I was learning to drive in a field when I was 7,and I was doing ok until I went round a track, and missed the corner, smacking straight into a concrete post ! The car lived on as a field car for another year, but where I smacked it on the wing, turned the headlamp inwards and towards the ground !

Brand new Maestro in 1986, while working at Mann Egerton in Kings Lynn. Came off a bend and hit a solicitors office, got fired. This meant I had no money the following weekend so ended up wandering around a fairground instead, where I met my Mrs. So it all turned out for the best, and I'm not sorry you died, zircon blue Maestro automatic.

My first car, a Nova. Being young with a group of mates in the car it was a classic "watch this" moment as I decided I'd handbrake turn around a sharp corner to show of my Ridge Racer style powerslides, and instead just understeered straight into the embankment. Aside from my ego, the only damage was a cracked numberplate, so I just said to my parents someone must have kicked it. To this day they still don't know (and I would still get in trouble if I told them). Then a few weeks later I drove straight into the back of a 4x4, which was somewhat harder to hide. Lesson learnt though and I've never had a fault accident since

Austin 1300, 6.30am New Years day 1989.

The gatepost jumped out at me*. I thought I had a pic on my Flickr account, but I dont - I'll upload one later.

It got a second hand wing and carried on until it met the arse end of a dustcart (that reversed into the car).

*Contary to belief I wasnt pissed, I had just come off a night shift and was dead on my arse, the driveway was a narrow bastard at the best of times. January 2nd saw the gatepost being attacked with a sledge hammer and removed for all time.

Mums teal blue 1973 Morris marina 1.3 auto.

3weeks after passing my test in 1984

Turned right out of a blind junction and was broadsided by a minty fresh and brand new montego top spec model being delivered to the first owner by main stealer mechanic. He was motoring some and as such the damage was spectacular. The monty needed lifting off the road, the marina accelerated faster sideways than it ever had in a straight line :D but we were both ok. Bit of concussion for me and luckily the other chap was wearing a seatbelt.

Dads insurance company probably still has a mark against my name

I crashed a Simca 1100 van into a sodding great hole in a Quarry circa 1984.

On the road I clipped a Mark 1 Golf with my Mini Van. In the piossing rain, some dozy bint had parked on a blind bend with no lights on for some obscure reason. I came around the corner, swerved to avoid it, nearly hit an oncoming XJ6 and bashed the back quarter. They then put in for a claim but it seemed high - turns out they'd tried to get some other damage sorted on the same claim. It was rejected after myself and Fathyer Bluejeans went round for a spot of friendly intimidation. Never heard any more.

Driving Mothers 1963? triumph Herald, I was new to driving 16 years old. I was driving beside the railway and an excurtion steam train came past, that took all my attention, even when the traffic in front stopped ! I swung to the right and was collected by a Mini Traveller coming towards me and that pushed the Herald into a tree. Damage was extensive to both cars, but the Herald was a mess on both sides :( But of course in those times it was repaired and lived with us until 1970 when a new Herald Came to stay. I remember my parents did not get very annoyed and put it down to youf ( father was the insurance agent :D )

Next was in Sydney when my pristine 1957 Holden was bowled by a drunk insurance man who did not stop at an intersection. I was uninsured but was handsomely paid out courtesy of said agent on the promise that I would not mention the word alcohol ( I'll lose my job)

No persons or animals were injured in the above accidents.

....And the car was?

Mine was the same Impala Biege, 1984 Citroen BX16 RS that features in the "First car you had sex in" thread....Was on my way to collect my girlfriend (Same girl too!), it was getting dark, I considered lights to be necessary....I pulled out to pass a Vauxhall Cavalier that was parked on a blind bend, and met an un-lit Ford Capri coming the other way, resulting in a written-off Capri, and a BX with a severe hair-lip! Technically my fault, but I believe that if the muppet hadn't parked on the bend, or if the pikey in the Capri had thought to flick his lights on, things would have been different....If I could do it again, I'd hit the Cavalier!

Luckily, I was a trainee Panel Beater back then....My BX was quickly back on the road, better than ever! :D

Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec Auto, SJ54 NZF, c.2005. Hit gravel during an enthusiastic cornering excercise and ran up an embankment. Ripped the front bumper to bits and repaired it with ally strapping and half a dozen rivets. Took the insurance nearly three months to collect it (and a further sixteen weeks to actually repair it) so in the interim I reversed it into a gatepost after a 36 hour "nightshift".

Y-reg Opel Manta GT/J, on the Thickthorn roundabout just south of Norwich, before they installed traffic lights so you could still go hooning across. I was 19, it was dark and pissing with rain, and I wasn't concentrating fully as I was trying to turn the fan up to get the screen to demist. Looked up to find that I was somewhat sideways coming off the roundabout, over-corrected, span and punted into the armco. Car was still driveable but was really a write-off unfortunately. Apart from parking knocks, that's the only car I've ever crashed.

Roundabout at the top of Grapes Hill in Norwich. Mk1 Fiesta in front of me, it went to move so I went to move, it stopped for no reason, I didn't. Well I did, but it was due to a Fiesta being in the way. The car was my mum's Mk1 Megane and I'd been driving for all of three months.

Damage to the Megane was nil. Not even a cracked numberplate, it was only walking pace.

The Fiesta was allegedly a writeoff, the boot wouldn't shut. The baldy headed angry man was quite rude indeed about how I could have hurt his kids, who were scattered across the inside of the car including one on the parcel shelf.

Went through insurance, turns out he wasn't insured and was also in possession of a very crudely faked insurance certificate. Oooops.

The only other accident I've ever had was in my £200 Audi 90 Quattro, came out of work and was desperate to go and play in the snow so didn't check behind me as I reversed out of a space. Straight into a 3 month old Passat. Luckily the snow was thick so I think it helped that I pushed the car more than denting it and I got away with shelling out for a £150 filler and spray job at my local bodyshop, the lady who owned it was really nice about it.

My only accident was at Norwich park & ride, I clipped a Clio's rear wing with my mk2 Scirocco about 6yrs ago.

Damage to Scirocco - indicator lens.

Damage to Clio - small dent/scrape on osr quarter.

I left a note, but the owner of the Clio called her insurance company before me, cost my insurer £1k.

Cause of accident - too many 16hr days and me being half awake

Mine was in my D715SGT, my Cavalier SRi130. Pulled out of my parents turning in Basildon (Fyfields), following an Escort, the road was wet and it was drizzling. As you do I checked the mirror, looked ahead, checked mirror again, looked back ahead to see said Escrote stopped, no time to think and stood on brakes, of course no ABS so car locked up and slid into back of Scrote, result was very bent front of Cav and written off Scrote.

My fault you would think? Well no as it turns out, when matey in Scrote got out his 1st words were "sorry mate, I knew none of my back lights were working, I was on the way to get them fixed", ker and, indeed, ching.

Mine was in F983 OHD, my first Volvo 340.

I was driving t't cinema with a carful of mates, having not long ago passed, and didn't see a car stopped in front of me at a pelican crossing. Went hard on the brakes and it slid over into the next lane and into the path of a Mk4 Golf estate. Slid down the side of my car, but the Golf came out of it much worse.

Everyone was unhurt, as a matter of fact it was tickety-boo because the driver of the Golf was proper fit and I got her number. Shame I was 18 and she was about 29. :(

F273DWA. I'd not had the car long, and being my first RWD car after a string of FWD stuff, I obviously couldn't handle the POWAH of the 1800CVH under the bonnet. I was rather excited as it was my first night off in a while, and a very cold night it was too.

I'd dropped my mate off at one pub and was en-route to collect another mate when I thought I'd give it a bootful up a wide, fast Aroad. There was something parked on my side of the road, so I went around but when it came to coming back into my lane the backend started sliding. I just knew there was no way to catch it, I was going far too fast, so all I could do was wait for the inevitable shunt.

I have vague recollections of tensing up just before impact, but I must've closed my eyes as the next thing I'm aware of is being sat in the drivers seat with the car pointing vaguely in the direction i was travelling. I tried my door, but it was jammed, so I clambered out of the passenger side. The remainder is a bit of a blur. I remember getting out and leaning against the car and sparking up only for a very nice lady, who had come out of her house after hearing the bang (remember this was midnight-ish), to start yelling at me about the fact there was fuel and oil (and bits of car) all around me.

Then, as it started to snow around us, she gave me a hug and told me I'd been incredibly lucky. I was only then I actually looked at the car.

I remember it being dragged onto the recovery truck and none of the wheels were pointing in the same direction. Oh and the fact that my speakers had come off the parcel shelf, through the rear window and into a bus stop 100yards up the road. And we never did find the front bumper. Seriously.

I wish i could say it's slowed me down, but I can't. It has, however, bestowed upon me a respect for road and weather conditions and I always drive appropriately.

I did something similar to two Sierras in the one and only (touch wood!) "big one" I've ever had.

Driving along an unfamiliar road at night in a Sierra I'd had for a week, I came across a junction with no markings, no street lights and no idea that there was even another road there, until I was right on it and I ploughed side on into another Sierra. Luckily there were no serious injuries in either car, everybody escaped with a few bruises and sprains.

The other car was a taxi, and had just driven straight through as well, so it was a 50/50.

I hit him on his front wheel, if I'd hit the doors it might not have ended so well. Mine ended up with the front end stoved in far worse than the blue one above, the windscreen frame had badly distorted and the screen broke, the engine broke off its mounts and locked the back wheels solid, making it very difficult for them to load onto the truck that came for it.

Earlier this year, 1980 Austin Princess, in beige. You all know the story, obviously, but here's a picture anyway. Currently sat in the garage, waiting for a push-me-pull-me tool to make it all better again.

Hit a Ford Connect van at low speed in stop-start traffic, during the school run, in the rain, on my way to an MoT. D'oh!

The first crash I had that was entirely my fault was in my Fiat Tempra (3rd car after 6 years of driving). I was a few weeks into a job that was quite stressful and with it on my mind (and punk rock on the CD player), not 100% focused on the road condition I ended up ploughing into the back of an F reg VW Polo 'breadvan' .

Rather worrying is that the car was driven by a woman who had a young child in the back of the car :( who started crying and I felt awful. As a testament to the quality of post-1980 VWs, hardly any damage was done to the rear of it whereas the front of mine was a mess. At the precise location of the crash, some workmen were about to put in a mini roundabout there. A middle aged workman emerged with a broom and swept up the Fiat's grille, which came off in one bit and some of the other Italian metallic debris. I didn't bother asking for the grille back - I knew the Tempra would be written off.

The insurance claim was settled amicably. The lady I crashed into contacted me for some information to finalise the claim. She told me that she was getting £800 for her Polo, which I thought was a very good settlement. Can't remember how much I got for mine but it was nowhere near £800.

Hmm. For a big car, Sierras don't crash particularly well, do they? :?

I don't know. I'd estimate my closing speed of around 60/70mph, I was tonking on some, make no mistake.

That 'V' in the nose was a set of railings that I hit end on, then the roof was decimated when the car had spun and tried to roll but was stopped by a streetlamp. I took a pretty decent battering I thought. Put it this way, if I'd been in my Nova, I wouldn't be here... ofcourse, that car would neither have been going that quick, nor, would it have oversteered.
