A hugely modified sapphire cosworth I could feel myself being lifted out of the seat under hard acceleration, an aeriel atom, my old kawasaki green rs turbo it was very modified ran 28psi of boost and showed BMW m5s it's tail lights. I took my mates mrs for a spin in it and she curled up almost crying on the passenger's seat because it scared her that much, The thing blew up in the end though

Cars would probably be a 600hp Nissan Skyline, I've also ridden a turbo Hayabusa on low boost (280hp) which made the skyline feel a bit pedestrian.

My old BMW 330ci M-Sport - A very fast machine but never really got to use it properly i.e. take it to an Autobahn. Doing the 70mph limit over here in the UK was a like a slow Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for it, once or twice I pushed it but only very briefly as it would of resulted in a ban.

Obviously the 217 empty packs of 20 B&H scattered around the dash and footwells were an option plus the copy's of 80s Razzle behind the seats.

 

And the cement mixer precariously stuffed in the back was there to keep the thing from taking off.

Fastest car I've driven was between my old Senator 3.0 24v and the 850 T-5 which was frighteningly fast off the line.

I've never driven anything really, properly fast but the quickest is either my T5 or the Saab (16v turbo with some light tweaks).

 

It's all about the acceleration for me, I don't care about top speed.

Polo G40 running 130bhp or so in a 780kg car. 0-60 was just under 7sec and in-gear acceleration was mental. Pull alongside any saloon short of a Cosworth or M5 on the motorway and you could make them look a bit silly.... However that was the same gearing that meant it was buzzing its tits off at 115mph.

 

I took my mate to buy a Clio 182 in it, paid £15k new, and he couldn't catch me on the way back.

I drove my dad's hotrod and before that his Cobra replica, both had tuned up Rover V8s and the acceleration was about the same in both. I took the hotrod up to 155 once, uh, while abroad, which was pretty ludicrous. I also drove a new Z28 Camaro back in the late 1990's, but I didn't think it was very fast and certainly didn't feel very fast. For feeling fast, nothing has ever felt faster than my Pop at 80mph. Stock sit-up-and-beg Ford Pop with a ridiculously tuned up sidevalve on its standard 3-speed box and I managed to squeeze 80mph out of it on the M25. Standard top speed was an alleged 60mph, but it barely got there. Jimclit mentioned the tops of the doors peeling out on the 2CV, well this felt like it was about to take to the sky and the noise coming from the engine at 6000-something rpm was terrifying. I dread to think what sort of punishment the inside of that poor little engine was taking. If you ever see a Pop sidevalve crank you'll know what I mean

First car I ever drove, at about 15 and a half, was a family friend's Sunbeam Tiger. Red/black hood like this one:

 

 

I kangarooed it down a private road for about 200m in first gear. I didn't really know how to drive at the time, and I was shitting myself because the owner had just spent about 7K on a full restoration. I know it was fast because he'd just taken me out for a spin in it. Pulled out of his road spinning the wheels in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, then got it up to 125+ mph on the bit of A3 just before the Robin Hood roundabout. 2nd car I drove was about 10 mins later, his Talbot Horizon, 'for comparison'. Less memorable, can't even remember what colour that was, so let's say beige.

 

Fastest car 'owned' was my wife's company Rover 200vi. This colour blue but 5 doors. Rover made some superb cars in the 90's and I reckon this was the pick of the bunch.

Mrs did a lot of miles at that time so we only had it about a year. Probably just as well because it made me be very naughty. I liked it because it was nice and discreet, like a normal economical shopping hatchback, until you decided to hoof it at 4000rpm instead of change up. I was good friends with the red line.

See new, mine doesn't feel that "fast" off the line with it being an auto.its only when you look down and see 90ish coming up rather quickly that you appreciate how it gathers speed.

Rather like pushing a huge mossy green brick off a tower block, only to spot you are doing X mph just before you smack into something...

SL55 was pretty bloody quick and sounded EPIC! But, it was all just to easy and sanitised, very aware of being pushed back in the seat and things happening fast, but no effort on the drivers part other than to just prod the loud pedal.

 

Porsche 928 S4GT manual. Now that felt more like it, horrible gearbox until you started to'press on' when it came alive and changes became quick and easy, sounded good with an Ansa exhaust, but the car itself was so capable it didn't come alive until you were well into licence losing territory.

 

The quickest accelerating (so it felt) was a MK2 3.0 litre Capri into which had been plonked a 351ci Ford lump. Outside it looked stock, but under the bonnet it was rather different - an absolutely beautiful job done by a proper engineer (not me!). It had a huge Holley 4 barrel and a lumpy cam and Iskendrian (sp?) bits galore. No idea what the gearbox was other than it had 4 speeds (manual) and was seriously undergeared as it maxed out at about 125 - 130. It was just insanely fast off the line and the sheer drama of the thing was totally addictive, as was the noise and as it looked so normal, everyone looked to see where the noise was coming from. It had loads of electronics in it as well, rev limiters and shift warning lights and beepers (and this was back in the 80's) and it was just....

 

Chap traded it in on a bloody MG 'B' GT!

The fastest cars I've owned are a 4.2v8 Audi a8 and the v8 Xjr . The a8 was rapid but the Xjr was on a different stratosphere although the Xjr was a but too wallowy for fast a road driving and the any hotish hatch could have smoked it on the corners. Also you really need a manual box. I still dream if owning an e39 m5 but given my recent history with bmw's it's probably bit wise.

I drove my mates' sapphire cosworth - it was chipped to about 270 hp.

 

Also drove a rally spec escort cosworth. Jensen interceptor was no slouch but not as quick as the ford's.

 

However after owning my busa it makes 99.9 % of cars seem flat. I cannot go around bends as quick as an imprezza or evo but on straight roads there is no quicker way of covering ground.

I still like the SL55 because in spite of its power the car felt like a complete package stable and easy to drive even at speed. You could lend it to your granny to do her shopping in and she wouldn’t get into trouble.

 

Now if you want a challenge I used to borrow an MK2 Astra 16v Red Top, quick car but the engine overwhelmed the chassis and you had to watch out!

I forgot. I once drove a 440bhp Lola T70 replica. In December. That was exciting and neatly demonstrated the utter futility of driving anything on public roads with more than about 100bhp.

There's a difference between the fastest car I've ever driven, which would be a toss up between a couple of big German saloons. (Is an E39 540 quicker than a Merc CLS500?), and the fastest I've ever driven.
Didn't drive either of those anywhere near their (allegedly limited) top speeds of 155, but I got closer to that speed than I dare to admit to in print in my old E34 530i when I planted my foot on the floor and held it there to see how fast it would go on a deserted stretch of 'private road'.

Back in the days before speed cameras there were a few roads I used to drive at three figure speeds, if the car would take it. Regularly used to do Glasgow to London in under 5 hours.

The fastest I've been , was as pillion on Pa's Blade. I've no idea how fast, but he started overtaking cars at 70ish, and they started going backwards very quickly.

I was tempted to get the bus home, but channelled my inner Ma instead, and told him exactly what I thought of that.

I'll have a bike someday, but it'll be something much more modest.

FF2000s can fucking get a shift on. Drove one myself many years ago, decided that I wasn't brave enough, and stuck to the FF1600 Van Diemen.

 

I think probably the fastest road car I ever drove was my ex's A-M Vanquish. Stupidly fast, stupidly heavy car. Glorious, though.

 

 

It was a sort of track day thing at Goodwood. The last trip was as a passenger in a 1.4 K-series engine Caterham. I don't think I could put into mere words how quick that thing was, but it was quicker round corners than I'd dare to go on a straight. The C20XE engined ones must have been absolutely fucking mental.
