Are the Mk2 Mondeo the new uber banger?

Don't know, I have a feeling it might have cruise, but I haven't found/tried it yet. Concerning the Mk3's, they are a most appealing car I must say. My mate has an ST220, the engine in it popped a week after he got it and he managed to find a second hand engine with a certified 5000 miles on, so boshed that in. It sounds beautiful and he runs it on LPG, on which he gets 28mpg so its a pretty cheap way to get about. It sounds to me like the ideal transport solution.

To verify the Mondeo MKs:

MKI 1993-1996

MKII 1996-2000

MKIII 2000-2007

MKIV 2007-current

the MKV will be along next year

The future- MKV available in 2013

I've always liked the Mondeo I had a MKI LX TD from 2004-2005 (that had a blue dashboard) and that was a good car my father also had a petrol MKI LX from 2003-2010. They are a reliable car and the MKI's are very rust resistant. I don't think they have the council estate image, that would go to the BMW 3 series they have become very much the chavs mode of transport.

I still see afew MKII's earning a living on the cab ranks (normally the oldest cars still in service) also a late MKI on a P reg is still mini cabbing here, until I saw it I had thought the last of the MKI's had gone a couple of years back, I remember travelling about 3/4 years ago in a MKI Mondeo taxi around an L reg that was a petrol!

Check out this MKI Mondeo taxi that reached a million miles: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-me ... e-18443992

Cracking buy Mr B - I'm literally green with literally literal envy  !

Should be the CC controls on the wheel, and the little stalk down by your left knee will be the audio controls - my old one had the CD control panel under the stereo. Does the little strip LCD under the centre air vents work?

Mk1s are definitely more rust resistant than the Mk1.5s/2s, often seem better built all round in fact. Ford must have cheapened some of the paint process in 96 for sure.

The Mk5 will be delayed until 2014, now Ford have decided to shut down Genk and move production to Valencia.

...or so last weeks Autocar said. They are already on sale in North America as the Fusion:

Got this Mondeo on the road at the weekend. Its fookin brilliant, cruise control works, remote locking works, juddery wipers fixed, basically everything bar the drivers heated seat seems to work. Got some new Alpine speakers to go in but the daft twats at the car hi-fi shop have not sent the wiring connectors so theyre not in yet. Sails along almost silent at 70mph. Only getting 30mpg though on my 100-mile steady motorway trip which i was hoping to beat, but you can't have everything I suppose! I will just have to offset the cost of the fuel against the fact that the car cost fook all, and is great.

Sounds like a perfectly calibrated specimen, Mr B. Fatha Earl never got more than 28.5 (properly calculated) out of his ultra-late P reg MK1 Ghia X, with the Doctor Strangelovematic gearbox (OVERDRIVE!!!1). That's incidentally the exact same drinking rate as his 540 does.

Triffic car. His mate had his off him and later scrappaged it in for a Hyundai Atoz or something else execrable, the ridiculous bellend.

Yeah i can't really knock it, its a 2.5V6 with an autobox FFS, what did I expect? 30mpg is perfectly reasonable really, i was just hoping that I might coax a bit more out of a steady 100-mile round trip. Anyway i'm still a big fan and suddenly the commute seems a lot more appealing!

Drove my Mondeo 550 miles in one hit yesterday:

Never even bothered opening the bonnet before setting off, thats how much faith I have in this car. Cruise set at 75mph for most of the journey, the car was absolutely faultless and i have managed to coax a genuine 32.4mpg out of the last tankful. It is a real pleasure to drive on the motorways, its mega quiet inside and the body seems mega well isolated from the road, it properly glides along. The auto box and the cruise control sometimes have a sort of robot wars-style battle on long uphills but that's about the worst of it and I think its probably pretty normal. Anyway, its fuggin amazing all round for £400. I love it!!! Ms_Bol is a big fan as well, I think she is gonna adopt it as a replacement for her Mk4 Astra.

There was a chappie at Mallory today with a BTCC replica V6. Not sure where I stand on making a replica but at least he'd done it properly and made an actual racing car with a rollcage and decent engine, and it was on the track not parked outside Tesco in a disabled bay.

The V6 sounded amazing, that an a massively-turbo'ed Escort Cosworth were the two nicest noises of the day. It wasn't hugely quick but it was battling well with a R5GTT and a championship-winning Saxo so not too lardy.

BUMP, this mondeo has been in my custody for a year now, done about 12,000 miles in it! Its behaved perfectly but today failed the test on front wishbones, broken coil spring, u/s ARB links at the back, a tyre and some welding (urgh). Looking at the pics in this thread its not quite as smart as it was a year ago but its only been washed a couple of times so thats hardly surprising. Anyway I'm not chucking it away so will get stuck into it when i'm back off hols.

If you're doing the front wishbones Mr. B, buy some new wishbone bolts, theyre only a couple of quid, but you cant get 2 of them out as they hit the subframe. Simply slit the heads off with a grinder and then fit the new bolts the other way round - there's enough room for the nut and it saves loads of hassle :)
