Spottedlaurel
Small Talk man was Terry Ross. I think he's still active in the kit-building world. I thought SM was excellent in the '80's, Small Talk added to it really well.

I think I just solved the riddle of where the "missing" £5.5k you spent last year went though Who makes the Mk3 Cortina by the way - is that a Vanguards release? You might well joke! But in the famous words of B.T.O - You ain't seen nothin yet! Yes it's the Vanguards GXL naturally being peddled by the money grabbers on eBay as the 'Life On Mars' car! It's actually more a solid yellowy colour rather than the bronze of the TV car. But close enough for most of fickle bunch out there i.e. not the serious collectorsHere's a couple;http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-CORTINA-MK-III-GXL-MAIZE-YELLOW-1-43-VANGUARDS-NEW_W0QQitemZ130234387193QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130234387193&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14this one's been 'improved'!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Corgi-VANGUARDS-FORD-CORTINA-MkIII-GXL-DIORAMA-YELLOW_W0QQitemZ360064697180QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item360064697180&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Which makes me wonder if a good proportion of the value of the French Dinky's comes from them having a good to excellent condition box, as long as it comes with the model in question, obviously. I bought mine from an online shop a few years ago back in the days when I had discovered buying things online as opposed to having to wait till the next Swapmeet but before the days when I decided to see what all this eBay fuss was about (and then never looked back!). Think the model cost me about £7, it wasn't much anyway.I couldn't find any R14s, but here are all the Pilen models currently on eBay....http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__Pilen_W0QQ_nkwZPilenQQ_npmvZ3QQ_verZ4?_sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&fsradio2=%26LH_PrefLoc%3D1&LH_SubLocation=1&_fspt=0&_sadis=200&_fpos=&_fcsfc=0another you'll see there that I've also got is the Opel Ascona & also that Mercedes MB100 van.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PILEN-OPEL-ASCONA-SCALA-1-43_W0QQitemZ370064325230QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370064325230&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LA-FRAGONETA-MERCEDES-MB100-TELEFONICA-1-50-PILEN_W0QQitemZ380041578385QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380041578385&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14I paid about £35 for my Ascona & something like £10 -15 for the Merc van, so you win some, you lose some! Generally though I've got a good track record of getting things for a good price or making money on things. For instance those Matchbox Dinky Triumph Stags, I bought a white one from a model shop for about £12. Then sometime later from my local model shop I found another white one plus the ultra desirable green one, £7 for the white one & £10 for the green one. At the time (prices might have fallen now Vanguards have finally released a Stag!) the white one was fetching about 3 times what I paid, & the green one roughly 7 times what I paid. As I had 2 of the white Stag I sold one on eBay for £30. That's good business!Even better was when I found a desirable Minichamps Mercedes model at a local market for a tenner. I knew it was rare & could probably get maybe £50 for it. I didn't really do anything for me so I was happy to sell it on. Went to a nutter in Japan for £105! That's my best yet, over ten times what I paid! There's also the Minichamps MkIII Capris, I don't want to sell them but I've got all of them & the silver & black ones are considerably desirable!I can't find my links to the ones previously sold as the links have expired, but here's one & I'd expect it to fetch £100+. The previous ones have made £130 - 150.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Minichamps-Capri-MkIII-3-0S-Silver-Very-Rare-Mint_W0QQitemZ320268229724QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320268229724&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14This gold one should make at least £30-40 but who knows with eBay!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MINICHAMPS-FORD-CAPRI-3-0S-GOLD_W0QQitemZ170234322214QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item170234322214&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14I have got every Minichamps MkIII Capri released so far. I've got 3 or 4 of the MkIIs but not so bothered to get every example. This is a nice one & is the most recent Capri that I've added to my collection....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Minichamps-Capri-MkIII-2-8i-Rare-Mint_W0QQitemZ320268223920QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320268223920&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14I couldn't find any Dinky R14s either, but there is this R12....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/French-Dinky-No-1414-Renault-12-in-mustard-yellow-MB_W0QQitemZ380036169693QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380036169693&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14I suppose the Dinky name does have more glamour & prestige to it!I've got one of these too in mint condition but unfortunately without the box, which is kinda crucial!...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FRENCH-DINKY-TOYS-1409-CHRYSLER-180-METALIC-GREEN_W0QQitemZ200215232283QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FRENCH-DINKY-TOYS-No-1409-CHRYSLER-180-VN-MIB_W0QQitemZ300236911976QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DINKY-TOYS-N-1409-CHRYSLER-180-ETAT-NEUF-en-BOITE_W0QQitemZ170232113192QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item170232113192&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14The French Dinky 'Cougars' are the cheaper end of the range but that's because they're more basic, & have a plastic base & no opening parts. They come on a basic bubble attached to a card type package. They are also shared castings with old Solidos, which gives you an idea, as opposed to the heavier, more quality castings shared with Pilen. I've still added most of them to my collection though, Pug 504, BMW 520 E12, R14, Ritmo, Visa, Pug 104 3 door etc etc etchttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/dinky-toys-french-fiat-ritmo-this-has-been-resprayed_W0QQitemZ320267739554QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320267739554&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Split_Pin
Thats the first minichamps Capri I've seen that isnt a model of a German-market Model. My 1/18 MK1 is a v4 and my orange MK2 is a 2.3, an engine never used in UK capris. I know what you mean about e-bay too -it addictive for buying shite in minature! I also have a few of those faux-Dinky/Solido models, mint ones are pennies. I want the Tagora one. The best bargain I got was these for £10 each: I had been going to swapmeets for many years but recently they are just full of robbing chanty-rastlers, however the above 2 were an unusually spiffing bargain
MrRegieRitmo
I had the Lancia (minus the box) but I ebayed it as trying to slim down the larger models in favour of just sticking to 1/43rd for space reasons. Think it went for £8 or maybe more, can't remember now!
r.welfare
Wow IainL, that Beetle brings back some memories for me. I got one of those (saloon version) to shut me up when my brother was born in 1980!Reg, I sold my model collection when I went to University, having spent a good few years buying up stuff instead of pestering gurls (I made up for the latter in the interim!). Stopped me from having a student loan, so a good investment! My best purchase was a pair of those 1/20th scale plastic Stahlberg Saab 900s from a boot sale last summer, for a fiver. Sold on eBay to foreign collectors for about £65 total, I recall...
mk2_craig
 I have this Beetle, bought circa 1990 when the local shop was knocking them out at £4.99 I think. I also have the Bburago R14 bought for me when aged about 4 when the family car was an orange 14, the bikes got taken off the roofrack + hidden away somewhere and in theory should still be around somewhere!! The rest of the car took an absolute hammering and long after the 1/1 14 had gone I decided to use the Renault Boutique spray can still in the garage to repaint the model, but it didn't come out very well as I guess the paint had gone off after sitting for years and in any case we somehow managed to misplace the doors. Simon M
My Burago R14 didn't have the bikes on it - have I missed out? I think it had rallying stickers on it from memory, though sadly the model vanished some years ago.
MrRegieRitmo
There were different versions available, notably a yellow example with Renault sponsorship / rally decals on it. My preference is for the one with the bikes on it (Tour De France of course), although as an adult collector I'm equally appreciative of a bog standard version with no stickers or extra bits on it / accessories as it's more realistic. I have a metallic blue one that meets that requirement although a previous owner has 'detailed it' so I'm not sure how different it is from how it's supposed to be! Ahh here's a lovely plain one (although it's conceivable it could have had the stickers removed!)http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BURAGO-1-24-RENAULT-14_W0QQitemZ110266053961QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110266053961&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14also came up in the search is this 1/43 R9http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUPERB-BURAGO-RENAULT-9-RALLY-CAR-MIB_W0QQitemZ150260343014QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116I should have been more careful with the ones of these I had as a kid! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENAULT-5-TURBO-BURAGO-1-43-MODEL4180-MONTE-CARLO_W0QQitemZ200236019034QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200236019034&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENAULT-5-TURBO-BURAGO-1-43-MODEL4180-ELF-18-NO-BOX_W0QQitemZ200236265871QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200236265871&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

It's based on a real vehicle, a promotional stunt by Citroen back in the 50s (?) they put one in the ocean sitting on large inflatable heavy duty balloons. Remember reading it somewhere.Seems this model can be had very cheap now!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/citroen-id-19-sur-ballons-1959-by-atlas-1-43_W0QQitemZ150264787072QQihZ005QQcategoryZ68399QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
