Jaguar XJ6 4.2 Sovereign for sale-Bag of sand anyone?

Hi guys.  Apologies for whoring my wares on here but I thought it might appeal to some of you.

For sale is my 1986 Jaguar Sovereign 4.2. Bought by me earlier this year from the estate of the recently deceased previous owner of 11 years. A lot of time and money has been spent by the previous owner restoring it before he passed away earlier this year, shortly after getting it on the road. The car was MOT'd and taxed in February for the first time in 11 years.  The previous MOT from July 2002 shows the car had done 115049 miles at that point. At its next MOT in January 2013 it had done 115063. It was on 115110 when I got it so it's owner barely got the chance to enjoy it. I have only done around 500 miles in it since I got it.

Sadly there is no detailed history of the restoration but you don't have to look too hard to see the work done. The car has been fully resprayed to a high standard and waxoyled underneath. New fuel pumps and changeover valve have been fitted, there is a brand new electric aerial motor(which I have not yet wired in) The autobox fluid is the correct colour and fresh as is the antifreeze. new belts have been fitted. Good quality tyres are fitted front and rear with plenty of tread.

I have all the manuals including the original PDI sheet from Harvey Hudson in Marlborough(The rear number plate is the original too) and a stamped service book up to 112786 miles. The car was serviced by the same garage from 1990 though to 2001 when it came off the road. According to the service book a new engine was fitted in 1998 at 98600 miles.

Since I got it the following work has been done.

New Oil and Filter
New Distributor cap and rotor arm
New Air filter.
The alternator has been refurbished by me with a new regulator and brushes
The interior was removed including carpets for cleaning- the floor is solid underneath
(Almost) All the electrics work! Electric windows and sunroof works, as does the climate control and the trip computer too.

Mechanically it is very good. Engine starts easily, is very quiet and shows good oil pressure. The gearbox is responsive and smooth and the brakes pull the car up very well with the handbrake working perfectly. It drives very much as it should and the ride is sublime.

There are, as always bad points.

The lacquer on the wood trim is showing its age and beginning to peel off-the wood itself is mostly in good condition though so could be saved
The headlining is coming away at the rear and would ideally need replaced.
The fuel gauges don't work-I haven't investigated this as I didn't want to know too much about the economy...
There are a couple of scratches on the body-the worst on one front wing where it appears to have been scratched whilst in storage. There is a spot of rust on the A pillar and a small bubble on the rear arch, other than that it is very good but could benefit from some detail work.

Underneath is solid but could do with being undersealed. Here is a link to more pictures including sills, jacking points etc.

This is a lovely and very usable example of this classic car that has massive potential. For sale simply as I don't have the time to enjoy and would like to see it going to a good home for the winter.

Looks very pleasant in that colour.

Sorry if I'm being blind and missed it, but where in the country are you?

Says below his Avatar, Edinburgh. However if you are on your phone etc you wont see that.

Shiters discount is of course available to the discerning folk on here.

I had a dream I was trying to bump start one of these last night but ended up rolling down the hill into someone's house, and trying to sneak away before they noticed the hole in the wall. I woke up right after, which doesn't really help your sale but I'd just though I'd share how strong they are. Maybe.

Well, this car could truly make your dreams come true.

Can't believe I actually said that. Sorry.

I'd love to buy this and waft about in it. Sadly I've probably only got about half the asking price saved, let alone the full asking. Good with the sale.

What he says. Want, want, want, want, want. Aghhhhhh!

How odd. I had a dream about a sort of Renault Megane/Alpine crossbreed thing the other night. It was in black and had those sort of swoopy doors you get on 70's Mazzers and the like, with goldy beige velour seats and part wood steering wheel. It also had those funny instrument binnacles you got in old Alfas...I woke up wanting it!

I'll join the list of people who would love this but annoyingly it's not gonna happen.
Proper pub landlord spec this one.

In a rare feat of me bothering my arse and the planets being aligned the headlights are all now working. My battle with the Prince of Darkness continues...

Bonfire night 1985, me and my student mates are trying to siphon the fuel out of one of these in the car park next to our student digs. It's a cold night and the windows are steamed up, suddenly a hand reaches up from the back seat of the jag to wipe away the condensation. We'd chosen the only car in the car park with a couple in the back having it off.

Time to blow the dust of this one, I'm picking up my next car tomorrow night(Cough 944 Cough) so am open to offers on this one. Did 100 miles over the weekend and it's still driving lovely. And all of the electrics work!!!!! Just not all at the same time..

I can afford the car but I couldn't afford the resulting divorce.

Posted

Oh dear, that really is tempting. In a 'I don't know why I'm asking as I really need to forget I saw this advert' way, is the MOT until February?

Posted

Sorry, I should've made that clear. It's MOT'd and taxed til the end of February.

Like others of this parish I would love to drive around in the SIII but having a X300 really excludes me.

Posted

Well due to an amazing amount of interest* it's now on ebay. With two weeks to go until Christmas. What could possibly go wrong?

Posted

Not allowed?  A link to a nice Jag for sale?  They're practically compulsory.

I think you're mistaken about a lack of interest - what you're seeing here is a lack of cash, not enthusiasm.  Plus several of us are already more Jagged up than our other halves would ideally like.

For what it's worth, I paid £695 for mine last summer, with a bit more MOT and an excellent interior but a lot more superficial rust and one fuel tank sitting loose on the back seat.  Best of luck with the sale (genuinely, not sarcastically).

Sorrry Skizer, it was't meant to be a dig at the fine members of this parish. It's been on Carandclassic, Retrorides ,Gumtree AND Pistonheads with barely a murmur. Price wise it's up for a haggle but I've not had a viewing yet. I'm confident* that when someone actually views it and sees how good it is they'll realise how much of a bargain it is and not even haggle.

Gosh, in that case I can understand how you might be feeling a bit frustrated. Maybe it's the time of year?  Fingers crossed for you, anyway  :-)

Posted

Oh, shit me. At the moment its on £395. I am WORRYINGLY tempted to bash a bid in..... I think though I'd better concentrate on paying for my car storage.

Posted

I would not worry yet with six days to go, the serious bidders wait until towards the end of the sale.

Well, ebay was a waste of time due to the obligatory mongs. Anyone want a Jaguar shaped present under their tree on Christmas day?
