Back in the U.K. this morning via Portsmouth, riding up the m4x and stopped for fuel and realised with about 150 miles to go that BOTH fork seals had gone. It’s one job I’ve never had to do on a bike. Great.

Probably should’ve called the breakdown as looking at the amount of oil on the front wheel and tyre I dodged a bullet.

Yeah I realised my fork seal had blown when I was rapidly approaching a corner pulled the brakes as usual and only had 50% stopping power, fork seal had blown and oil had pissed all over the pads, it can be very dodgy :D

I used to buy bikes like your Guzzi, and just the same as you plan. I became a dab hand at reshaping broken screens with a Dremel.

Cable ties and melted cable ties will keep that togrther no problem.

Best of luck, love seeing bikes in this condition on the road.

Crap weather & local scrotes on the Rob, have put me off quite a lot. Bloody expensive ornament though 🤦‍♂️

14th Sept for me, and its still costing me £150 a month plus insurance and tax sat in the garage, it'll probably be April before it gets used, buying outright next time methinks.

Did 28 miles on Saturday. Another planned outing this Saturday assuming its not pissing it down.

Would have used it for work this week but ended up on dad taxi duty.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt its a good 200cc less than the 250cc.....

Possibly a baby Fantic, possibly not.

Good compression & trying to start & catch on easy start.

Annnnnnnd Identified - its an Italjet JC50

Seems these came with 2 flavours of engine and mine has the slightly more desirable Minarelli engine, I mean, slightly more as in its slightly more desirable to trap your dick in your zipper than it is to get a dose of crabs.

me 9 rolled around to 91k this month and it's started ailing slightly - an intermittent clacking noise when lugging around in second. Is it a CCT? A piece of clutch getting flicked around? Or something yet more sinister? Whatever it is, the bike sounds lovely at idle, suggesting it's a gearbox and/or clutch thing.

I bought it in 2017 for £1800 w/ 18k on it. It did need a bit of work inc. a re-shimming, fork oil, some replaced perished pipes and hoses (which saw me stranded in South Dalton one night). But it was soon sorted and I set about piling the miles on in earnest. Lovely bikes. Fast, handle okay (esp. on fresh tyres), and they're roomy, comfy and with a decent suspension set up can be pretty damn plush. Going to have to retire it though, I reckon.

Ps those six pot tokicos went this spring (the photo's from last year), and got replaced w/ 4 pot nissins (Bandit 12 callipers bolt straight on!!) - improved the anchorage by about 80% - should've done it much earlier

they're a bit overlooked as well, and tend to be pretty affordable - and yeah, they're solid. I've thrown everything at this bar track days - I live in the middle of the yorkshire wolds and thousands of those 91k miles have been on back lanes with grass growing up the middle, and not hanging around either. Does want headstock bearings every 20k mind you. And that's not just mine - they've got a rep for it. But everything else about them is properly strong.

I agree, I sold mine to buy a 2005 5VY R1, which was by far the best looking Japanese bike ever but I have to admit the zx9 was a better all rounder apart from the brakes.

Fabio Taglioni the mastermind behind the desmodromic 90°V Twin engine still used in Ducati bikes today, looking rather cool.

And of course there's another great Italian engineer who's work is still very much with us today - Ing Lino Tonti. But we need to consider Ing Guilio Cesare Carcano first. Carcano designed Moto Guzzi's first V twin engine (the large block) which more or less saved Guzzi and put them on the course they still follow today. But it was really his 'apprentice' and, later, successor Tonti who put Guzzi on the map by replacing the original loop frame with his far sportier design sealing Guzzi's fame.

Lino Tonti (right) with Mike Hailwood. This is the original V7 with Tonti's first frame and Carcano's engine. This bike evolved into the Le Mans.

But it's Tonti's work in the mid '70's which was more important as it is still the foundation of today's bikes. His second frame, housing his own engine design, the 'small block' v-twin, are the elements from which the modern Guzzi v-twins have directly evolved.
