Not a lot in Kentshire, a three wheeler (morgans etc) museum at Rolvenden and a "Transport Museum" at Dover. I have been to the former and it is suitably shite and shed like. I have not done the other one as Dover is usually a place you are trying to get out of.

I've been to Dover several times. It's an excellent museum but it's certainly not packed full of FSO's and Austin Ambassadors like Stondon. In fact the only cars in there that could probably be considered as shite are an ex AA Peugeot 309 and a Rover 75 that was the mayor of Dover's official car until it was retired. There's a lot of pre-war stuff and motorcycles, a couple of old fire engines, buses etc.

http://www.myretonmotormuseum.co.uk/Myreton Motor Museum in Aberlady, East Lothian. Some quality vintage stuff mixed in with some utter shite. My favourite exhibit is a bounced cheque that somebody paid their entry fee with in 1981 and it's still on display along with the letter from the bank. The Museum of Flight is nearby, which isn't cars but some people might be interested in.

That's not far from me, to my shame not been there in ages. Was pretty good the last time I went. Not that well known and a bit off the beaten track.

Two museums of Big Boys Toys that I can recommend:

The Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham Kent. Lots of tanks/bridge layers etc. So good that I have been three times.

The tank museum in Dorset near Monkey World. The only downside to that one was that we had to do Monkey World as well to keep Mrs D happy after three hours of looking at tanks.

The Whitewebbs Museum of Transport is worth a visit if you happen to be nearby on a Tuesday, which is the only day it opens.    The museum is in Crews Hill, near J25 of the M25  (Enfield, A10 etc).  Due to the odd opening times I was nearby for over 15 years before I managed to visit.

There's a small but varied selection of exhibits, many of which I believe belong to members of the club that runs it.  It also features a bewildering exhibition of random tat, a derelict Landcrab outside and a permanent autojumble-style shop.

If the volunteers manning the place like the cut of your jib they might allow you to you peer into the cavernous dripping well in the basement.  The place was originally built as a water pumping station to supply drinking water to London.  The well is truly enormous - 14 feet in diameter and 200 feet deep.  According to the museum website a couple of horizontal tunnels branch off from the bottom, one of which is 700 foot long.

I've been past this place loads of times and always forgotten to Google it when I got home. Would be an excellent AS visit. Right on PBK's doorstep!!

another scottish one with a Bond flavour

Santa train too soon!

I've been to the Bond Bar upstairs a few times (tipec (the indipendant porsche enthusiasts club) hold their monthly meetings there) but never managed to get a look round the museum.

Just round the corner there is a railway museum which is pretty good, i imagine there are a few rail fans on here too ?

If you're after speedy shite with a touch of tank shite, then the Donnington museum is for you.

http://www.donington-park.co.uk/about-donington/the-donington-grand-prix-collection/

This has the most incredible collection of old F1 cars possibly maybe in the country. I know that modern F1 is just like watching Scalextric, but these are from those 'good old days'

The Birmingham and Midlands Motor Omnibus Trust museum (just south of Birmingham, it will be no surprise to learn) is great.  it almost made me want to swap my 800 Sterling for an AEC or Bristol.

Closed for the winter but they do have event day such as the eastern bloc one in May 2015:  http://www.bammot.org.uk/eventdays.asp

  • 1 year later...

Holy thread resurrection Batman.

Last week we both had that feeling for a short break (It has been seven years) so on the spur of the moment flights and accommodation were booked, rental car sorted and we're Barbados bound.

The mornings are beach, sea and sun......the afternoons are for exploring the island. By chance we learnt of a private motor collection that is open to the public in the mornings only, so beach towels thrown in a bag and off we went.

Mallalieu Motor collection.........owned by an old boy whose real business I never did learn, but next to his offices is a largish shed that has treasure within. He likes to be away at twelve ..... and it was twelve but we got to look around for fifteen minutes or so. Nice old guy didn't mind at all but is stone deaf, so we weren't always on the same page, but I did get a few snaps.

If we're continuing the thread resurrection....

The Wirral Transport Museum in Birkkhhhen'ead has a nice little collection of buses and trams. And a few cars too.

If you're lucky you can even get a vintage tram to it from the Woodside Mersey ferry terminal.

The 6th best thing to do in Birkenhead according to TripAdvisor. Praise indeed.

Time to give a shameless plug for Aldridge Transport Museum, small but not shitty though of course :)

http://www.amrtm.org/

We have a good selection of buses including the mandatory Routemaster (ex Birmingham Probation service though), probably the oldest Transit pickup in existence and an A40 ice cream van :o

The next open day is on October 16, with museum and visiting buses on a choice of routes as well as the museum being open. Catering is a bit limited though as we only rent the building.

BTW the museum is second in Tripadvisors list of the top tourist attractions in Aldridge :)
