Woops ive done it again, not another bloody landie, now with added disco for sale.

But you'll see far more LRs being used in this country by off-roaders and farmers, so that suggests they're the better vehicle 'overall' for British conditions.

That's an opinion but is it down to

Cost of vehicle?

Follow the heard?

Old ways as in do as grandad did sort of thing?

Cost of modified parts?

Cost of parts in general?

Cost of vehicle - similar. Defenders can fetch high prices but Discos are cheap.

Follow the herd - why not? There are plenty of LR specialists, and people actually like them.

Old ways - coil-sprung LR versus leaf-sprung Shogun / Pajero?

Cost of modified parts - similar, frankly ludicrous, but you don't have to fit all the toys

Cost of parts - aftermarket prices are similar, e.g. front discs & pads kit for a Disco I or Shogun is £35. Can't imagine OE spares will be cheaper for a Jap vehicle though.

old ways I am not sure what shogun you are on about but even back in 84 they had coils back and torsion front,  the old ways I actually ment was farmers as the landie was the first proper 4x4 so in farmers talk    its aye been which is why they stick to them.

 

cost of parts well LR lift kit Under 2 hunna landcruiser over 600,  LR winch bumper 1 and a half landcruiser 6 plus, snorkel 100 LR 3 for jap and as for delivery time LR on the shelf jap 4 plus weeks and I waited nearly 10 for some parts.

 

cost of parts is also why people go landie ie back axle 50 to 150 landcruiser 400 to 500 LR engine 2 hunna Toyota 1000 plus.

 

 

I would love to keep this landie as its pretty nice old thing but I really cant be arsed to weld up another old chassis   if anyone wants to do it for cash I would keep it.

I thought that if you receive a payment through papal that the buyer can claim it back through the chargeback system.

 

 

Not with vehicles, Paypal don't refund for them but they can 9and almost certainly will) freeze the money for a long time. In fact, they probably will anyway as I discovered in the (not very) infamous Cavette Vs Icelandic twat Vs Paypal. The latter assumed because the car was sold to someone overseas, that I was money laundering.

Yeah, LR is a bit of a default choice really. I honestly don't know whether they're 'better' than Jap stuff... they've all got their plus & minus points as I said earlier. But I'm not a LR purist, the reason I've got mine is because there's a lot of knowledge in my circle of mates as to how to mend them when they go wrong :-)

 

Sounds like some hefty prices for Jap spares though...! Hopefully they're not needed too often.

Sounds like a ball ache. I'd want the money in paypal then in my hand and a concrete set of plans for pickup including contact numbers at his shipping company else I'd tell him to jog on.

 

The complexity and things to go wrong compared to say, someone turning up with money and driving it away massively outway any negative feedback or grief.

Do we ever learn when buying vehicles?

 

It appears I have bought another toy over the phone without first viewing so thought I better collect it asap,

I got the misses to take me to collect it and it was late so once she dropped me of I sent her home, that was the first mistake :shock:

The seller  and I swapped paper and we chatted for a while then the damn thing wouldn't start :-(  maybe I should have tested it out before parting with the coin or sending the misses home oopsie.  

 

After a wait for a mate to come we tried to jump start it, after fafing around for half an hour we decided to tow it backward out his drive and bump start it to spare the neighbours any more noise us simpletons where making.

 

Anyway to the pics if anyone's interested that is.

So to sum up the landy is draughty, cold, noisy, half the gauges don't work that's when you can see them, and it wanders about like an old drunken tramp.

 

Just need to remove or hide some checker plate now and find a roof as I am not a fan of the 90 pickups.

Damn drat and bollocks the misses never fills the damn truck so will have to pit and I'm on a tight timescale as well as the seller wants to go home,

Due to rushing like a tit I didn't take any pics but on the bright side I managed to get to the guys shop before he skedaddled away hame.

After some folded paper changed hands it was time to load up, here is the best i can do as its bloody dark.

I strapped her down in the dark wet drizzle threw the five spares wheels in the back of the hippo and i was ready to head back to a warm house in record time,

The sat nav decided to sent me back home the scenic route and all was going well until this sign confused the hell out of it.

We trundled along little winding roads which the trailer filled, thank fook i never met anyone coming the other way. if you look to the right of this picture you can see the Georgian house that the great colonel boggie stayed on his whistle stop tour of the borders, on the left is a huge lake stuffed full of fishies and other delicious edibles.

I dont know if any of you remember this from an old spot but when i spotted this and another i popped a note through the workshop door, this was well over a year ago now and the call came out of the blue asking if i wanted to buy it, he didn't need to ask me twice that's for sure.

Hey, that looks really smart.. is it as good underneath?  I think the 200tdi without the 't' is a common series conversion- I'd rather squeeze the blower in there though :D

I think the rear door conversion is quite desirable now?  We have an ex-mil 2A with it.

it looks like all four shocks are also new but I'm not sure I like the quick release method of holding them on with split pins. is that a normal feature ?

The bottom of the back panel is a bit frilly and has been painted over, better than the usual tread plate I suppose, the only paint issues are this door but I'm sure I could touch that in.

Now ive been over it I'm not sure what to actually do with it, I have two tow vehicles, two of road 4bee4s so this is just one of those impulse buys that will be parked up in the corner.

Now I'm sort of wondering what to do with the series now as I've never even driven it on a road yet which quite frankly is a bloody disgrace.

The v5 states PLG and tax is £225 or so so how do I get it changed to historic ?

Go into a post office that does tax and ask to tax it as Historic (also MOT exempt now). They will change the tax class, issue the tax and keep/send off the logbook which will come back to you as historic and all FOC

Well I've owned this landie for a little over 3 years now and just last month I finally did 30 miles in it so that's averaging 10 miles a year then,

 

I really should just pass it on to someone who would actually improve it and use it so come on chaps what's it worth.

 

It has the 200 tdi minus the turbo under the hood and I have fitted new brake  and clutch master cylinders and changed the solid bar throttle set up to cable, 

the landie used to be a petrol so needs a set of parabolic springs fitted or removal of a couple of leaves out of the springs, she tends to stot a bit,

the landie doesn't have an overdrive and it sounds like its revving a bit high whilst driving along, not sure on what speed I was actually doing as it was dark both times I drove it and the dash lights don't work either.

 

so anyone want a road legal series landie before I plop it up for sale.

Having just disposed of a Land Rover that hated me and ate all my money I shouldn't really ask, but how much?

 

I found this one hasn't ate much money in the last three years as only done 30 miles haha

as for price i really have no idea to be honest,  I cant even remember what I paid for it either,  2k ?  or is that a bit rich ?

You'll have your arm chewed off at £2k. Get a Mot and stick it up for £4k and that is probably cheap if it has a good chassis and bulkhead. Prices for Series Land Rovers are a bit mad these days.

 

 

Its tax and mot exempt and is actually on the road I just don't use it.  in my eyes its not a 4k landie,  I shall take some fresh pictures the moorn and add them here.

I appreciate that Car and Classic can have some steep prices, but you will not find a Series 3 for under £3.5K:

 

Land Rover Series 3 For Sale - Car and Classic

 

A MoT resassures buyers it is road worthy. What's the price of one over in GB these days? About £50-ish? I would imagine that would be recouped in spades, but it depends if you want the hassle. Yours looks quite tidy from the photos.

      It's a bit of an internal debate in my head as to whether to start a car specific thread on AS. My Mazda thread has become a reflection of costs of running a 25 year old car as a daily but doesn't get much traffic, my Mondeo thread has become a general MK1/2 Mondeo thread (happy about that) and my Invacar thread has become mainly about DVLA admin...but let's give it a go, see what happens.
      As documented in the news and elsewhere, here it is. Joey spud noticed straight away that it needs to be called Yummy with that number plate. But I expect the original owner was the proverbial little old lady rather than a yummy Princess-Di (had to been done) mummy.  In those days little old ladies had been Land Army girls in the war and could deal with the lack of PAS!

      It was just 7 miles up the road from me on the edge of isle of Thanet (which is where the Mazda came from too) and the current owners kindly brought it over from their marshland home in the sticks.
      Paperwork was minimal @BeEP has kindly posted me an excellent set of owner manuals, which is great, and makes a car seem more loved straight away,

      In consultation with @RobT who is a man of taste in such matters an appropriate keyring was sourced from eBay, priorities eh?

      In it's first week with me, I've had the tracking done at a cost of £40 that has sorted out the lopsided steering wheel and generally improved the driving experience.
      Soon, I'll do a list of prioritised jobs. It has an MOT until October. 
      In true AS fashion it has no role on the fleet, or no actual need. But after I failed to secure a second 323 coupé, I just had to have it! I hope it can make an appearance at a future Kent shiters meet, and maybe a very buzzy and bouncy journey to shitefest in May? We'll see.

      Yesterday I was in hospital having surgery on my ankle so rather than rest like the surgeon said I have arranged to go and collect my new car.
      I have been awake all night in pain so what could possibly go wrong! Luckily it's only a couple of hours round trip so I reckon I can do it, if I get really tired on the way back the accommodation in my new car is positively palatial and I can rest up on the heated rear seats.
      Can't wait!

      A strange day yesterday where both me and Mrs Cheeze both bought cars. She is getting a 65 plate Civic which she says she will keep for 10 years - hopefully.
       
      I got a Jaguar XJ6 4.0 Sovereign for significantly less than the cost of her Civic. I'd been keeping an eye on it on Gumtree the last month and the price had been creeping down and I managed to get it a bit cheaper still. With a bit of googling it appears it went through the Morris Leslie classic auction in August. I paid a bit less than it went through there at.
       
      Surprisingly Mrs Cheeze likes it and my Dad loves it. There is some rust on the roof and a giffer repair on one of the arches but it seems solid. Scabby bits here and there but nothing terminal. It has done 59,000 miles and only seems to have done a couple of thousand in the last few years.
       
      It drives nicely but doesn't change up as soon as it should I feel. It isn't going into third until 30mph and fourth isn't until about 75mph. You can induce it to change up by booting it and backing off but thats not ideal. I need to check the fluid level. If it is still doing it after that I'll get a gearbox service done on it.
       
      It is surprisingly small inside. I went to pick up my big mate last night in it and even with the passenger seat right back he was struggling. He managed once I had reclined it a bit.

      So at least a bunch of you will recognise my much hacked about Invacar (AC Model 70 actually to be technically correct), KPL139P from my blog thread.
       
      With the arrival of Dollywobbler's former spares car the decision was made to return that to the road rather than KPL as it was in far better overall condition.
       
      So since then she has donated her engine, brakes and gearbox to TPA.
       
      It seems a shame to just throw away the leftovers though. Given the repeated comments we've both had from people saying we should stick a silly bike engine or something in it, there seems to be interest in some madcap projects.
       
      I reckon with a roof chop, custom front end built and a suitably mad engine you could make a truly epic 2/3rd scale replica hot rod with it. I however have neither the time nor resources.
       
      The chassis will need a couple of repairs due to water having got trapped beneath the floor, but is overall sound. Sound and utterly over-engineered for what it is.
       
      She already has a V5C present and in my name, so just needs a (Class III) MOT to allow you to change the vehicle type to motor tricycle and tax class to historic.
       
      I need the garage space back, so if anyone wants to take this on as a crazy project, it's all yours.
       
      It has tyres that are holding air sufficiently that it can roll for loading purposes just fine.
       

       

       
      A pair of somewhat dodgy doors can be had if required, I just need to swap some bits over before I'm done with them. Rear windscreen is missing, windscreen is present and serviceable, and I have good door glass available if you want it.
       
      If you're thinking ditching the body, sticking a roll cage on and making a crazy off-road buggy that might be immaterial...plenty of suspension travel and compliant springs...that could work actually...

      Really not looking for anything for it, but if you'd like to contribute towards the camper and Invacar restoration fund anything will be appreciated.
       
      I'd rather have it out the way sooner than later to be honest, but if you're interested but cannot get it picked up until a given date I'm sure we can arrange something.
