Reg's relics...as punctual as ever - a Bromley interlude!!

The following were in a single car park one Sunday in Chichester. In other words about half the cars in the car park were these interesting old ones, as there were only a handful of cars in there!

*I'm confused. According to the site I looked at yesterday, the series IIa Land Rover (with the headlights moved away from the centre) should have come in at 1961, meaning this 1967 example should be a series IIa with the headlights moved out to the edges? http://www.landrovercentre.com/history/history_land_rover.htm

 

The other thing I noticed is that I overlooked the dumped MkIII Cavalier in the car park which you can count as shite but I just forget to bother snapping them to be honest as only really early ones even catch my eye, they're still too common & therefore boring. To illustrate my point, whilst we were waiting for dad to return from the ticket machine, I noticed the navy blue M reg Cav which had a council notice on it. Then an identical L reg Cav pulled into the car park but didn't stay & drove out again. How depressing must it be to spot a car just like yours but newer which has been dumped! :| Although their time must be coming shortly because look how rare MkII Sierras of all types have become, & they were from pretty much the same period, although their life ended about 3 years earlier. Sierras overlapped the lifespan of MkII & MkIII Cavaliers & I would say that Sierras have died out nearly as much as MkII Cavs now have, with MkIII Cavs having a bit of catching up to do.

Had another course back up in London in March but this was the only spot I documented with my camera....

Other things nearby I wanted to snap but didn't dare were another Volvo 740 series saloon in one street E or F reg I think, a Volvo 240 saloon also E or F reg, a BMW E30 3 Series, also E or F reg, another bloody Nissan Figaro thing & best of all a white Toyota estate, looked like a mid 90s Carina except we never got an estate one of those, it was definitely imported from somewhere, I would guess South Africa or something. It had a name like Carina but wasn't. Trying to remember, it was something like Camida?, Carimeda....definitely started Cam...something! Wish I'd got a picture but it was in a main street & I chickened out. It was the day after I had my wallet stolen so I wasn't in the mood to draw attention to myself!

 

This was topical at the time I took the picture, just following that earthquake! Bloody mother nature eh! It's bad enough with Top Gear without you joining in! Leave it out eh!

 

Another Hillman Avenger meets it's maker! :x

I also snapped this because at the time it went with something that somebody else posted on here, it was a picture of a lorry cab balancing on a donkey cart, can't remember who posted it, might have been Chinatom or 55bloke, but it made me think of this, which I snapped but then forgot to post!

No wonder you're confused - I've been interested in Land Rovers for a long time and still have difficulty telling a II from an early IIa. The headlamps didn't move until 1968 (for 'late' IIa), so that's not much help. The deluxe bonnet with the rolled edge usually means a IIa, and Series IIs have separate Smiths wiper motors like a Series I.

You still don't get the Land Rover stuff do you?1947/8 80 inch production started with 1600 ioev.1952 went to a 2 litre.1954 changed bore centres.about the same time wheelbase increased to 86 inch for more load space.107 inch model released for greater capacity a little later.Then came the 107 station wagon, just before the 88/109 inch (2 extra inches to suit the OHV 2 litre Diesel in 1956/7.1958 Series 2 introduced (Series 1 SW stayed on until 1959 ish............)OHV 2286 petrol available in 109s only for first few months, 88 getting the 2 litre ioev) went until september 1961 and then 2a intruduced , getting the 2286 diesel and petrol. Stayed pretty much the same until about 1966 ish when the wire spoke wheel changed for the bakelite one, then all went neg earth with black dash instead of body coloured. 1967 saw the introduction of the light in wings models and shallow sills (the former to suit north american legislation) then in 1971 full line build of Series 3 went live. Major changes were plastic dash and grille, all synchro gearbox, and Salisburt rear axle on 109 models. (Was available as an option on Series 2a from approx 1967 but was standard after 1970) 109 models in 1973 got the rear mounted tank, as the Station Wagon, and then it stayed pretty much the same until about 1978/9 ish when the six cylinder ioev was ousted so the Stage 1 leaf sprung V8 could take it'splace, and that was basicall a Range Rover 109 leafer! A prototype 110 really I guess. Then 4 cylinder models were upgraded to 5 main bearing engine approx 1981 ish. Then with the coil sprung motors appearing about 1983 for the 110, and 1984 for the 90, the only main things were permanent 4WD and coil springs. Not much has changed since then, except the engine choices and fuel tankpositioning on the 90 models. Thats a quick potted history from my head. I missed stuff, but there's no room in my head right now...............

The razor edge bonnet was a standard fit all the way through until about 1981 for the 88 model, and the deluxe rolled edge was 109 and optional for the 88. Wipers were separate until approx 1967 when neg earth was the norm, then on fitting a single shrouded motor on the left hand side of the bulkhead. Noticeable by the Black dash panel. If it's body coloured, it's pos earth, separate motors.

For my 4th update today (I'm breaking them down into easier to manage chunks on the off chance that somebody may want to pass comment on something & it will be a hell of a lot easier to quote a single picture if you haven't got to weed through countless image links to find the one you want to quote / copy / paste - which is what I have sometimes found when viewing other people's spots)

 

These are from a trip to my nan's in Gloucestershire back in March...

 

Sherpa camper van has lived here for years, always meant to snap it but never got around to it until our last trip....

Incredibly, although the Trafic is 18 years old, it's still FIFTEEN years newer than the 33 year old Sherpa! :shock: Although it must be one of the oldest Sherpas about (when did they come in? 75?) whereas the Trafic is nowhere near as old as it could be, they could have been alot closer in age. When did the Trafic come in, 81? 82?

 

I thought of Pog when I took this one. This Metro van has also been at this little village garage probably since new. Been going past it for years, think it's a B reg. Anyway it used to look quite resplendent in it's yellow & red garage service van colours. Unfortunately at some point in the Metro's later years (this is also going back a few years), one or more of the wags that work there decided the Metro could do with an 'all over' makeover in.....England colours! That's the way it's been now for the past few times I've visited! :roll: Although they do still shift it around a bit as they had to clear the paint off the windscreen to manoeuvre it. I expect they just use it now as a mobile tool shed! A bit sad, not that I particularly like Metros, but it surely deserves better in it's twilight years. I can imagine a wry smile has crept over Pog's face at this one! :wink:

 

Quite chuffed that my 'drive-by' shot came out so well though, I wasn't predicting good things!

Finally, a stop at the service station on the way home and I spot this 'millionaire's car transporter', not shite at all but it was still picture worthy for the sheer amount of pricey vehicles in one place! If anything, the lorry itself was a bit shite....an old FL10!

Be nice to think they're all repo's on that transporter.That Sherpa must be super-early - if forced to suggest a reg they came out on I's have said P. First one I can properly recall was owned by a farmer, one of those funny pickups that was really just a cutdown van.

Quality spotting.The LR INFO is 100% spot on. I suggest you buy yourself one Reg, you'll soon work it out then. 'Millionaires Row' is interesting, I am tracking porka cayennes with interest. My mate had one the full on Turbo as a brand-spanka at over £70G's, four year old ones seem to be about 27-30K. At that rate of descent they will be in SHITE territory before the decade is out. The day when you can get 500bhp + 500lb/ft torque in a mud/tow beast for £500 is one to be relished.

But I thought posy German cars were solid as a rock depreciation wise?! Or is it because the Cayenne has been rated a 'dog' in the looks department so hasn't held firm as well, besides the fact it was a bit of a wild departure for Porsche & could have backfired majorly? (although I thought it had done alright for them)

Nah TG don't set out to deliberately damage anything that is valuable, German, or that Jeremy Clarkson 'likes'! :roll:

 

So Tagora yes, but not leaping those, it would have to be something old & interesting that we like on here for them to try & jump over & spectacularly mangle! :x

Two interesting sights on the way home today, infact make that three. Firstly a red / orange Datsun 120Y coupe travelling through deepest darkest Hampshire. I managed to take some pictures although I realised it's the same one I've pictured before that lives in Chichester.Once actually coming through Chichester I saw an interesting combo parked across from the VW garage; a brand new 58 plate Scirocco in metallic blue, and parked directly behind it? An E reg MkII Scirocco, not just a coincidence surely!Then a bit further up the road outside the Peugeot dealer was a black hyper ugly brand new Peugeot thing. It was sort of Doblo shaped but bigger, think it was meant to be an SUV. Anyway it was the sort of thing that I'm sure would induce sick noises on here! :wink: spent all last night transferring Malta spots from my phone, mum's phone & both cameras & started the slow process of uploading them to Photobucket so I shall shortly begin posting them up. I'll try & post them up in the order I saw them to avoid confusion (mine not yours! :lol: )

I can't read the decals on the door, but I hope they say something ironic like FIESTA POPULAR - LUXURY POWER :lol:Never seen one rotting like that at the roof/A-pillar/drip-rail junction though :shock:

The little cafe just down from our apartment in Vittoriosa had this MkI Transit as a permanent resident in the little car park. Transits of all varieties were plentiful, to the point where I began to get fussy over which ones to snap, e.g. snouted diesel MkIs were much more common than flat fronted MkIs, so I began to just look out for flat fronted ones. Facelifted MkIIs were more common than the first style MkIIs. Original MkIIs with round headlights were rarer still and all types of MkI & MkII more often than not had the larger late MkII rear lights, so I looked out for ones with the slimmer rear lights. Single rear doors weren't easy to see either.

The old cover the car in a sheet or blanket trick was quite a regular thing to see.

The other side was actually much shitier. Nothing remotely Turbo about it mind.

 

There were stray ponies in the village square. This was the first of countless Hyundai Pony's I saw during the 2 weeks, all unfortunately the same model in either it's hatchback or saloon guise.

These two were literally the other side of the Daihatsu Terios shown next to the Pony. Kia Pride & Hyundai Stella, again both were plentiful on the streets of Malta. As was the Mazda 121 the Pride is based on. Stuff like this was on every street!

Late diesel Marina in lovely primer grey. Unless I'm mistaken all of the Marinas (and Itals?) in Malta were diesels. Certainly all of the ones I got close enough to read the badge of said diesel. The Marina was another car that by a few days into the holiday I had stopped bothering to snap every example I saw because most of the remaining ones in the world must live in Malta (strangely no Allegros or Maxis, and a fair few other BL things absent as well, or I was just unlucky!)

MkI Orion. There's certainly more of those over there than I see over here in Blighty now. Strangely however, I don't recall seeing any of the restyled (MkIV Escort based) ones. The closest I got was a MkI like this which had one of the rear lamps from the restyled version, which fooled me until I saw the front with the plastic grille like this one would have had.

Early 80s Datsun Sunny coupe I think. I saw this during the 2nd week as well I swear, in Bugibba which is up the top of the island, not that it's a big island, but it was the same colour & it was also for sale. Not that that particularly nails it in Malta.....I should have checked for the hole on the offside front wing! Mind you I was on the bus when I saw the Bugibba one so a tad difficult to confirm.

Seat Cordoba MkI - definitely future shite, but snapped mainly because of the comical clashing pink sports exhaust & also to compare it with the giant propeller mounted to the side wall of the maritime museum.

Skoda Favorits play mean tricks on me, from a distance the rear makes me think "R14!!" and the front makes me think "Citroen Visa!". In Malta the Skoda Favorit is still absolutely everywhere you look so you can imagine everytime I caught sight of something I thought might have been either of the other two cars mentioned and walk back sometimes a long way to where I caught sight of it only to find "Ahh it's just another bleedin Favorit!" :roll:

Anyway despite that I don't mind them at all & felt it rude not to snap one or two as they are a bit shite themselves, in fact definitely shite, just not quite yet all that interesting. With so much choice I made sure to snap the most interesting looking ones. I only saw one Favorit pickup (minus tailgate as with alot of the pickups out there) and I didn't bother to bloody snap it! Doh! :oops:

Here's a nice early one (front badge on the left hand side, same trick which Citroen pulled with the AX & XM but right hand side) which definitely qualifies....

That'll do for the first batch, bearing in mind we're still on the first day of spots! I was taking an average of 200 pics per day, although not all on vehicles you understand, I did actually take things like people & scenery too, shock horror! :shock::lol:
