Not sure he did, the screen aperture and roofline look pretty good, and with the damage to the door I'd say it got overtaken by the rest of the car.

Think someone put it on the bonnet afterwards.

Not good tho, I agree

Yeah, could be, I thought that was the tyre in the bulkhead, but its just torn the bulkhead off the A-pillar inner.. Not nice! I wonder if he was wearing the seatbelt.. I hope for his sake he was, not that it would have helped his feet, ankles & knees.

This is the BL effort - the Lynx. Was to use the Rover V8.

Which has an interesting similarity to the first generation Honda Accord Coupe.

Micheal Edwardes canned the Lynx when it was at late stage of development - the prototype is at Gaydon.

But he did join Honda for the Triump Acclaim. Maybe there was some crossover with Lynx - who knows.

I don't think Honda was influenced in design by BL Have driven them, lovely cars in manuel or Hondamatic flavour

Anyone know why cars and vans of this era rusted so badly ?

Cheap poor quality sheet metal + design 'faults' (built in water/mud 'traps'), lack of rust proofing ...

Bodies 'in white' came from the pressing shops without any finish in many cases - so corrosion set in even before priming - especially Midlands built cars where bodies were shipped to be finished elsewhere.

Lots of cavities with no or very little paint on them.

Paint technology was cheaped in the 60's too.

This is Rootes' main Ryton-on Dunsmoor works in 1967. The bodies being dipped would have come down from  their body suppliers Pressed Steel in Coventry - there was no body stamping at Ryton - they get a fairly rapid dunking in primer and then all the faces get a proper finish - but all the cavities and hidden parts probably got very little paint.

Cars were only designed to last 10 years and 100,000 miles.

There was a lot more salt on the roads in the past too.

British 1950's cars used to last better because they were chassis built - but once unibodies came in and metal gauge was thinned to save weigh and money - the rot really set in.

The working conditions look horrendous by the way. Imagine doing that all day - very little protection too.

Rootes was a very undercapitalised business - so processes were crude and labour intensive. Doing everything by hand made painting very hit-and-miss.

The past as they say is another country.

Look under the wheel arches of most pre 90s cars and notice that none had any form of liners. Even the backs of headlights are exposed. The vacuum formed wheel arch liner is one huge improvement.

Another is vastly improved seam sealer and flexible paints, combined with wax in box sections. Up to 1980, Golfs were absolute festering rust buckets. That year, VW started using these things, and overnight Golfs became very rust resistant.

Modern steels tend to resist corrosion more. If a Peugeot or Citroen gets a paint chip for example, the exposed metal often stays grey for years, never turning rust brown.

I was going to say that is one of about 8 4-door Lotus Cortinas built for police use. According to the web site linked they used 1600E shells and at least two survive that were used by the Mid-Anglia Constabulary.

The crashed one was one of two used by Thames Valley, the crash happening in the village of Gibraltar
