nacho man
Also known as the "world car platform" ford knocked up for the mondeo mk1. I recently went on my holidays to Greece and ordered a few car mags from the 90s to take to read on the beach and one contained a road test of the mondeo. I must of looked a right tool of the trade reading these, I think the topless birds were impressed though. I also took this. In the first page was a letter. (good book by the way) I wonder if Mr Aldhouse ever did read it? the book was in very good condition so I doubt he did, probably had to crunch some numbers, order some mac powerbook 140's, while speaking on his Nokia 1100 and touching up Cheryl. Ever since my hols I have been looking for one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-FORD-MONDEO-2-0LITRE-GHIA-AUTOMATIC-44000-MILES-ONLY-/190876666006?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2c7122c896 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-FORD-MONDEO-LX-Manual-Hatchback-/171073708204?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item27d4c9a0ac So this is just a little bit of appreciation for what is a great car. Conrad D. Conelrad
Like button pressed for taking 90s Autocars on holiday. I know the world car label is referring to the underpinnings, but I always wondered why they styled the Contour slightly differently. A lot of vehicle regulations have been harmonised, but I wonder if you could design a car which could be sold in every country without modification. Station
I love those mk1 Mondeos. Love the fact you took those mags to read on the beach.
Pillock
I quite liked mine. Seats were too spongy but it went well enough and put up with a lot of abuse.Sacked off because the garage wanted £700 for a clutch, due in part to daft design.
wuvvum
I still have that edition of Autocar somewhere. I remember being very impressed that they'd managed to coax a 1.6 Mondeo to 120mph on the Autobahn (albeit with a following wind). I didn't know then about the optimism of Ford speedometers. Conrad D. Conelrad
I remember my dad bringing his new Mondeo 2.0 Ghia home in 1994. It was like a spaceship compared to the Sierra it replaced. It had a CD player, air conditioning and a rechargeable torch in the glovebox! He had been worried before collecting it because the car scheme person described it as 'purple' (it was Java Blue). CortinaDave
I've had a few of these. A genuinely great car in my book and a huge advance on the sierra. Still a nice motor to drive today and much better in mk1 form than mk2
Lord Sterling
I do like these a lot. Nice family cars that still hold thier own.
Wilko220
Given the company I'm in, I'm slightly embarrassed to say that Mondeos still do nothing for me. I'm sure there will come a time though, as there does for almost everything eventually.
Spiny Norman
Excellent choice of reading material for lying on a beach! I've liked all the Mondeos, but these originals were cracking cars in their day compared to all the competition.
CreepingJesus
My late, lamented Ghia X is still one my favourites. I'll have another someday...
holbeck
In June 1993 I started a new job and with it came a mondeo 1.6LX, I was given a fuel card with K420UDX on it. Sadly I never saw that car as it failed PDI so I got a cavalier hire car (in which I was refused entry to Ford Dagenham plant and had to park on the verge of the A13!). Later in the week K439UDX was delivered. Sadly that one was full of faults as well, air vents on the dash not connected, trim hoop for the top of the hatchback that fell off on day one, heat shield for the cat fell off on the M25 on the second day. Starter packed up shortly after. One of the other guys who started at the same time had a loose rear wheel as the hub nut was cross threaded on assembly. Back in the day, all of that was par for the course if you got a new model before the bugs were sorted. That said, I was never stranded at the side of the road, did I like it?? Yes! Had it for 2. 1/2 years, put 80K on it, crashed it into the back of a Volvo 240 but it kept coming back for more.
greengartside
My dad had a Nouveau Red Mk1 Ghia, exactly like that picture at the top - K477 SVE. Was a very early Mk1 with a build date of Jan '93 and registered 2nd March '93. Apparently his was an ex-demo and loaned to a member of Parliament along with 1000 others for trialling/buying etc. Dad had it from 1997-2005 and only got rid when he cooked the engine coming home. Should have chucked another engine in it and kept the bloody thing. Oh on a sidenote, Dad's Ghia also had the rechargeable torch in the glovebox (which I still have after I stripped it for spares) and they are worth a few quid on ebay now... warren t claim
I nearly bought an ex Ford press demonstrator K*FMC for Pingu's auction back in 2002. Every panel was dented and I had a sneaking suspicion it might of been a Ford Overland Challenge car. Does anyone remember that series hosted by Nicky Campbell that was on TV back in 1993? Driving a couple of Mondeos and Mavericks around the world across the Bering Straights. Worth watching if you missed it.
CreepingJesus
My torch was missing! Never bothered me, as I have a multitude of torches anyway. Still have the CD autochanger box kicking about, must see if I can persuade it to work in the Volvo.

Rusty_Rocket
I have memories of the early ones being flawed- the 1.8 zetec iirc had valve problems, they would seize in their guides when they got hot. Might have been blamed on petrol quality etc but I do remember it caused plenty of headaches.
phil_lihp
They are great cars, I'd not mind an early one. I remember being very excited when my father got given N307FCW out of the spare car pool - a 2.0 LX which alas had been treated very badly for its first two years - it turned up filthy and covered in scratches and scrapes with half flat tyres and had never been serviced, which triggered a never-ending series of problems with the engine. It had a huge appetite for catalytic converters but it seemed like a spaceship in comparison to the 1988 Escort diesel it replaced and was supremely comfortable for long journeys. They're good-looking cars too, much better than the late-nineties facelift.
CortinaDave
The best of the bunch I had was a K plate Si. It was registered 2nd march 93, so also one of the very first. was 12 years old when I had it but felt brand new. Tight as a drum, really quick compared to other Mondeos I've had, and with the funky recaro seats. Like a knob I bought a Calibra for no good reason and gave the Mondeo to my then girlfriend. She killed every car she got her hands on but even she failed to ruin this one. it was sold on in about 2008 still as good as ever to a bloke down south, but I heard after that some twat had stolen it and it was burnt out. A sad end for a great car. RIP K321SSM. I also had a blue 2.0 Ghia Auto M388HVK in 2002 and an N reg white ex police GLX a couple of years later. both also great motors. The R reg Mk2 GLX i bought after was cheap and nasty in comparison, creaky dash and eggshell bumpers and far less appealling to drive. I remember work having a 51 plate mk3 brand new at the time I had my M reg Ghia, and being really disappointed with it as a drivers car compared to my mk1
The Reverend Bluejeans
I worked at a Ford dealer in early '93 when these came out snd I used to really enjoy using one (normally a1.8TD) for long trips. A very well sorted car that was a major leap forward for Ford. The Mk2 was never as good..
catsinthewelder
The first car that I drove on the public roads (on L plates) was my dad's 1.8 Mondeo Verona in Juice green (N---OTN). It was his company car at the time and he bought it from the company when he retired and kept it a few more years, nice car.
beko1987
I remember Dad getting a White M reg (2.0i I 'think') new, sadly I preferred his G reg 2.0i Granada over it at the time, which sadly he binned due to rust and he told me 'An appetite for oil 5 grades thicker than it should have had' Need to own a nice early Mondeo, they are growing on me! Love the early press letter
trigger
I used to have a Mk1 Mondeo, a 1996 N plate 1.8TD GLX, It had done 120k and only cost me £350 of ebay, I must say i did really like the car, it drove excellently and was very good on fuel, sadly the bumpers were a bit tatty as were the arches, once i got bored my uncle bought it of me a year later for the some money I paid for it and ran it into the ground over the next two years before scrapping it. I saw this one at the science museum in London recently, I'm not sure what spec it was but it was LHD with front fog lights but what looked like LX spec and a rare colour. 20130707_171357 by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr 20130707_171502 by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr Early Mk1 Ford Mondeo by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr Banger Kenny
