Glorious Shite of Soligorsk, Former Soviet Republic Belarus

Recommended Posts

I have just had cause to visit this magnificent country and wherever possible I have secretly gone out of my way to photograph the abundance of shite in every nook and cranny. If you ever wondered where all the mark 2 Passats and facelift Audi 80's went, look no further. Even after a week in the grey cantons that are this wonderful place I still found myself squealing with delight every time I saw a Lada (Shiguli), Moskvich, ZAZ or Volga and fcuk knows there were millions of them, relax and enjoy your trip:

Welcome to Soligorsk!

Posted Image

Gorgeous pre 1980 Lada / Shiguli showing Soviet era Minsk plates right outside my favourite restaurant!

Posted Image

Posted Image

One of many many Opel Rekords

Posted Image

The first of thousands of Mk 2 Passats I saw, all of which were resprayed possibbly as they had been in terrible German crashes before they were imported!

Posted Image

Spotted on a window of a small farm outside of Soligorsk, christ knows how a Dunedin of Edinburgh sticker got there!

Posted Image

Posted Image

I'd never seen a 2 door VW Jetta before, then I saw loads:

Amazing! Is there much in the way of modern Western vehicles over there?I do love those UAZs, that crewcab one looks superb.

Oh there's plenty of Western shite, mostly brought in as write offs from Germany then tarted up and sold on for stupid amounts, ie 1994 Mazda 323, $4000, and believe me they sell, how about a 1997 525 Beemer with under bonnet fire damage for $9500, crazy! The funny thing is the cars that seem to survive the best are Ladas, Moskies and Volgas, western shite can't take the abuse, what does seem to survive better than most is opel Asconas, Rekords, VW Passats and Audi 80 / 100, W123 Mercs and Ford Sierras. On the way to Minsk yesterday I was doing 140km on a shit road when I was overtaken at speed by two blokes in a fukced up 1970's Lada, you just can't knock their ability to just go on working!

Next time ,book a 1 way ticket and take an A frame. You know my taste & you know it makes sense. Really.

Get this Nigel, I was offered a garage stored 1958 Pobeda M20 for nowt, ZAZ's for £50 working, basically a look through their equivalent of loot would bring you early '70's Soviet shit for f-all, the only problem is getting them out! However, if you fancy a bit of that, let me know!

Fantastic stuff! Amazing to see Zaphos still being used!!! Were they not supposed to be kind of death-traps? Love them all the same :D So glad to see the old 'BA3' alive and kicking over there.Doesnt surprise me that you say most western stuff doesnt stand up to the punishing roads there, but I'm both surprised and glad to see that 80's GM cars can take it!I would love to visit this part of the world, soley for the wonderful tat lining the streets.

Have 1,000,000 roving reporter points 8) If shite motors make such good money there, then surely the import/export market is a perfect place to be.ebay.de for 1980s VW Passats then drive out with one of those huge trucks loaded with ZAZs, UAZs and Ladas. Reckon you can do it with a $50 bribe and some Levis 501s?

I'll have a dozen ZAZs, please. With any luck, that should provide enough bits to make a good one.At those prices, I'm surprised that some enterprising metal dealer hasn't minced them all up and sold them to the Chinese. Is there a reason why they haven't, do you know?
