VWPowered
A rare 'Sport' model was produced from 1983 in order to homologate for the sub 1300cc class of group A rallying for the British Championship. These sport models had SR suspension, SR engine with twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors, a bespoke camshaft, close ratio GTE gearbox and few luxurys. This gave 93hp and a top speed of 112mph (180 km/h) with a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds These are far the rarest models (500 produced) and thus aquire a high market price if one does become avalible. I was talking to my Dad about these the other day. He'd bought Classic & Sportscar Magazine which had an article on the Peugeot 205,it mentioned the 205 Rallye which was similar in concept to these Novas,-stripped out, twin Webers etc.It also reminded me of my Dad's old Talbot Sunbeam T.I. which I used to drive a lot
Spottedlaurel
Nice alloys on the Bluebird, they’d suit mine perfectly and be 276% more attractive than its current OE wheeltrims. Think that style may have been offered as a dealer-fit accessory.

mk2_craig
Thanks for the Nova info, on reflection I wouldn't have thought Vaux knocked them out with a sunroof although it's not out of the question that a previous owner had an aftermarket job boshed on. A friend who knows about these things has just e-mailed me to suggest that this particular example may not be quite what it seems and is probably a replica, or possibly a genuine Sport re-shelled. I suspect many of those 500 did end up going rallying sooner or later?

mk2_craig
I like the idea of sporting celebs out of their depth in a different discipline, it'd be a bit like Colin McRae suffering a busted jaw during a charity punch-up with Naseem Hamed or something. Spent half a day in Guernsey back in August, have been meaning to go back over for a weekend's shitespotting but never managed it yet and now the weather's getting crap so no longer GR8 for biking around searching 4 tat. I know where two are garaged in Jersey , but I've never photographed a mk1 XR2 on the road - and what do I see down at the harbour just as I'm leaving! These things were EVERYWHERE! I guess Guernsey has a pretty lax attitude to grey imports with no SVA or what have you, probably no inspection at all actually. Hadn't been off the boat 2 mins when I saw this... ...and this... ...and this! Visited the main local bus and coach firm - partly business, partly pleasure. Guernsey has similar vehicle dimension restrictions to Jersey on account of the narrow roads and some of their more interesting stuff is above: in the middle is definitely a Roadrunner-based Leyland Swift similar to some posted here on Jersey, to the left is what I thought was another Swift but is in fact a Terrier-based Cub dating from 1988, and to the right is some bizarre thing based on a Renault truck with a body constructed by Leicester Carriage Builders. The Optare Metrorider on the left was bought new mid-1990s, now out of use because the regular driver had retired apparently! On the right is a Northern-Ireland built Cannon, bodied by the above Leicester firm to a slightly more modern design, another vehicle type also working on Jersey (see earlier in this thread for a rear view) I thought this was another Renault, but it turns out to be a Iveco chassis with Portuguese coachwork - surely based on the 1990s Cargo this however is a Renault, again I've shown one of these in the livery of Jersey's main coach outfit before. Looks to be quite an attractive small coach although not a patch on full size UK vehicles. Some strange regulations, possibly an attempt to deal with abandoned vehicles which is seemingly at risk of approaching epidemic proportions. I saw (but didn't manage to photo) a lot of dead stuff in fields and driveways, but nothing in public places Except, remarkably, this tired looking Bristol VRT which I really wasn't expecting to see! Must have been given some sort of exemption from the size limits My bike on the beach... not quite shite yet. What's that? Come back! Transit was heading back to the Continent that evening. Saw this little honey just as I was leaving. Made my day

mk2_craig
Back in Jersey: Not one Not two But three mk2 Cavaliers (this last one is a low mileage sweetie) A Mehari, thought this was the only roadworthy one over here but there's definitely another the same colour in circulation, and possibly others too Mini Clubman, surprising numbers of these still existing Pick-up (has now been registered locally I think) Nice low-spec Escort Belmont is rare now Very tidy 305 More beigeness and more Pugness Something Stateside This thing woke me up one morning squeezing down the side of our house, required about a zillion point turn to get out again. Cab roof royally screwed. Talking of f**ked trucks Alfa looked well-kept Earlier mk2 XR2, 6bhp better than the '86-on lean burn jobs apparently. EDITED to correct photo sizes
Spottedlaurel
99/100 for the three main versions of the Cavalier. Shame you couldn't also get a 2dr (wonder if any are left in the UK?) and a convertible.
mk2_craig
I don't recall EVER having seen a 2-door saloon in the metal ANYWHERE. I'm sure there will be a mk2 droptop lurking in Jersey somewhere though - still a fair few Astra convertibles around. However I have found examples of the previous generation! There is a nice pic of the bronze cabriolet alongside a late mk2 LX 5-door on page 11 of this thread, though inexplicably I appear to have deleted the original sadly. For good measure. AnthonyG
There seems to be a lot of 80s stuff in Jersey that you just don't see in the UK anymore. Do cars last longer there? Is it that the annual mileage is low because of the size of the island? Do they put salt on the roads in the winter?

Is it that the annual mileage is low because of the size of the island? Do they put salt on the roads in the winter? No snow [not for ages, anyway] =no salt. Anything parked near the coast doesn't last long, though. Main reason for survival rate of shite is the lack of an annual MOT test [praise the Lord] for private vehicles, although some commercials are tested annualy. Annual mileage is low, butwera and tear on clutches/gearboxes is more, and you do find some really low mileage stuff with completely shagged engines, [lots of very short journeys]
r.welfare
LOL yes, all of this is true, plus the inevitable square wheels that result from a lifetime of bumping up and down kerbs at speed to avoid the buses...Two cases in point were the cars I bought while I was in Guernsey - 15 year old Jetta with 51,000 miles on the clock (still on original cambelt with very little life in it...eek!) which was surprisingly rust-free given it had lived it's life by the coast (not unusual to see late Volvo 340s with fist-sized holes in the A-pillars, for example); then traded in for a 4-year old Honda Accord at the local Honda dealer, being sold cheap because it had "high miles"...17,000!!!Also most stuff (in Guernsey anyway) Focus-sized or bigger pretty much has an autobox, because of the amount of town driving. No test as noted, but around this time every year the local Force begin their roadside checks (Xmas parties = much drunk driving), where they will check your tax disc, lights, tyres etc.
mk2_craig
Yep, I'd agree that the average car lives a couple of years longer over here. That's not to deny that some stuff has a very short life indeed, I get the impression people are probably less inclined to rectify a major fault on a six to ten year old car than in the UK. This Accord hatch is the perfect example of 80s bilge that's survived through an easy life. As is this Golf coupe Strangely I haven't actually seen a Maestro hatch for a long time, but a number of vans still milling around, this one especially clean. 5 series minus chrome All now getting to be rare sights. For its colour scheme Rare when new, rarer now Sub-100cc shite At least two of these resident here. Were these ever built in RHD? Badging suggests this an older example You thought I'd tracked down all the Cargos on the island? WRONG Used the cameraphone for this one, makes the paint look worse than it is. But still pretty faded

mk2_craig
Nice old Rover, just visiting perhaps? Horrible old Mini Decaying old replica vintage commercial Just to show there's no bias towards old Ford trucks here Old motorcycle, are those Dutch plates? Mentor automatic saloon, 40k-odd on the clock. Made £110 at auction Loads of Rover 100s and mid 90s Polos laid up here, for some reason I don't remember a Metrocab on the rank, but at least two used as private transport (in this case a nursing home) Montego, no saloons seen since my return here in July 2007 but this estate identical to another earlier in the thread This early R9 auto has 26k on the clock and you could own it! Dave the seller is seeking "Offers". Will gladly put prospective purchasers in touch Have I posted one of these yet? I have now All the hallmarks of a one-elderly-owner car, I forgot to check if it was HONDAMATIC or not Modern shite, I can only guess that heated rear windows were an option, standard equipment being perspex sealed in with gaffa tape Despite the (mismatching) mk2 Fiesta front seats, I can confirm that this beauty was in extremely nice nick Grey day, grey car
VWPowered
nice spots as always chap, now for some reason i got a real urge to get rid of our nevada and buy a TD Montego Estate, dunno why... did they do a vanden plas in estate form sure they did not sure about a diesel one though... ahhh leather... Split_Pin
Think I must be looking the wrong place for cheap transport. I was looking as MK3 Astras, but even ones with short MOT and biblical mileages go for double this. Unless its got a major hidden fault, £110 for that is outstanding value for money imo. I also like your friends 9, box-ticking early model and i love the wheeltrims - they look original- is that right?

Mash
That business with the rear windows is really bizarre! "To have bought one Atoz may be deemed unfortunate, to have bought two seems positively careless..." Guest
To be fair on the Atoz I think they're easily the best of a bad bunch, they drive quite nice too. When they're a worthless obscurity (soon) I'll have one in the fleet I think.
