Probably very few and even fewer - but it shows what was wrong with the Mini.

If you wanted more boot I suppose you bought the 1100 or a bit later a Renault 5.

Here is Donald Stokes in 1969. What a job he took on...

And in 1972

Yes indeed, it was certainly a poison chalice he got.

Some of Stokes decisions were certainly questionable & pushing the Maxi into production when it wasn't near ready & not really "getting" sportiness in cars are clearly two of them.

Main person I blame is always Issigonis, BMC took what he said as gospel for far too long & whilst advanced engineering was great it was expensive & didn't allow for changes to update looks etc, plus it gave the market cars like the 1800 which he liked but just wasn't sexy  or sporty looking like a Cortina... Ford were far less advanced but kept re-skinning/ updating cars to keep them fresh. The mini soldiered on too long not making a profit & the 1100/1300 whilst incredibly popular were also old by the end.

Couple that with launching underdeveloped cars like the Allegro & Marina (both of which I really like but they weren't great initially) a militant Union side, plus a workforce that often seemed not to want to build cars well & you don't have a job i'd have wanted !

Such a shame.

DV4 dustcart at Dollman Street Birmingham

"Electricars DV4 EOJ 965 entered service with Birmingham Corporation 28th February 1939, and was last recorded in the maintenance ledger in 1969."

The council got their money's worth out of it then!  Already at least 20 years old in the picture, judging by the A55 Farina in the background.

Yes, it seems to be this accident:

Quote

18th December 1981 - Twyford

Collision involving Class 117

Class 117 set L423 led by 51403 on the 23:13 Henley - Twyfordran through the buffers at Twyford after a brake failure. It demolished the bufferstops at the end of the bay platform and landed partly in the station approach on top of a parked car. The scene was attended to the next day by the Old Oak Common breakdown train which rerailed the unit. 51403 would be withdrawn.

Pugh, Pugh, Barney, McGrew, Dibble.

But where are Cuthbert and Grubb?

'Oh dear. Have they been squashed flat as a pancake?'.

(Brian Cant will have to change the familiar announcements. Won't be quite the same, and everyone's going to notice the 2 missing names.. Cuthbert and Grubb were such fine actors too. A tragic loss).

Meanwhile, as the Trumpton clock ticks (never too slowly, never too quickly), Chippy Minton's carpenter's workshop has burned to the ground.

'Fuck' said Chippy Minton.
