Aldo's Edinburgh Shite Spots!

That's not the Applause I was thinking of Alan, I'm sure I've seen a maroon/Burgandy coloured one up in kingsknowe, just over the level crossing there.

The Escort is in Currie Neil, it's been lying for at least 2 years.

Some great spots there, I'm an Embra boy myself - didn't realise there was so much chod around, but then I don't get out much these days

By the way, this is my first post - been lurking here for ages due to an unhealthy automotive nostalgia, though admittedly my interest is largely academic as my current conveyance is only 4 years old...  One day I'd like to get my hands one something more vintage...

That would be amazing if there were 2 of these in the Capital. I must go looking...

That pic of Daltons is the way things should be. 15-20 year old cars scrapped is fair enough. Chances are a lot of cars by that age will have moon miles and be generally shagged.

Last time I was at Nobles on Kirkcaldy there was a hell of a lot of stuff up to 07 plate!! I'm always amazed folk throw away cars that are practically new in my world

I agree, it's just that the Mondeo looks like it had been nicely kept, and Mk1s are starting to become fairly scarce. I just realised the other day that L581PSG was probably the car I used to see in a quiet street in Corstorphine, but never got round to taking a picture.

Regarding Noble's, this was probably the most unexpected thing I've seen there recently!

That Minor is the right colour and plate to be a ex Edinburgh police car. I believe they used Minors around that time. That needs investigation I think. Problem is the COD has probably been issued so its gone anyway. I keep saying this I know but I'm DEFO going to see if that Vega is still there at some point this week.lol.

Oh and keep those eyes peeled for those early Vectra's please........the want is now a must have.lol.

Oh GOLD1971 if you were wondering who the dude in the gold Vectra c was waving at you at the bottom of Easter Rd last week twas me.lol.

Yes, the reg is gone from the DVLA, sadly, and when I stopped by Noble's a few Sundays back I couldn't see the car.

I have to say, I haven't noticed an N-plate Vectra in some time, so if you've seen one then there's no harm in leaving a note on it. It's the kind of car very few people would want (I imagine), so the owner may be glad if you're prepared to pay a reasonable price for it!

I must have been oblivious to you waving at me on Saturday - I would certainly have waved back even if I wasn't sure who you were! I think at that time I was suffering from severe hunger pangs and nipped into the Tesco there for a pasty. Earlier that day, when I stopped at lights on the junction of Roseburn St and Russell Rd, a few guys sitting outside the pub pointed at my car - so I'm never sure now if that is just people noticing a strange car or whether they know it's me from Flickr or AS!

Don't know what the crack with Nobles is, only time I was there they let me in the yard but as everything was so jammed packed together I couldn't get what I needed... Stacks 3 & 4 high and 12 inches if yer lucky to get between them. My Vectra got collected by Car Take Back by Nobles, I guess they aren't interested in breaking now, just crushing..??

Went to UPI instead for parts, job jobbed.

Last time I went to Noble's, a couple of years back, it was actually for a photography mission. They were ok about it, but realistically, the cars and vans were only being stripped to be cubed - the EMR motor was waiting.

If you know them, and they know you've got readies, then I think big simple stuff, like engines might be ok; otherwise it's scrap metal all the way now.

My understanding is that Noble's don't let the public in anymore - not enough to be made out of parts sales I suppose. I used to go there in the 1980s with my dad, and I loved the place. I do wonder why they have literally masses of, for example, Mercs, all crammed together - do they sometimes export a load of them? If not, and if they're not selling parts off them, why not get them melted now? As for photos, I made the mistake earlier this year of taking one just outside their premises, of a Galant parked on the road, and some knucklehead came running up to me telling me I wasn't allowed to do that - some shit reason that I can't even remember now. I'm generally wary of people who work at these places anyway, which is why I content myself with taking pics of what I can see when the yards are closed up and there's no one around to get stroppy with me.

Well I had a drive around Kingsknowe in my lunch break today, and couldn't see an Applause - although I did see a maroon Daihatsu Grand Move, so I wondered if maybe that's what you'd seen Aldo?

Regarding scrappies, how about this ending up in one?

I pretty much grew up in Noble's yard- there every weekend with me dad as soon as I could climb up a Volvo 144. I was heartbroken when I was refused entry, proper gutted! Notice they have a new yard along the road a bit which is full of export stuff. Nobles boss man did tell me last year that they will be opening a seperate yard for spares, but not seen anything happening about it..maybe he was just trying to make me feel better so I didn't break down sobbing in a rainbow coloured puddle. There is another yard in Michelston, which is jam packed with hundreds of export stuff too..no wonder you cannot get decent shite up here.

Nobles as was was brilliant. I remember teetering on the bonnet of a montego three cars up attempting to remove a spoiler from the boot lid of the mk1 sierra 2.0s in front. Old Jean Noble was a bit of a legend. Looked like a burst couch and not a tooth in her head but apparently a millionaire. Fair play to her. I think she died ten years or so ago.

Nickys Yard which used to be next door didn't ever bother neatly stacking the cars , they just had a massive sprawling pile. Frustrating when that part you needed was glinting in the sunshine on some totally inaccessible motor.

Nobles used to have a second yard in smeaton near Muirs where the scrap NCB steam locos still sit. Not sure what happened to that

Nicky's Yard - that kind of rings a bell with me, now you mention it. It's all such a long time ago now, and my memories get a bit hazy. Speaking of places that started refusing entry, I remember being gutted when AG Watson's started insisting that they remove the parts, so I could no longer get in for a wander and a few badges to hide in my jacket pockets. Of course, the irony is that it's now "U-pull-it"!

Back to Randolph Ind Est, what's the script with that sprawling yard on the other side of the road? I understand it is owned by Thomas Muir Haulage or someone? Some of the trucks and fire engines in there look like they've been sitting for decades, and I've had several enquiries about vehicles after I've posted my photos on Flickr - the Sinclair C5 in particular got a lot of interest! My favourite in that place was the Mk2 Cortina, but I've a feeling someone managed to get their hands on that one, as I haven't noticed it when I've been walking past recently.

The Cortina belonged to one of the yard workers and sat there for years. Despite looks it was very solid but as far as I know he eventually just decided to crush it which was a shame. Said worker now has a saab 900 festering in the same spot instead.

What a damn shame - and what a stupid thing to do, as surely in parts value alone it would have been worth selling? I'm wondering if the 900 you mention is the one outside the tyre place? I asked if it was sale, just as an excuse to get a rear photo of the car, and the guy told me quite forcefully that he would never sell it.

I remember Nicky's Yard: combining car salvage and extreme sports!

The yard across the road is (from what I hear) owned by one of the wider Kirkcaldy scrap + haulage families, and rented out in bits. Hence some of Muir's motors live there, as do some of Randolph's heavy haulage units.

Thats the one - He was the same with the Cortina... wouldnt sell it either, so I presume this Saab will go the same way after years of sitting, and he'll replace it with another car to sit and fester... and so it goes on...

Well I first photographed the Saab there in October 2011, and the car has been unlicensed for over 5 years. It's a 1983 model, and has a St Clair of Kirkcaldy sticker on the back window, so probably a local car from day one. The reg DKC7K must be worth a bit, so it would make sense to sell the plate AND the car - but what do I know?

That makes sense, as the area seems to straddle several different business units. There's all sorts of interesting stuff in there - I had 2 guys asking me to put them in touch with whoever owns the AEC Militant that's there, but I don't think they got anywhere with their enquiries.

You guys do know there is a small yard still in Glenrothes too? Handy sometimes!

Russells? I seem to remember having trouble finding that open. It would be good because Upullit is a bit of a trek and they have a camera set up at Halbeath so they can see me coming and make sure any examples of the car I'm driving can be removed from the yard.
