I picked up this gem in Cornwall back in the summer....

Ahh those were the days (not that I remember them, as I doubt I was born, or would have been very young!)

Now, that could have been the long hot summer of '84, now where did I put that 'Frankie says war' t-shirt
Yeah, certainly the early 80's due to the Astra Estate if anything.

Also the 3 caravans in the foreground have double glazed perspex windows (instead of heavier glass) which became the norm around 81/82 :oops:

Nice card, but I'm worried about the caption...problem is, it's trying to be ironic. The postcard people are laughing at the caravanners - and that's not right. 1984 eh? Didn't some writer bloke called George Orwell write a rather turgid book about that? The caravan crowd are a long way from the Miners' Strike. Perhaps the lady in the purple bikini is reading The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail?

An Escort Sport too! Did we think an R16 as well? Was very pleased to find it, as it's the town where I was born and grew up just outside of (ditto Baz), used to go shopping there every Saturday and fruit and veg would get bought off the market that was set up as below (remember, in those days before Tesco etc ruled the world?).

As I've recounted before, at 16 I started work at a very old-fashioned firm of surveyors/estate agents on the RH side and my office window overlooked this scene. I can think of all sorts of wonderful old stuff I used to see from my 2nd floor vantage point, including the Manta A I would later own.

This one recently bought, shown here a little while ago. Cranbrook Road in beautiful downtown Ilford, with a bonny little 100A coming towards us and a cracking pair of FE's waiting to turn right. Estate or VX4/90, tough choice eh? Skoda there too, and maybe one of those Ergomatic cab tractor unit Leyland/AEC's at the other side of the lights.

  • 5 weeks later...

Got a couple more at our local Oxfam yesterday (where they sell them for the mysterious price of 49p)...

A genteel Yorkshire town someone may recognise:

There's a Maxi leading a line of Fords (I think). Have a vivid memory from about 1973 of rather glamourous Mum-of-friend having to hitch up acres of maxi-skirt in order to drive Maxi car. The skirt was dark blue, the car honey yellow.

Wonder if this is still there?

Presumably they will have added a bypass & closed the Post Office by now.

Blimey its Harrogate, or Arrogarty, or even Arrogant as us Leeds folk call it..

Have rather scary memories of careering down that hill past the spa baths at about 80mph at rush hour in a very ropy BMW 320i with not much in the way of brakes, i wasn't driving, the joys of car pooling!!

We seem to have two threads for postcards...

I've only just seen this one, it's great. PMSL ast some of the captions and comments

I tried to find the other 'Postcards' thread to post the Oxfam cards, but stumbled back upon the 'Hedge' first.

Volksy's right about Harrogate. Said to be good for civilized things like cream teas and second-hand bookshops so probably not going to feature as a background to anything by Jimmy 'The Street' McGovern.

Nice to see that the Babbacombe Model Village town planners are developing the place 'realistically'. Post Office closed & replaced by a 24-hour snooker hall; bank converted into a nightclub; Unitarian Chapel turned into a mosque; Asda and Texas Homecare three miles down the road no doubt. And little figures of smack addicts hanging around the bus station. Nice.

You still haven't described a modern scene though, if it includes Texas Homecare then we're about 12 years out of date as they were taken over by Homebase in 1995! I miss the "Just ask for Tom" slogan and the free car stickers you used to get depicting him as a silhouette which my child like mind thought was a paint brush as it was that sort of shape!
