@doug lovely guzzi man best of luck with it. I’ve a mate who’s big time into them and had a loan of one for a while. Lots to like about them even if the linked brakes nearly had me off when I went in a little to hot with some gravel in the mix.

Know there’s a few bm pervs on here could do with a second opinion… trusty old crate done a failure to proceed today on way back from mot after being laid up for a bit. A1DE7891-3FD8-4F8C-A7A8-25D6952623B6.thumb.jpeg.ff4ad08b0f28b7b77be7929a6819f508.jpeg

Clutch slip on way up the a13 under load so nursed it there. Lever felt a bit graunchy so in hopeless optimism bought a can of (fucking 7.99 wd)  and squirted up the cable. No effect. Come back through the tunnel into cowboy country am making progress down the a2 and it starts giving it big noise no forward motion. Cog down still same coast of exit in time honoured fashion and by time in roll to the lights clutch is fully activated and all lever feel has left the scene. Wound the cable way out and got a bit of bite which then went awol with a hefty pull making nasty crunchy noises. Walk home after spending an age getting key to work in disc lock return with transit and have to cut the lock of in the side of the south circ with spinning death wheel (no one bats an eyelid, in fact passerby helps me load it which was nice as couldn’t find me scaff plank). Am thinking it has a push rod to activate clutch which has seized? Of course it had fixed itself by time I got back to it and have just hoofed it out the van and popped the front up the drive to park it up. Was going to Wales this weekend and Pyrenees in a few months. After laying out for insurance and mot today the ungrateful bastard is not inspiring confidence. Any info and advice appreciated.  Know the clutch is a fucker of a job and feeling a tear down is poss the only option hoping someone will have a miracle fix and point out the correct place to squirt my wd all over and torch it has already been considered before anyone mentions.

The clutch is not a hard job but it is a big job and takes many  hours work. Sorry no miracle cures. On mine the clutch push rod had snapped in 2 but the gearbox was also toast.

Have you checked the clutch slave cylinder?

Cheers man. Clutch was done in 08 have bmw service ticket for it for 1300 quid! 30  of that was for mot and another 30 on bearings and seals. Long time ago though doubt it done many miles really. I’ve used it off road and made it stink once or twice. Feels push rod like to me though if I’m going there would be a foul not to Chuck a clutch in really. Slave showing to visible signs of fail and don’t you normally get no clutch rather than all the clutch. Certainly been the case when I’ve had them fail on cars. Much more useful for getting home too haha

No idea if bikes are hired around here. You can borrow one of mine. Here you insure the bike, and so anyone over 25 can ride it as long as they have a licence.

You are over 25, aren't you?

mentally? probably not! 🤣🤣🤣

My memory is not too sharp but is it possible to remove the slave cylinder then pull out the push rod? I am not sure. Might be worth a try/look.

Worth a look for sure. It’s all a bit German to me to be honest and haven’t had to pull it apart much in the last four years of ownership. It’s a great bike though very much not normal in every way. Bank hol weekends looking more fixing than riding I’ll report back. Have a spare rt1100 kicking about which may be useful will see.

I burnt out the clutch on my Guzzi V1200 Sport 2v getting it stuck in deep sand a few years ago. It was ok as I nursed it for the next few thousand miles before slipping got too much.

Had it changed as I didn't have the space (the frame has to be lifted off of the engine), specialist tools or knowledge to do it my self. I has completely knacked the flywheel too. £1500 bill, but that included a major service too.

Very much doubt I will ever bring it over to Spain so.looks like I maybe selling it soon. One of the few bikes I have kept for more than four years. Fantastic bikes, vastly underated.

Some minor fiddling and amateurism. When i stripped and cleaned the carbs i was puzzled that one of them had the mixture screw out at 4 turns and the other at 3 turns. "thats far too much" i thought i set them both to 2 which the bike hated. 3 was better but it was still a bit rough at minimal throttle, opened the front one out to 3.5 and it was better so given that another quarter turn.

Also checked the jet needle position. No idea how i'd missed it before but it was at position 2 (i.e on the lean side). Set this back to the middle position and will check it later on. What i'm not sure about is why it ran ok with the needles in this position before including a k&n filter - i'd have expected that to run hopelessly lean? unless various other air jets were blocked up countering it out? who knows.

On a P reg it won't have a slave, cable on the 5 speed box.. the boxes weren't the best..never seen a pushrod seize, but easy enough to check on a GS. They do need the clearance set up very carefully or they can eat a clutch in no time. Hopefully it's not stripped splines, or  driveshaft letting go. Take out the starter and you can see inside at the plate etc..

Just done my 1100s clutch and it was a pain in the arse..20210730_174801.thumb.jpg.6c42f990f873f4292ddd2b3b13966af8.jpg

Nice, I had a 600, couldn't believe how fast it was. Big fat tyres gripped like the proverbial to a blanket and gave me heaps of confidence. Don't see many original hornets anymore ☹️

Cheers fella. Yeah cable though wondered if the push rod jabber thing was hydro (ain’t done nowt but service bits on it till now)  turns out the thrust bearing? In push rod jabber was toast. Looks like that’s why it was sticking. Clutch within service limit though steels look less than new as does main seal. Shall chuck in a kit and a rubber whilst in there (and keep old clutch) as in a month me and the other big ugly fucker are off to Spain.

Rode a few 6’s and they’re a world better than a bandit from seat of pants. Mate bought a 9 and I was in charge of purchase and riding it home, it nearly killed me several times. That thing needed respect though I’m a stubborn idiot so faced near death a few times in the week before he passed his test and I handed it over. He was stepping up from a h100 Honda which made me a bit nervy handing it over though he does fly planes for a living so turned out all good.

Where I found the 9 one of the most disappointing bikes I’ve ridden . But I was coming of a blade at the time .

when you went up the Rev range you kept thinking “ here we go “ but it never came . Like it had been castrated

Balls chopped blade so I hear.  Still needed new pants.

Bimmer all back together. Shall put some miles on it before heading off to Spain though first impressions good. Treated myself to an asbo exhaust with money saved from packing up the the fags. It’s bastard noisy but I like it.
Baffle may be reinstated after first long run/brush with the law. Need to make the most of riding it around town till it’s outlawed next month. Sad times.

Just done a valve shim check on the spare head.  Intake are as good as they will be but the exhaust are a little on the small side for gap, which is about 0.02mm at a guess.  It's a bit tight on the 0.20 feeler and should be 0.21 - 0.25 (0.008 - 0.010 in).  Would this cause an issue?  Never done all this before.  I won't have more shims to play with until I prize the knackered head off.

It will probably be ok but not ideal, what size shims do you need as I've just scrapped a thundercat head and have 16 spare ones which I'll probably never use.

@Jazoli I have no idea exactly but it seems around the 260 numbers.  I just don't want the exhaust valves cocking up.

@tobyd That is the spares.  There was 1 left after doing this.  :D  When I get the other head off then I'll have spares.

A 198 is the biggest I have unfortunately 😕
