admission fee. They are not there to tell the story of code breaking but did it anyways and did it better than the Bletchley museum. I dare say a guided tour of Bletchley may have yielded better results than wandering about ourselves.

I was aware that the Poles had got in to Enigma first and I do remember reading something about the Bomba machine(s) in Bletchley but I can't remember the details.
