Dealer Special Shite

Back in the golden days of shite cars, dealerships seemed to think that what their product was really missing was a tacky bodykit and some cheap rimz. They addressed the problem by launching some truly amazing* special editions.

Your mission, should you wish to accept it, is to track down as many of those 'dealer specials' as possible and post pictures... No aftermarket/barryboys stuff, only pukka* kits allowed !

Here's a couple to get you started :

I guess you could add everything that's in the Decals thread too, no?

I remember a special series done by Ford Germany (not sure whether they did it in the UK too) in the early-mid 70s. Each line (Escort, Capri, Taunus, Consul/Granada) had a so-called 'Strada' version. They were painted in 70s shock colours, had body-coloured Minilites and black-out trim.

Rover 820i/Si Special Edition:

Rover_820_SE_2_zpsfe2f6490.jpeg

Great looking car, you got the full TWR bodykit, rare Mk1 16" Prestige alloys, full Black rouched leather topped off with a rather dismal 2.0 engine. Something like this should have at least come with a V6 engine.

I'd love to buy one of these and drop a V6 in it.

It wasnt specific to one dealer but I'm sure it was a Scottish dealers only special edition: the Escort mk6 Osprey, basically a base Encore model with alloys and a spoiler.

Sticking with Scottish dealer only special editions and Escorts, the mk4 Escort ecosse, basically a base model Popular but available with silver paint which was never available on regular Populars, a pop up sunroof, a blue pin stripe down the side with a Saltire at the end of it and reflective number plates at a time when they were considered an extra.

It still goes on even now, I'm sure you've all seen those white Corsa Ds with the black roof and alloys, and the skirts/spoiler/splitters from the SRi and known as the 'Limited Edition' which is now a regular model in the Corsa range, based on the SXi model, well the forerunner to this which presumably gave Vauxhall the idea to make it a factory special edition was the Corsa PVR (Peter Vardy Racing, Peter Vardy being a Scottish VX dealer) again white with a black roof it was based this time on the 1.2 Club model with aftermarket 17" team Dynamics alloys and the SRI exterior styling kit.

Continuing the theme was the Arnold Clark special edition Fiat Grande Punto GT1/Stripe, basically an Active model with the alloys, spoiler and side skirts from the Active Sport model plus a white stripe offset to the left of the roof and along the lower side of the car, effectively making it an Active Sport model with the front fogs missing.

Then there's the Evans Halshaw only Fiesta GTR, a white 3 door Fiesta 1.25 Edge but with black aftermarket 17" alloys, and the skirts/spoiler/bumper extensions from the Zetec S

It seems to be the in thing right now with silly young people who prefer to buy one of these base models with body kits than buy the much better equipped model the body kit has been pinched from.

Oh, don't know how I forgot this abomination, the Clio World Series, effectively a 2009 facelift Clio 1.2 Dynamique (same as my car) only these had World Series written on the tailgate, a big WS decal on the rear pillars, some nasty side skirts, a front splitter with 2 big points in it and a black rear bumper diffuser with 2 fake matt silver plastic exhausts on it to make it look like the car has a centre exit exhaust when you can see the real exhaust editing the left hand side

Technically, the Eclipse was a dealer special

Although it was offered nationwide, the actual specs of it could be varied. When you bought one, you had "points" to use on extras. I forget how many you had, or how many things cost, but for example you might have enough points for driving lamps and a spoiler, but not mudflaps. Or you could swap the spoiler for mats and flaps. I think an upgraded stereo was on offer and maybe even leccy windows for a massive amount of points.

As such, the dealer had to get involved in actually speccing the cars up. To avoid holes in the body they'd arrive without spoilers or lamps which were fitted if the customer had specced them.

I thought all Escort Eclipses had electric front windows as standard. As well as central locking, Power steering and a sunroof. Have never seen one without a spoiler either, although I reckon a blue one with front spots and RS Turbo wheels would still look good even now.

Another I thought of is the Nova Turbo S diesel, effectively a base Nova, Merit? With the 1.5 TD engine, a spoiler. An alarm and "sports" wheel trims. Was sold by Tomkins Vauxhall on Edinburgh road Glasgow IIRC
