S A Barrett's Sussex shite spots: 2022/23 catch-up

Hello. Here's the first batch from my new phone. Starting out with an autumnal Polo with the Xantia sneaking in the background

20191108_132358.thumb.jpg.c34bd23a6a72530a7a0af46e5f936663.jpg

These next lot are all Kent coast sightings. I really, really like this bit of Kent but the tat levels are disappointingly low, though what's there is of a pretty high quality. I can't remember the last time I saw a rough street-parked mk2 Escort

20191109_154218.thumb.jpg.0cdd405712f9650d50a15582179cf8d7.jpg

I actually saw this on street view by chance but assumed it would be long-gone as it's in the gateway of a backstreet garage, so it was a pleasant semi-surprise find. Definitely one of the highlights of the year so far

20191109_154806.thumb.jpg.4ecaf8e2590da93ae1a07047096baf54.jpg

same location, a Miller cycle Maz on forrin plates. Looked pretty abandoned to me but who knows

20191112_191833.thumb.jpg.d136dfd051f441381f53829ba76994ce.jpg

Pretty damn superb W123 hearse. I would definitely drive an old hearse. Good 'what's in the garage?' pic20191111_152954.thumb.jpg.ce24f1e7bf1622d1305b9748422b503e.jpg

Xantia from Xantia. Amazing how rare these have become  but also not amazing at all considering I've killed two personally

20191111_155830.thumb.jpg.24db7574537616a926134e1c1c2202e1.jpg

And here's a Rover with the worst DIY paint job I've seen in a long time

20191111_153329.thumb.jpg.9c257c76d1e1542d3a833260bde17b1f.jpg

Here's some from today. I did an auto jumble in Midhurst and these were all in the car park. I like how wonky these early lwb station wagons look

20191117_130310.thumb.jpg.c3188cb279702ef59a0ed0cc20106a18.jpg

I guess this is of interest just because it was so immaculate. I did get the number if anyone feels an overwhelming urge to own it

20191117_130411.thumb.jpg.0b27731b23a2f6d0a955f12e66df7705.jpg

This is cheating as it belongs to my friend. It's his 'modern' car and it's a total shed. Rusty bumpers, filthy wheels, terrible paint. Glorious

20191117_130334.thumb.jpg.7347f2dfcbac6de1ddac3fbdf9c550e0.jpg

I've known about this for ages but have never had an opportunity to photograph it before. Again, just pure, finely distilled shite of the highest grade, and still working hard for a living. The owner is exactly how you'd imagine, too

20191117_130444.thumb.jpg.c0ab5d347ebc6fc74d4b0aba6e03be6e.jpg

That's all for now

Right then, here's what eight days in Portugal will get you. Overall impressions were a little disappointing - lots of dull modern cars with a smattering of early '90s bilge but little else. I have the feeling if I'd been there 10 years ago the streets would have been teeming with rammle, but the tourist trade has certainly changed the country's main cities a great deal recently and an influx of foreign property investors has probably irreparably ruined a lot of the atmosphere there. For non-non-shite purposes it was bloody great and I'd reccomend it to anyone who likes crumbling buildings, 1970s signage and good cheap food (and walking).

My first wander round Lisbon netted the previously posted, and these.

20200110_164436.thumb.jpg.7983c3358d052b249e0d4a0758319cc9.jpg

20200110_164659.thumb.jpg.8cd8ecaf0214b172872e63ddc0dec986.jpg

Tried to get away with a subtle pic here but was rumbled, which soon developed into a fun* game where my missus tried to jump into frame every time I snapped a car. Hilarious.20200111_001108.thumb.jpg.22c7eac5f7bd8742b40f1871b02bcf49.jpg

This was a highlight. Looked absolutely mint, unlike a lot of the older cars I saw

20200111_165816.thumb.jpg.096b99fd63e439f010e0b705c302d1be.jpg

Really satisfying spotting the old black and white plates on stuff20200111_170619.thumb.jpg.e90287fc32abcc457085db3ccb22f751.jpg

Lots of R4s around, easily the most common old car, whilst I only saw a couple of 2CVs

20200111_171625.thumb.jpg.7a5dc051bd0138b7ac7970902678aadc.jpg

fewer old commercial vehicles than I had hoped, but still a handful of older things playing various trades

20200111_171756.thumb.jpg.637a1e9f6a23592917bfbaa811c38506.jpg

Another one, just behind the Mitsubishi

20200111_171827.thumb.jpg.97d8c130e09de4e027e0be5b7bf61c49.jpg

And this was a couple of cars along

20200111_171900.thumb.jpg.14e87c7e2491d5182390ef761d8c76ed.jpg

There were loads of R5s about, and even more AXs, Unos and Pandas

20200111_190544.thumb.jpg.48ce2c1f22cabdfe2acb5d1fe405c138.jpg

another highlight. In a 'cool' bit so presumably owned by a hip young blade rather than an old duffer. Looked very tidy

20200111_220039.thumb.jpg.57884fe1f7169f0a959ca6f367b76111.jpg

another one...

20200112_134927.thumb.jpg.65c252f8f585addf28bbde592a459bc2.jpg

lots of cool car-based vans not familiar in the UK. I had no idea these existed but it looked great. Novas (well, Opel Corsas) were also very common to the point I only photographed a small handful. I did see another van, too, but it was much rougher

20200112_152700.thumb.jpg.ded75998d855c7c8964efebda2047a66.jpg

Lovely CX 2.5 Turbot in 'that colour' with the window Louvre etc. Lovely.

20200114_140031.thumb.jpg.575dfb6c8f7ca39ac4e290ebca092a90.jpg

Most vans are fully decorated by the region's amateur street artists

20200114_173242.thumb.jpg.3d0a545bcc33f791211e3fa6d270d975.jpg

This is becoming unwieldy on my phone. More in a sec...

See, hilarious. I did say 'Men on the internet will be looking at that later' but it didn't make any difference

20200116_212259.thumb.jpg.a51b640690bc87b03d78205432c9f782.jpg

A shit photo,  but this Merc hearse was mega. I also saw, but to my eternal regret could not capture, a BEDFORD MIDI HEARSE which might just be the most shite vehicle ever built

20200116_223939.thumb.jpg.1d12d4df81e049a45efbc4bf6070b563.jpg

404 pick-up advertising a shop just outside my digs in Porto (v nice city, would go again)

20200117_110123.thumb.jpg.1b71824af0075eb694d4c679c4b14066.jpg

Lovely old BMW is exactly the sort of thing I would ignore in the UK, but this looked so 'right' in that colour and on those steelies

20200117_114039.thumb.jpg.1c447705528c7d3dace04ff1cd7bd9f8.jpg

another 'still working' Transit. This was the only proper Mk3 I saw, but I'm pleased to report lots of Portuguese Transits have the pointless single 'hatchback' door thing that I love

20200117_120222.thumb.jpg.cbe60051703f8f942a72103aefb6b322.jpg

A  very typical street scene. The Panda was more loved than most with fancy alloys etc

20200117_131230.thumb.jpg.787aa5ac45922412b189f83db79bc1d3.jpg

An Sierra

20200117_131608.thumb.jpg.9cf2293d08e68acb18f32c13870a4ed0.jpg

More bilge. Particularly scenic images here. What a beautiful country.

20200117_131837.thumb.jpg.d7e71c98ca97ce2eeed42a3e71c05c09.jpg

20200117_141020.thumb.jpg.9bd9bcc099e9debd4d6f04278c7e9f1e.jpg

Never seen a Clio van before so I was quite excited about this!

20200117_153149.thumb.jpg.97f8eceab0ef44202d612dc902c3b113.jpg

An odd Toyota truck thing. A few similar such vehicles were seen, of indeterminate age and model

20200117_161830.thumb.jpg.7989ceeb86b1e61c2a949524c14f1b16.jpg

There was a smattering of Cavaliers, mostly booted

20200117_161932.thumb.jpg.b0e4b172bd93ea9f4b6dbdac0369e7b1.jpg

An proper cla**ic. Nice.

20200117_162255.thumb.jpg.e175b5af252c4e5ed2b67d6fcc4511ee.jpg

Nocturnal 305. I really like the look of these

20200117_180357.thumb.jpg.204f9bca18b0412b89f81ba234cd80d5.jpg

Ending on a high note. I went to a bar on the top floor of an Art Déco car park (a sort of bougie European take on Trinity Square, if you will) and took the stairs back down to see what I could find.

20200117_233946.thumb.jpg.3bd686335637bdb734be75ab89aca345.jpg

yum! Let's have a closer look...

20200117_233954.thumb.jpg.4b6eb74cb45d5a07b4ab83e1f29a2c55.jpg

frankly, it doesn't get much better than a beige Simca 1100 estate, does it?

Something in the back of my mind makes me think that Simca is an early one, but can't recall why - did later ones have a chrome waist-trim?

Early-ish, certainly - later ones had flatter door handles and more vent holes in the wheels.  The mudflaps look 60s rather than 70s too, but may not be original.

Lack of a chrome rubbing strip denotes poverty rather than age, I believe.

A mixed bag of start-of-year spots from around the globe*

I must have passed this rough old Saab a thousand times before but somehow never noticed it. I'll admit to suffering from slight Saab blindness though so not a huge surprise

20200202_175853.thumb.jpg.4e5d860b17da307a57ffc3ed0026ab97.jpg

Never seen this one before. Looked very tidy really, although it was missing an alloy from the other side. Am I right in thinking Robert Opron styled the dashboard in these?

20200202_175912.thumb.jpg.69d52c4b2e12631c1fbabe2657739d27.jpg

One of these. Did see an earlier one the same day but it was too dark for a photo. Still probably the most numerous of the older camper conversions but always nice to see. There's a really good CF1 I have found which I will attempt to bring you next month. Don't hold your breath

20200202_175927.thumb.jpg.7ee0562d177ce8606011ea5fef7c45c3.jpg

From Worthing to Paris, as my peripatetic lifestyle demands. In the middle of the city, sticking two fingers up to Crit Air

20200205_212346.thumb.jpg.f49fb8aef69b89d17ccb7184234a2a9e.jpg

Always nice to see one of these, and I got to tell my story about why it looks like a Panhard 24BT to an interested friend, thereby seeming more knowledgable and worldly than I actually am

20200206_095846.thumb.jpg.a10db8cc5ce89791db845af87627b9a3.jpg

I went oop north for a funeral, and found a Car I Didn't Know Existed. It's a Ssangyong, obviously

20200213_005505.thumb.jpg.7025c93c91dda1e0382ab7e38afe4d45.jpg

Piss poor photo and subject, even by my standards, but it looked immensely appealing in a sea of moderns

20200213_005616.thumb.jpg.064593f9c6537a5a11dda2a0519bebe8.jpg

Here's one I've known about for years but have never managed to snap. Well worth the wait, I think you'll agree. Placement of parked cars prevented a 'shite car and house' full reveal, but suffice to say its the only building on this small road of nice houses in a well-to-do area of West London with peeling paint on the windows and brambles overtaking the garden. It's an intriguing 'what's in the garage?', too, as there is a lean-to behind the gate and behind that a large, rusting corrugated iron garage that could probably hold three old cars. Hopefully somebody will be there at the right moment to document it when the inevitable happens

20200210_115354.thumb.jpg.aea4ffb7bba3a1a54a2dcc468a434b37.jpg

A similarly picturesque view from the opposite end of the city

20200215_195728.thumb.jpg.f90b940b20b6c038c08bdd46a0a2fdeb.jpg

My spot of the month has to go to this one, however. You can see my hands shaking with barely contained excitement here and slightly blurring the image. What an absolute babe

20200215_155501.thumb.jpg.ae6751b8de89f2e05ad1025c2c0dd22c.jpg

Let's have another look? I'm glad to see the owner of this has received the memo about it being illegal to operate one without two large roof bars fitted at all times. Those steel wheels are deeply sexy. didn't even look too bad under all the grim. Lovely.

20200215_155509.thumb.jpg.b7d521cc79cd63f7bbdf4330386409b0.jpg

That's it for now. Join me again for another instalment of The Wandering Barrett next time!

Just because there's nothing else to do, here is a very crappy selection of everything I've seen recently. Predictably my phone died just before lockdown and I've not investigated getting it replaced yet, so I'm back to my shitty old potatocam version for the time being. Also I've not really been off on dedicated spotting trips or owt, just what I can find on my 'daily excercise' which has included a few massive sub-urban walks in South London. Still, nothing really to report except:

This flippin' thing! this one wasn't on 'the list' of UK Corvairs so I assume its a fairly recent import. not 100 per cent on the wheels (are they Trans am or summat?) but otherwise looks bang-on. These 2nd gen cars really are among the best looking things ever to come out of America (and the best-handling, despite what people say). Glorious.

20200321_141224.thumb.jpg.fd593d0fab10e7f727de3266adde2a26.jpg20200321_141212.thumb.jpg.59147025a20479484733df98e0bcb2ad.jpg

This was seen the same day, and snapped mainly for the benefit of @bramz7. It's so rare to see a low-spec one in proper farmer spec (this was on a proper farm, during an unsuccessful mission to find organic eggs)

20200321_142539.thumb.jpg.19979b206c0a4e2d4d5f1c82f071f003.jpg

I did a circular through the green chain path the other day, which was mostly in woods and shit obviously, but there was a bit of urban stuff too. This one is just a dull modern car, but interesting because it's seemingly just been abandoned to fester, despite being significantly newer than any car I've owned

20200414_102252.thumb.jpg.3c091f7c64462998f8fd1a3eb320fb90.jpg

Again, the subject is too new to be of interest but i liked the whole mise en scene and it's a contender for shite house/cars

20200414_105359.thumb.jpg.c3f9cb438cd7cbb87ab6248a4ef19871.jpg

I actually liked this house. This is the oldest thing I've seen for ages, disappointingly. I have a load of things I want to go and photograph but no justification to travel at the mo (and I'd like to wait until I have a better camer again) so this is as good as it gets right now. Soz!

Forgive me, chumps, for I have sinned. I posted a picture of a modern car because I felt like I had nothing to offer the spotting gods in this time of paucity. Well, GUESS WHAT? I'm fuggin' atoning right now, mofos.

Okay, this one isn't that visually stimulating, but believe it or not this is a Trojan/Heinkel bubble car just sat in somebody's front garden under a tarp. Not quite as impressive as that scruffy Messerschmitt that's somewhere in London, but still quite heartwarming that stuff like this still exists.

20200418_130356.thumb.jpg.b5730cee187491043caa634d890bc7ac.jpg

This is a bit more like it. A lovely* old Avenger wagon. Must be a fairly early survivor on a 1972 reg. Despite appearances, there is a Smart car behind it and the only access to this garden is the drive on which the Avenger is parked, so perhaps it's not been sat here as long as it looks. Off the road since 1998 though, so who knows. Remember when @Mr_Bo11ox pulled one of these out of a field and spent a day manually swapping a load of tyres over so he could a-frame it home? That's one of my all-time favourite shite-saving stories.

20200418_133302-1.thumb.jpg.07c9f0f46f587870140c03aebc9c5d49.jpg

Local people may well recognise this old heap, which has been parked in this front garden on a main road for flippin' years. Normally this is a mega-busy route with no chance of pulling over for a photograph, but thanks to the GLOBAL PANDEMIC there was virtually no traffic there on Saturday so I nipped in for a shot!

20200418_133928-1.thumb.jpg.f8c1552c9a4f5cab0b4d2c0f8bfd3c95.jpg

And hey, if you do recognise the Cav, did you know this is in the back garden of the same house? I love how the cover sill has just fallen off and is now a depositary for a load of moss (I love moss)

20200418_133910-1.thumb.jpg.c0eda373bee912ce5775a2d5a2896240.jpg

Less exciting, and in a really nice part of Town, but this looked 'just right' on the cobbles etc, and I do really like these. Could be a still from an episode of The Sweeney, perhaps

20200418_135914.thumb.jpg.837829f526ee70ef815efb087cab6fd9.jpg

This old 'nut was down the bottom of the same road, looking rather sorry for itself. I do love seeing 1950s stuff street-parked and obviously more or less perma-static. Imagine the rigmarole invovled if you just wanted to pop to the shops in this or whatever. Get the compressor out, pump up the tyres, find the easy start, peg the choke out (you just know a peg is involved), get some jump leads or a jump pack or whatever. By the time you've got it idling the shops'll all be shut anyway.

20200418_140247.thumb.jpg.e43ad8ad9728e6daf2ddf4071a855c2e.jpg

Anyway, how about THIS THING? Not sure I've ever seen a Lada like this in the wild before (since I started taking photos of cars) but a glance through this thread will probably reveal if I'm talking out of my arse or not here. Whatever, off the road since 2012 but looks like it would probably fire right up and get you to Glasgow and back with no bother. Headlamp wipers, too, for those of you that care

20200420_110830.thumb.jpg.73e4c1a3444f128135c107c48636fa45.jpg

Well, that's actually it now. There will hopefully be more despite the current restrictions, which tbh I am fully ignoring and just treating the world like my own private playground atm (unless you consider dropping off jars of kimchi to people and buying cinamon buns to be 'essential')
