garycox
Has anyone in the SE area (as close to Brighton as possible) got a fairly cheap car for sale? I've been asked to find my friend something. The criteria is: - 1500cc or under- decent chunk of MOT- ideally under £800 Thanks!

wuvvum
My Scenic fits all the criteria apart from the "close to Brighton" bit... Plus it's a Renault so it might break.
garycox
Cheers chaps! Subaru - possible... how much will it be? Escort - bit big/dull. Scenic - bit big/dull/terrifying. Turns out I've trained him better than I thought, and ideally we're looking for something 70s/early 80s now... This is top of the WANT list so far: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1979-PEUGEOT- ... 0873664249 and an offer has been submitted. Also on the watch list are these: Viva HChttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151001441075 Datsun 100Ahttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200900391531 So if you have something similar (eg Allegro/Marina/Chevette/Mk3 Escort/Mk1 Astra etc) for under a grand, let me know. RobT
How's about this Gary? Eligible for classic insurance now, and would also prevent me from buying it as I'm tempted. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C364690

garycox
Not yet, the 104 sold, and Viva was ended early. LNA is on the watch list, along with a Fiat 126BIS and some other stuff. He wants a Mini, and would pay a bit more for one but there are none worth having within budget any more. I phoned up about a Mini 30 yesterday that sounded alright, but it had already sold. coalnotdole
A neighbour put their head round the door of the garage last week saying a friend of theirs had a mk5 cortina they wanted to sell. From the sound of it its a 1982 car so end of production run. Apparently its tidyish and either just passed an mot or just about to have it run out. I haven't chased it up yet but can probably find out a bit more if your interested. Its in littlehampton. Joe

garycox
Collected this on Saturday... It's pretty good, I've not been over the underside very closely but it seems virtually rust-free, and generally in pretty good condition. The only real fault is that it hates starting from cold so needs a carb overhaul at least. That was mentioned in the advert though so can't complain. Also it does a little backfire when you switch it off, which is a bit annoying. I'm hoping carb fettling will sort that out too(?). Other than that, it has a bit of wobbly perspex for a quarterlight on the driver's door and the offside indicator lens is a nearside one updide down, so looks weird. The headlight on that side looks a bit strange too, it's mounted further forward than the other one for some reason. Also it has no headlining - presumably it should have? The guy we bought it from was fairly tall so he might have taken it out I suppose. Driving it (once it gets going) is pretty entertaining, predictably it's quite a lot like a Mini, except even more cramped and noisy. It's quite slow and has no suspension but the handling's good and the steering's very direct. On the motorway with your foot welded to the floor it'll do between 60 and 75 depending on the gradient. At these speeds it's deafening though, luckily it's got a pretty decent stereo fitted. The driving position is a little odd with half of the footwell taken up by the wheelarch and all of the pedals over in the middle of the car. It doesn't take much getting used to but I think it'd be impossible to drive if you have big feet. Also there's nowhere between the narrow seat and the door for your right arm to go. I like it. It'd get tiring very quickly if you were doing long journeys, but that's not really the point is it. Didn't take many pictures, but here they are anyway So - if anyone has any of the following, let me know please! Carb or rebuild kitWorkshop manualQuarterlight glass for offside doorOffside front indicator lensLittle bit of grey plastic rubbing strip that goes on the nearside front wingAny other service bits etc.
purplebargeken
What a cracking little car. I hear you about the wheel well encroaching. There is a similar issue with my soon to be gone Daf 33, to overcome this problem, most people use their left foot to press the brake, not entirely helpful if you have a clutch pedal I suppose. Please tell me that the car in the parking space shot has been photoshopped. If not, then that is one seriously, seriously small car, almost pocket sized. Fab. Huge want! More piccies and updates please. Ken
messerschmitt owner
The carb rebuild kit can be bought from Holland for much less than the equivalent Ricambi item in the UK - mine is awaiting a new carb too, which is a weak point on the bis. I had the carb rebuilt but it still doesn't want to go properly so am looking for a new carb as well. Well bought at £740 though!
messerschmitt owner
driver's seat looks not too bad either - don't know what material they used for the seats but the driver's is often always knackered too.
dollywobbler
Nice one Mr Cox. Love it. My only driving experience of one of these is around a pub car park (it was bright pink with pink fluffy interior). Would be very interested to try one on actual roads, though preferably with less pink.

barrett
Sweet little thing. I think the 'FSM' means it was made in Poland, like FSO. Correcto! It's got the same light stalks as an FSO Polonez, which adds a bit of 'awful car kudos'. It's fucking horrible sitting in the back when it's on the move though, unless you enjoy a gearbox-related arse massage (and I'm sure many do). I like it though, mainly because it's simple enough even for a mechanical dunce like me to get it going. Not sure I would want one, but a nice early aircooled version on little wheels would be a fun thing I reckon.
M'coli
Superb! This is the same colour as my air-cooled one. The backfire may be the wasted spark coil, maybe not. If this has points and condenser, I'd recommend ALWAYS carrying a spare condenser or two, especially if you keep exploring the performance - the vibration of the 2-cylinder engine had the habit of causing the wire outside of the dizzy from the condensor to break off fairly frequently. Have fun!
