martc
Photographed in September 1932 by Harold Tomlin for the Daily Herald, this Bugatti is being filled with milk petrol in preparation for the 500 mile race at Brooklands. It will be driven by Count Stanislas Czaykowski, the only foreign competitor and a big fan of milkshakes. B.M.W. ceased importing the saloon after 1965, although imports of the coupé continued for a few more years. The Consumers' Association described it as "an amazingly quick car, with superb handling, but with an expensive servicing schedule, a poor heater and a truly appalling wiper pattern." I have watched and recommend the film Kongens nei (The King's Choice). Mainly about the choices made by the King and the government it does show just how ill-prepared the country was to the threat. They really thought Hitler would keep his word and not attack the country.

I am quite familiar with everything that unfolded in April 1940 and was several things but mostly that Norway is then as now as incompetent as it is possible to become. They were told early on that German warships were heading north and they did little. They also had a mobilization order for the army but it was sent out too late and by mail. There is a good TV series called Allied and Alone (Alliert og alene) that covers the invasion from those who were to defend the country and it gives me chills I really feel sorry for the poor people who were in this.
