HMC
Interesting to look back at the earliest entries. I think it might be something to do with migrating old stuff onto new servers but some entries look like frenzied lists with no gaps (appropriately enough). Especially @wuvvum’s list even back in 2007 was immense and overwhelming to read 😆 Isopon

rickvw72
Discounting stuff I’ve bought to trade.... 1972 Beetle - first car, still got 1988 Ford Fiesta Popular- learnt to drive in this 1990 Peugeot 309 1.3 style - changed the fiesta to this once I passed, great car 1987 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. Wally trolley and horrendous to insure at 19! 1976 VW Camper. Couldn’t afford Bug, 205 and this, so the 205 was sacrificed. Owned 5 years, lived in it pretty much Summer of 2005, think that year I slept in it around 100 nights. If cars could tell stories..... 1990 Peugeot 309 1.3 Style . This time a red 3 door, cheap and abused to hell and back. Better than the Bug and Camper on fuel and avoiding hyperthermia. Winter workhorse. 1997 Peugeot 306 1.6 meridian. Bought from my dad, and I sold back to him after. Then sold to my brother. Brother partner writes it off. I rebuilt it after getting back from insurance. It ended its days many years later as a family runabout, no one really sure who actually owned it, and registered as a cat c 3 times over. Must have been around for a decade all told. 1989 Volvo 740 Estate. 2.0 petrol. Cheapest car with mot and tow bar on ebay. Kept it over a year. Made from granite, accelerated like granite too. 1997 Peugeot 405 Estate 1.9td. Lucas pump with a smoking habit. Temperamental electrics but a great car, not that economical in reality at about 40 mpg (put 50k on it too) 1999 Peugeot 406 Estate HDi 110. Bought to replace 405, was much nicer as a car. Broke so often it wasn’t useful as a car. Sold to become a rabbit rescue vehicle of all things. 1990 VW Golf GTI 16v. Still got and won’t be leaving probably ever. Bought smashed up and towed home on a trailer by smoky 405, This was in 2008! Repaired with used bits, blew over and on the road a few months later. Everyday car for years and years, 3 engines, gearbox rebuild in the time span at various points. Wound up with 170bhp 2.0 engine and a full body restoration between 2015-2018. Done about 70k in this, many of them above 5000 rpm! Glorious thing 1989 VW Caravelle. Still got too, great thing. Complicated story this one, bought as a stop gap, after I bought a westfalia bay window for restoration. It was so much nicer than a bay window, I’ve had it 12 years. (It’s behind the golf in pic) 1990 Volvo 940 Wentworth Turbo estate. Should have kept this, tail happy and loved a drink. 1993 Range Rover 3.9 Vogue SE. Wish I still had. Owned 4 years, Westminster grey and fully loaded. Was fully rusty after a few years and I reluctantly let it go. 1994 Daihatsu Fourtrak. Rougher than a sandpaper factory. Awesome off road. Noisy and indestructible. Sold it for quarry off-roading, and it lasted years more. 1997 Isuzu Trooper 3.1 td. Recovery wagon / workhorse. Nearly as tough as Daihatsu, more refined. Not as good off-road. 1998 Audi A4 TDI 110 Avant. Tough old thing this. Worked it hard. Finally died at 250k nearly. 2004 Volvo V70 D5. Looked and sounded awesome for a cheap estate. Didn’t like bends though and it weighed roughly 2.7 colliseums. Which ruined suspension parts for fun. VW Golf GT TDI 130 , much maligned mk4. Only sold it last year. 0 window regs needed in 50k, never had an issue really. New owner has tidied it right up and it’ll last years yet. 1999 Fourtrak. 80k from new, uk spec TDX. I bought this when I graduated as a teacher at 35. I’m still welding the heap now 4 years later. Thread on AS for this one. 2007 Honda Accord 2.2 ictdi tourer. This has everything, sat nav, heated leather. Not bad for 700 quid. Goes well, 50mpg, handles well for a barge. Amazing bit of engineering. danthecapriman
My list is nowhere near as long as some here, but in my defence I tend to keep cars a long time instead. neil1971
I probably don't fit in too well here (or anywhere!) as I've not had too many in 33 years of driving and only on my fourth since 1992! Fiat 127 UME13S, first car when I was 17 in 1988, £200 including six months of tax, scruffy but pretty reliable, funded by a paper round, tidied it up with filler and rattle cans before a Car Mechanics feature where they repainted an Audi 100 with Cannon Repaint brush paint inspired me to paint it black. Obviously they were much better at painting than I was as it didn't look great. Sold to someone at my mum's workplace a couple of years later for slightly more than I paid as their first car and think it got crashed. Lancia Fulvia Coupe NMG472L, probably my only interesting car. Loved them but didn't have the money for a nice one, bought this solid but scruffy one for £1200 out of Exchange and Mart. It broke down on the way home from Croydon (alternator), got it fixed and decided to be sensible so sold it to a restorer shortly afterwards for £1600 so at least didn't lose on it. Never taxed or tested since, would love to know what happened to it, it wasn't pretty but would have thought it was too good to break up Fiat Uno 60S C619UPE, after leaving school and going to work I saved some money and bought this in around 1990 I guess, sold to some people from Colchester after enduring a few messers. Ford Fiesta 1100 THM507S, around £200 from a local home trader when you couldn't really buy a Fiesta for much less than £500, looked awful but mechanically OK. Boiled over on my first journey in it, didn't know the temperature gauge read low so a quarter was normal and middle was hot, thought I'd bought a dog but noticed a slight split in the radiator cap seal, replaced that more in hope than expectation and was good as gold after that. Eventually refused to run on four cylinders but did run nicely on three, at the time I was working as an estate agent and after pointing out to my boss that this car maybe didn't exude the professionalism that they aimed for, this went to Basildon Car Auction and I became the keeper of... Ford Fiesta Popular 957cc, F872MAR. The lowest rung of the company car ladder but as someone else was paying I couldn't complain. Not nice, dog slow and not particularly economical as you had to thrash it to keep up with the traffic. Jealous of the Mk3 Fiestas and manager's Mk4 Escort! Moved jobs so back to paying for my own motoring Fiat Uno 60S, D474PVH, bought in 1992 with 70k ish miles, think it was around £1500 and had it until 2001 by which time it had 235k on the clock, loved it and much better than the Fiesta to drive, but just worn out in the end and couldn't justify spending what it would have needed for the MoT, no single major issue but was starting to need welding, tyres needed replacing, steering column bush was knackered so reluctantly drove it to the scrapyard, still running perfectly albeit a bit smoky by now. Thread and pics here Fiat Punto 55SX N734AHJ, £3000 ish 2001 to 2008, 30k to 150k miles I think, wore it much better than the Uno and was in good shape until I sold it to a work colleague for her daughter to learn to drive in it, sat on their drive for a couple of years hardly used before her dad scrapped it. Pics further down the Uno thread Nissan Almera Flare YS53BOV, 2008 to 2016, £2700 via eBay and relying on photos, paid the the dealer to deliver it to Essex from Bradford (I know) as it was cheaper and easier than going to get it myself , was driven down on trade plates and he got the train to his next collection, car was 100% as described and no problems. Took it from 38k to 170k, never once let me down, I know lots on here don't like them but mine was a good car. Eventually started smoking heavily but still running well, couldn't rehome it on here even at £125 with a year's test so ended up oval bound. For sale thread here 2011 Nissan Note N-Tec 1400, owned from 2016 to date, of no interest to anyone I expect, £2750 from a small trader in Kings Langley, been as reliable as the Almera was, 89k when I got it and now on 154k, only done about 3000 miles since Covid kicked off due to home working etc. Pictured before Xmas after its first wash in two years.
