Musso musings..

Hi Shitters.

Ive noticed these seem to be beyond shite now and command a very low price thanks to their dismal popularity .

The late models seem to be fully loaded with fake wood and leather and look pretty pleasant, best of all they're veg friendly.

I seem to remember many had gearbox problems and ended up scrapped due to lack of spares.

does anybody here have any experience with these beasts? Surely the Tata Safari must be worse.. I even like the odd styling.

Are post Y reg ones on mega road tax?

I know two people who have fallen for these things, both of them lost a whole hill of money on them, and one would regularly turn up in his far more reliable Lotus Excel, which says it all.

Guess if you find one that goes for a couple of hundred quid fair enough, but I've heard nothing good about them.
I guess that makes them prime autoshite though.....

Hang on so these were built by Ssangyong and Daewoo? That's confusing.

Posted

So someone bought the Ssangyong brand back from Daewoo when they went tits up?

Posted

Daewoo sold it. Now SAIC has a 51% stake - the Chinese company that ended up with bits of Rover too.

Posted

Mates bought 2 of these but only to rape them of the 2.9 turblow Merc based engines  he runs in a 61 Landrover which gives him veg friendly fun for buttons .

They sound quite dreadful but then as Petrolblog mentioned they are really old technology so perhaps its unfair to expect them to be any good. Do they compare well to similar cars of the time like the Toyota Hilux Surf or Mitsubishi Shogun?

Posted

Hilux Surfs would have better cooling capabilities if they were fitted with a 1.8 K series.

I have one. 3.2 litre petrol (merc engine)

I've had it about 3 years- see no need to change it.

I don't use it often -(18 mpg) but it tows really well -has hardly cost me a penny, always passes the MOT with minimal (read no) maintenance.

it always starts, drives without issue.

Its boring, bland, expensive to run -but a damn good towcar.

A lass I used to work with got a Ssangyong Korrando for herself because she liked her husbands Musso so much.  In fairness her previous cars were a Corsa B diesel and a Nissan Serena diesel so more or less anything would be an improvement.

Always had the horn for a Musso. I will probably buy the Gx220, but if a black one turns up I guess id buy it whatever the engine. Then it would be polished to within an inch of its life!

Posted

There's a couple of black ones on ebay now!

They appear to be a bit small inside, maybe only a 4 seater.

Musso translates as 'Rhinoceros'. It's a lot of metal for £5-600.

Here is one I saw last week by the seaside but as usual I have nothing constructive to add to the conversation:

Doesn't Nigel Bickle have one of these? Someone else had one too for towing duties.

I may be having a mental memory episode, but I think when Autocar tested the petrol Musso in 96/7 it was the fastest 4x4 they'd ever tested.

Reading that it looks unlikely , but there was something memorable about it, maybe the worst or thirstiest?

I had a mk1 diesel. Brilliant car. Well designed veg burner 300tdi merc engine

They were also the beginning of the end of Ken Greenley's credibility , coming from his pen between;

I think that's right. The GX220 ones with the 3.2 engine went very well indeed.

Greenley said he designed it with the preferences of Korean policians and businessmen in mind. I find a lot of cars designed for the Eastern eye bloody ugly.

Posted

Funnily enough there's was a kirandong sitting outside my lockup yesterday that looked like it had been sitting in a chicken coupe for 10 years.

Posted

I think they are quite good looking by 4x4 standards. I've a vague recollection of them being designed on the assumption that nobody would see the bottom half.

I think these things are quite a sharp looker. Theres one at my work thats had BMW e36 headlights and grille grafted in, presumably after a low speed bump that would have cost £8000 to repair with dealer parts.

Pics needed, sounds an improvement possibly.

I'll get a pic next time I see it, it does look half decent but the two 'kidneys' are slightly further apart than they should be so it looks a bit odd!!!
