Brilliant, that's a PROPER collection story with trains, petrol station, re-gapping the points at Asda, stripping the carbs on the motorway in the dark and fattening but out-of-date foodstuffs.  Genius.

Bloody lovely car, too.  That must be quite early for a big bumper one?

a bearded gentleman holding up an X1/9 Haynes manual.... After a short drive in his Daihatsu Charade, we parked behind his Scimitar  and looked over the X1/9.

Which Autoshiter is he then?  And if not, why not???????????

Excellent collection thread, epic.  We really should assemble these into a book.  It's not like we're short of material, is it?

*update*

Had a couple of days fettling now, and it's a good un. 4 metal hubcaps under the "bonnet" battery cover found and uncracked, even with the original plastic nuts..engine is running sweet now with no hot starting issues, given a good clean, polish and a long hard staring. few bits of bodywork to do, steering rack bush (which explains the "crack" over bumps) and a new lollipop, which was also under the bonnet... Still can't quite believe how original, and together it is, especially having only cost a weeks wages.

Being a mid engine thing the gearbox is behind the gearlever. To cope with this oddity, fiat or bertone engineered a bit of a linkage with two circular spoons sandwiching a bit of rubber, aka the lollipop.tr001_lrg.jpg

And if you lose 5th and reverse, drill a big hole through and put a nut and bolt in it!

lotsa Fiats have" lollipopswithnuts", - old-style real Fiat 500's,-  my 900e also has one,

usually complete with factory warning sign saying -  "WARNING, may contain lollipops with nuts"

Thanks - every day's a school day.  That now makes complete sense, in a 1970s Fiat sort of way.

  • 4 weeks later...

Work is progressing well, a few bits of welding (with 1979 technology oxy acetalyne of course) have been done- passengers door bottom was rotten and the window held up with wood.... Door has been off, welded and ready for paint, window winder cable on its way from Italy. Mechanically itsspot on, comedy headlights though, as they sometimes take a fit and just pop up and down at random. Much fibreglass and filler dust has been distributed around the workshop after hours. Final shaping and priming to come but as it's having to sit outside during the day I've been throwing any old paint on it between rub downs.
