Busy day yesterday. Visited a friend to play cars.

IMG_20190706_092722.thumb.jpg.e5182a6014fc4feccf841ae9e6e59bb2.jpg

Then went to the Louwman Museum, which is just incredible.

Makes a Bond Minicar seem entirely ordinary.

Over 100 miles covered. I was quite broken by last night! 2CV seems fine. Swapping it for a Datsun 1000 today.

Crap. Yes. I got a fleeting look at it and meant to go back to have a better look. Never did.

Yesterday was Japan Classic Sunday. It was amazing. 550 cars, all stunning and mostly very rare.

Just gets better every year. Will be a full video report but by 2pm, much like the museum, it had become a bit much. Too much 'I've never seen one of those before.'

2CV didn't move yesterday, and may only move about half a mile today. Not sure yet. Have nowhere booked tonight. Will hunker down with friends to steal their internet, do some video editing and then make plans for the week.

Thanks. I'm now at Burton Car Company in Zutphen, who specialise in 2CVs. Indeed, Elly's suspension dampers, half the engine and her exhaust clamps came from this place!

She has already caused some amusement for being RHD.

The oil leak is one issue, but there's a front end knock that I'm increasingly unhappy about.

Front end knock looks increasingly like kingpins, but they reckon the arm is knackered too, so no quick and easy fix. They did say they could replace the entire front end with recon parts for about 1000 Euros. I declined that offer, mostly because the steering rack has already been reconditioned, so it would seem foolish to replace it. I'll be living with that until I get home.

I foresee major expenditure once I'm done with travelling, as the suspension cans are also quite rotten. They're one of the few original items on the car, and it shows. Mix in a pair of reconditioned front arms and it's all a bit YIKES.

Oil leak does look like pushrod tube seals. They had time for a look, but not time to remove a cylinder head and deal with iffy seals. Not sure I fancy doing that either. Also filed under 'live with it.'

Had a day of rest yesterday, well, I went for a bike ride and and walk around the delightful town of Zutphen and left Elly at the B&B. She repaid me by refusing to start. Checked the plugs. They looked pretty old. Maybe we forgot to swap the newer ones in when we swapped heads... One was a little white, which is a little concerning. Too weak on one side? Maybe that explains the pinking.

All gentle pootling about today though. Started by going to Gallery Aaldering, where they have many fancy cars. And pantograph wipers. Elly had to slum it in the car park.

Wasn't at all Autoshite, but then I saw a W123 for sale with an advertised classic car business up a track. That's better!

D_QzSr8UcAE_1kN.jpg

Then we went to look at a castle.

D_Q8bNHU4AE4AoD.jpg

I saw a Cuore.

D_RLMHnUcAAu-4z.jpg

It was a short hop across the border into Germany.

D_RT6DTUcAEJqyo.jpg

Lots of uninspiring buildings and bloody terrible, aggressive driving. Just like being back in Birmingham really.

Then some weather happened.

Now at my German AirBNB. Back across the border tomorrow. We've covered about 800 miles so far, but I think we'll need to start covering miles a little more in coming days. Visiting the DAF museum on Sunday, then will start aiming for Normandy.

Fuel filler clip rusted to bits.

D_hrl0MXUAAvlB3.jpg

Cured fuel leak by just driving. To France. 1000 miles completed at this point.

D_nUP73XkAI6BbO.jpg

Carried on to Reims. First visit!

D_maO6MXsAEf34H.jpg

Found a Renault 16. The owner came out for a chat. In his pants.

Then, today. About 40 miles from the Citroen meet.

D_wE03XXkAEQNTg.jpg

At the Citroen meet. OMG QUEUE CHAOS

D_wYclPXkAAt0Hh.jpg

ALL OF TEH BROWN

Having registered, I then ran away to my AirBNB. Village seems nice.

UP TO DATE! In short, still pissing oil everywhere, now pissing fuel everywhere, still pinking at factory settings, I think due to weak running for a reason not yet found. Timing backed off, cooler spark plugs fitted and she's well enough to cover over 200 miles today.

Just love your adventures, Mrs BMH won't even let me bring the roffle winning Merc down to her sisters in Torbay, insisting that we take the 'modern', as it's more economical (true) and reliable (errm, cam belt due errrrr).

Excellent, keep up the good work.

Thx for the updates.

If you are driving in Italia pls be aware as what seems to uk drivers as aggressive and tailgating is normal here, the use of the car horn is NOT such an aggressive gesture here and does NOT mean the uk equivalent of " F YOU". Headlight flashing does mean " move over fast, I'm coming though"

As there have been a few questions on breakdown cover in Europe and older cars and you being the most recent traveller could you enlighten us with your take on the subject; who ?, cost ?, financial cover limit versus car value ?, recovery distance limits and recovery to home address etc ?

Would be helpful for a few of us I recon.

Thanks

Found away to fix one leak at least. The petrol filler had a hole in it. It has a replacement filler now.

Yesterday, I spent a good three hours watching Citroens enter the show. Very good of the organisers to funnel ALL traffic through one junction. The queues were epic!

Today, I'm off to Le Mans for obligatory photos, before meeting Saabnut.

'Crashed' Citroen recreates a scene from 60's French comedy  Le Corniaud - the fake 'battery' and jewels also features in the film.

usual French organisation too.

This! Amazing isn't it. It all seems to work somehow. I read somewhere that Anglo-Saxons love signs telling them what to do, whereas the French just get on with it and see what happens...

Mr Hubnut has departed Chez Saabnut Fr after giving Elly a little fettling whilst here. One more stop in La Belle France then tomorrow the long section starts.

Yesterday was 34c and the forecast is for temperatures to rise over the coming week peaking at over 40c

Should be pleasant*
